Hullo dere. No theme this time -- just great unreleased music by Hector Zazou (w/ the Muffins!), Bernard Parmegiani, Annea Lockwood, Michael Sahl & Cleve Pozar, Meadow House, Chris Newman, Scott Miller, Jacques Bekaert, & Hans Wuthrich-Mathez. |

|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:19pm
Ricardo Montalban:
There's talking all over this music! Did someone forget to demagnetize their tape hiss?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:20pm
tonyc:
No, your speaker didn't just blow: for some strange reason, the first part of this Annea Lockwood piece is only in one channel. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:21pm
Hugo:
Love these hisstorical recordings!
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:21pm

Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
Hi boys and girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black and I'm the Indian of the group, and I'm looking forward to some wildly creative, innovative and obscure music! And I am the central scrutinizer (but you can call me Frank), and I pretend to enjoy that sort of thing but really I like to play never ending guitar solos, discuss ugly parts of the body and get very hung up!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:24pm
listener james from westwood:
that kitty's motor is revving!
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:25pm
tonyc:
Hey there Jimmy CB!! |
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:26pm
tonyc:
I'm guessing this text is Gertrude Stein. Anyone know for sure? |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:26pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
Do you like Ivor Cutler, Tony?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:27pm
tonyc:
Yes indeed -- very much. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:27pm
Hugo:
Don Preston is the grandmother of the group.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:32pm
Hugo:
Was there ever a vol. 1 of Life in a Scotch Sitting Room? I always wondered about that.
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:33pm
tonyc:
Not sure.... |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:33pm
Ike:
Sounding great! | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:34pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
nice vibes! | |
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:34pm
tonyc:

