Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

  Wed. 5/16/12 9:10pm glenn:

oh, and thanx for suzi.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:12pm seang:

the '70s ruled
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:13pm glenn:

hmmm. well, i grew up in the 70's. i wasn't so thrilled at the time.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:14pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Keith Morris of Off! namechecked that Sparks song as a major influence this week. Good taste.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:15pm G:

When I moved from England to Brasil in 1974, the Brasilian kids wanted to know if she was actually Brasilian or something, because Quatro is Four in Portuguese.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:15pm cubicle carl:

@glenn We couldn't wait for it to be the 80's.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Glenn, I didn't even exist until the mid-80s, yet I think the 70s ruled. That's the beauty of "retro", you get to pick which parts of the past you like!

Hello there everyone!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:16pm G:

@cubicle c.: Somone was wondering where you were earlier today, maybe in Irwin's comments...
Wed. 5/16/12 9:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Yes G, someone was wondering about cubicle carl (I didn't know him before then, so then I was wondering because of the question...)
Wed. 5/16/12 9:18pm Kat in Chicago:

I was a teen in the 70s and they were pretty boring. Being a kid in the 60s was cool though. Being 50+ right now is pretty awesome unless you're trying to find a job :(
Wed. 5/16/12 9:18pm Kat in Chicago:

Music has never been more interesting IMHO
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:20pm Deaconlight:

Is it 80s night?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:20pm cubicle carl:

wondering about the my whereabouts? How peculiar.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:20pm glenn:

harya, matt?
Wed. 5/16/12 9:21pm Matt from Springfield:

It was "inquiring minds", lowercase. So, if you're out there..
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:21pm cubicle carl:

must be my 15 minutes.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: purdygood, yerself?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:22pm phat:

A good evening, so far. Thanks Mr. Davies!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 9:23pm efd:

Hi DD! No, not '80s night, merely a coincidence!

Hello to phat, Matt, glenn, Kat, G, seang, john, and the in-demand cubicle carl! Thanks all for listening and commenting, and thanks to everyone else just for listening!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:23pm john:

I'm trying to decide if it's lame that I'm actually excited about the prospect of a new Ultravox album. In TWO THOUSAND TWELVE.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Midge Ure back in the studio?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:24pm phat:

What? New Ultravox?
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 9:24pm efd:

john, I'm excited! If that makes me lame then so be it!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:24pm glenn:

i am well, thanx.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:25pm john:

And the rest of them, ex-John Foxx, of course. Title track sounded great, too. Called Brilliant--think 1983 'vox with an old squeaky Midge.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:27pm phat:

I like this year.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:30pm glenn:

why not? there's a new magazine album, although i haven't heard it.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:32pm Deaconlight:

Kinda like Pink Floyd (Ultravox song).
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:32pm cubicle carl:

a new DB's album!!! I'm gonna scream like it's Shea Stadium.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:33pm Deaconlight:

Don't forget Visage.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:34pm phat:

New dBs too? Jesus, where have I been? I really like this year.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:34pm Deaconlight:

Suzi's brother tried to sell me stock in his enterprise many years ago.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:35pm Matt from Springfield:

It was Record Store Day--don't need just the specials, it's a good reason to look through the bins as well. I made a killin'!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:35pm Deaconlight:

You know your friend Tim and Julian Cope's wife used to hang out in NYC back in the day.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@Deaconlight: Really, Mike Quatro tried to get you to invest in his enterprise? What kind of enterprise was it?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:36pm Deaconlight:

That Nantucket? From NC?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:36pm Deaconlight:

Yeah. The Uzzell brothers.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:37pm john:

I saw Ultravox in I think '83 in Hartford and it was pretty damn great too.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:37pm Deaconlight:

New dB's -Falling Off the Sky - June 12.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:38pm Deaconlight:

Matt - Sorta like the Bowie thing. Invest in the re-release of his records.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:38pm G:

That still have that today. It's called Kickstarter! hahaha
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:39pm Deaconlight:

I have a Nantucket ticket stub around here somewhere. Deaconlight is hogging all the comments.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:40pm Deaconlight:

Weird thing. Quatro rings me up. We're talking about Moog. He's going on about what pals they were. Moog had just died a day or so earlier and it was me who broke the news to him. He didn't know.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:41pm Mike East:

Good evening everybody
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:41pm phat:

Saw the dBs open for REM a million years ago.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:41pm glenn:

meh. if it wasn't you, it'd be the crazy chick.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:44pm Deaconlight:

Wed. 5/16/12 9:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Evening, Eastern-most Mike.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:44pm Matt from Springfield:

TRANS!!!!
A+++ Evan!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:44pm john:

I still haven't made up my mind about Trans, but what the hell, it's only thirty years since I bought it.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:44pm Deaconlight:

Damn, Evan, I love Trans! Thanks. (Sample and Hold is my fave song.)

Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 9:45pm efd:

well that segue worked better in my head than it did in real life. Maybe I shoulda gone with the Buffalo Springfield version.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:46pm Deaconlight:

Welcome, Mike.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:47pm cubicle carl:

I'm sure it sounded good to the people doing their laundry.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:47pm Danne D:

Hi EFD!
Hi Funk Fans!
GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!
Wed. 5/16/12 9:48pm Kat in Chicago:

Thanks for reminding me that I need Trans
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:48pm Mike East:

I grew up watching shows that made "trans" out to be a piece of garbage, so it never came in front of me. But everything I've heard off of it, I kinda like...may be time to search the used bin.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:48pm cubicle carl:

Oh this literature album is great. Unblinking Ear turned me on to this.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:49pm keving:

wow, I feel like I've been hearing this band's name around a lot, but never heard them. this is great!
Wed. 5/16/12 9:49pm the glowing one:

Literature = bad sound quality (overcompressed mastering)
Wed. 5/16/12 9:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Danne Ddddddddd!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:50pm Deaconlight:

Evan, listening to your show is starting to help me get my mojo back. I've been in reruns for most of the past few weeks.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:50pm john:

i think i miss cheri
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:50pm glenn:

(i like trans a lot) then again, i also like neil and the shocking pinks.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:52pm Deaconlight:

I love just about anything Neil Young does. He's timeless and trendless.
Wed. 5/16/12 9:53pm Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & all friends!
As a Neil freak I duly purchased Trans when it came out, & totally didn't get it. Revisited a few years ago & still learning to listen with new ears.

The Trans *tour* was great, at least the show I saw in New Haven!

@Matt - I think I could be your mom, that is disconcerting.

@Evan - fnx?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:53pm Danne D:

hey Matt :)
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:54pm Board Member:

Ken told cheri to shut up this morning, and then erased her comment. I missed the comment. Gee, wonder what the comment could have been about.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:54pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Cheri is the Trans of commenters. Always sparking lively debate.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:54pm Deaconlight:

Yeah. Another NC chick!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 9:56pm efd:

hi Holly! Yeah, the FNX thing is messed up, although I have to say that if I were living there I probably wouldn't have been listening that much lately anyway. But still!

Greetings Danne, Barkevious, glenn (did I greet glenn before?), glowing one, kevin, Mike and Kat! Great to have you all here!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 9:56pm efd:

and glad you're getting mojo'd, DD.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:57pm G:

@DL: Is that kinda like VA is for lovers, but NC chicks kick ass?
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:58pm glenn:

devils and rangers 2-2 after 2.
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:58pm Danne D:

GO DEVILS!
  Wed. 5/16/12 9:59pm Deaconlight:

I'll let Evan answer that question, G. Damn I'm getting tired of doing math.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:00pm glenn:

go rangers. sorry danne, i picked the rangers in the east.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:00pm Danne D:

Ever since '07 Hoof N Mouth I am scared of dancing mice.
Wed. 5/16/12 10:01pm Holly in NC:

@G - we do, we do! Thanks for noticing! Although I sadly think I need to identify as a hen. A wicked cool hen ;-)
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:01pm Danne D:

teledente 666 is a sure sign of impending Devils victory :)

Game On! I'll be back
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:01pm Deaconlight:

  Wed. 5/16/12 10:02pm Deaconlight:

Wed. 5/16/12 10:07pm Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Anyone who's an adult could be *someone's* parent--try not to think of just who you could be a parent of ;)
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:08pm herb:

ooh, i just tuned in and i see that i missed the dB's. alas, but their recent free sunday hoboken show was really neato-licious. and, to have shaken yr hand, evan, is up there as well. (i've not washed my hands yet. it's kinda yucky at this point.) and the MIKAL CRONIN "i enjoy being a boy" reminds me of how i used to wear PENELOPE HOUSTON's pin that says "glad i'm a girl". last comment: i stumbled upon a thrift store score of JACUZZI BOYS, just $1. rockin' stuff, and, evan is thanked!! g'nite.
Wed. 5/16/12 10:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Whoa--cheri is banned? Or at least scared away for now. I missed that this morning.

Wonder what finally did it.

Wed. 5/16/12 10:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Still, after a couple years of toleration on the fringes to finally driven off, I wonder about the straw that broke the camel's back.

Just as well.
(snootily) And I *bet* she never donated to WFMU, either.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:19pm G:

It was just one Kennian "shut the fuck up" (9:42AM). She'll be back.

  Wed. 5/16/12 10:23pm Mike East:

  Wed. 5/16/12 10:24pm G:

So, just checking in after the dog walk, during which I was humming a Sparks song to myself, (Happy Hunting Ground) for no apparent reason. THEN, I find out the show started with Sparks.

Apparently efd has telekinetic powers or I have an internet radio station in y head. Either way, I'm in.
Wed. 5/16/12 10:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Woot Wooooooooooot!
World Goth Day endorsement! Thanks EFD!! :D
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:29pm Moe Howard:

Hey, Stevel! If I read the comments correctly during Amanda's show I believe anniversary congratulations are in order?
Wed. 5/16/12 10:35pm Holly in NC:

Hey! It's Jonathan Richman's birthday!

@Steve1 happy anniversary!
Wed. 5/16/12 10:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Wed. 5/16/12 10:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Nick Gilder, Geddy Lee, is there more helium in the atmosphere up in Canada or what? :)
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:41pm SteveL:

efd: You are correct, and thank you. My wife has tolerated me for more than a quarter century.

Wait. Holly, are you saying our anniversary is on JR's birthday? That is perhaps cooler than being married for 25 years. Thanks Matt.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:41pm Amanda:

SteveL -- Let me be the third to congratulate you, and belatedly. (How did I miss that?!?)

Also, Nick Gilder was a very great thing to hear upon turning on my radio! Hi efd!
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:41pm G:

@Matt: Higher latitude vocals. And Jon Anderson is from northern England.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:42pm phat:

I just realized that