|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:34pm
charlie:
wow! great stuff on the show today. wish i didn't have to head out for the day...
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:35pm
Doug S.:
So great to hear this Cleve stuff. Thanks Tony!!
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:35pm
tonyc:
Charlie and Doug! Glad to see you both here.... |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:40pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I recently picked up a copy of the new Don Preston LP of old sounds from the Garrick Theatre. Pretty weird. I enjoyed it immensely.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:42pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
after watching LangLang, Elton and Paul McCartney last night at the Queen's Jubilee concert, its great to hear music thats really pushing the boundaries out!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:43pm
Opal the Hot Little Bitch:
Jimmy Carl, did you see Grace Jones do her hula hoop routine?
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:44pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
thought she was mad, sad and very bad singing!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:45pm
Hugo:
Speaking of Scotch, I'm contemplating joining the local Single Malt Whisky Club. Had some exquisite samples last night ...
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:47pm
tonyc:
The channel separation in this track is even weirder than in the Annea Lockwood -- do not be alarmed ... all is as it should be. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:47pm
Rance Mohammitz:
Hugo: the wonderful single malt brands will wreck you for blends forever. I can't even stand Johnny Walker Black anymore unless it's drowning in Coke or similar soda ad I'm a cheap (Scottish) bastard.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:57pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I live in Washington State, just across the river from Portland OR, and we just this week started doing liquor sales in grocery stores (rather than state-run liquor stores). It's pretty weird to see people with grocery carts with kids in them, with giant jugs of cheap whiskey in them. The stores pull people in with low prices on the actual liquor but them hit them with ridiculous taxes at the register. It's pretty surreal.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:58pm
Carmichael:
Hiya Tony, hey everyone. Finally made it!
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:59pm
tonyc:
Hiya, Carmichael! |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 12:59pm
Hugo:
Let's see: Ardbeg Very Young (1998), Benriach 1966, Benriach 1976, Dufftown 1982 Old Malt Cask, Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or and Old Pulteney 12 years. Absolutely wonderful!
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:00pm
tonyc:
Coming up next: an unreleased tape piece by Bernard Parmegiani -- which can be listened to with or without scotch. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:02pm
Carmichael:
Ricardo, do you know the town of Elma? I have relatives there.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:03pm
Ricardo Montalban:
No? Where is that? | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:04pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Oh, that's around Gray's Harbor. I've only been in that area a couple of times. It's lovely.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:05pm
northguineahills:
Parmegiani! | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:06pm
Hugo:
Parmesani! | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:06pm
Carmichael:
Grays Harbor County, west of Olympia. Tiny tiny place.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:07pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Wow! This is wonderful, Tony!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:07pm
Stanley:
Wow, just tuned in to a terrific Scott Miller track and discussion of the joys of single malts. @Rance - completely agree with you.
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:15pm
tonyc:
Coming up around 1:30: Chris Newman & Meadow House. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:15pm
Stanley:
Have I jinxed the playlist?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:18pm
tonyc:
@Stanley: Not what you mean, I know, but playlist comments have been acting up for me today -- there's some kind of weird delay going on (for me at least). Anyone else having problems? |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:23pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
Hey Hugo, recommend Glenrothes for a spicy sweet whiskey
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:25pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
up perescope! | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:26pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
what that tense submarine film called U-BOAT something?
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:26pm
Hugo:
Then I guess you're not going to like the Ardbeg malts.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:28pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
are very sweet or very burned taste, Hugo?
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:35pm
Hugo:
They advertise it as being the smokiest, peatiest of all The Islay malts. I can't say whether its the most in that style, but it's certainly smoky and peaty. An acquired taste.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:36pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
yes I'm more Highland Park.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:40pm
listener james from westwood:
that parmegani hit the spot. ready for some spumoni!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:40pm
Ricardo Montalban:
AH, for a second I thought it was going to be the Portland music fixture Chris Newman.
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:41pm
tonyc:
@ Ricardo: Don't know that Chris Newman. This one is at times a bit like a more acid version of Ivor Cutler. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:43pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
Tony, ever heard Vivian Stanshall records - Sir Henry at Rawlinson End? (film is good also)
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:45pm
tonyc:
Yep -- have heard those records, which are definitely fun. Also have a horrible-quality dub of the movie, which I haven't seen yet. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:47pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
found the dvd recently for less than $3 - bargain even though it is only about 1 hour long! Trevor Howard plays Sir Henry.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:50pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
In fact I remember in the early 80s when I started listening to the John Peel Show, every 3-4 weeks there would either be an Ivor Cutler or Sir Henry session recorded for the show, along with other Peely favourites like Bogshed, the Fall or the Wedding Present.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:50pm
Hugo:
Highland Park is on the fall schedule, so looking forward to that.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:53pm
Hugo:
Funny, I was just listening to Vivian Stanshall - Men opening umbrellas ahead - the other night.
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:55pm
tonyc:
Chris Newman's band is sometimes known as "Janet Smith"... though not on this occasion. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:56pm
Hugo:
Ivor Cutler was on Peel's Night Ride in the late 60s. You can find the entire Sir Henry series online. I've never seen the movie.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:59pm
holland oats:
i'm late, what'd i miss | |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 1:59pm
northguineahills:
Ahhhh, mushrooms on TOAST! I though he was saying COKE! gives me and idea...... for toast....
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:00pm
Ricardo Montalban:
We were all drinking single-malt scotches, eating veal parmegiani, and now we're doing mushrooms.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:00pm
Brian in UK:
@Stanley I still don't know what I want but I want it now. @ Hugo the film is poor, in that it never quite captures the essence of Rawlinson End but worth it for Trevor Howard.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:01pm
conrad:
hey Tony! Any chance of posting an mp3 of "Wanker Prize" on da blog? Love it...tho I shutter to think what a 'wanker prize' would actually be...
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:02pm
tonyc:
Hey there, Holland Oats and Conrad! |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:02pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I was thinking the same thing as Conrad. It's a lovely tune, innit?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:03pm
tonyc:
@Conrad & Ricardo: Probably wouldn't be able to post mushrooms, with or without toast, unfortunately.... |
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:04pm
tonyc:
I mean "wanker prize"! |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:05pm
Ricardo Montalban:
That Chris Newman stuff is pretty awesome. I had never heard of him before.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:05pm
Brian in UK:
Broken Promises then, Tony!!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:05pm
Hugo:
Colin Newman was with Wire, right?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:07pm
tonyc:
@ Ricardo M: Chris Newman is great -- has a bunch of very varied releases, all worth seeking out @ Hugo: Yes, the Wire Newman is Colin |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:08pm
Hugo:
Ah, thsi was Chris Newman!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:09pm
Ricardo Montalban:
There is a Chris Newman in Portland who was in seminal NW punk band Napalm Beach and Snowbud and the Flower People.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:09pm
conrad:
Ricardo: There's a C. Newman/janet Smith album on Mutant Sounds that's got a great devolved version of "California Girls."
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:10pm
Ricardo Montalban:
The Chris Newman you played reminds me that I recently heard that John Cooper Clark is slated to make a comeback album
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:11pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Conrad: thanks! I will be sure to check that out. Sounds fun. Mutant Sounds is great, but it's just so overwhelming in its variety and splendor.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:16pm
Brian in UK:
@Ricardo JCC is back touring. One of his lines I used to love, still do, is 'Speaking as outsider what do you think of the human race?'
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:18pm
Hugo:
John Cooper Clarke was terrific!
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:18pm
Stanley:
@ Brian - howdy, just finished eating the ol' supper and it "was horrible muck and not enough of it".
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:23pm
Hugo:
I see that there is a Punk Britannia series at the beeb. Anyone of the UKers here seen/heard it?
|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:25pm
tonyc:
Apologies for today's mega-hissy hiss -- it's sort of unavoidable if I don't want to EQ out too much of the music itself. |
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:26pm
Brian in UK:
Not much of a television watcher, Hugo.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:28pm
Brian in UK:
Tongues sandwiches but its been in somebody elses mouth.
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:30pm
Brian in UK:

|
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:35pm
tonyc:

|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:43pm
Hugo:
Nothing left but the hiss ...
|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:44pm
Jimmy Carl Black (versus the Central Scrutinizer):
Hugo, you can get in on Beeb's iplayer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00s81jz/Punk_Britannia_PrePunk_19721976/

Hugo:

|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:51pm

tonyc:

|
Tue. 6/5/12 2:53pm
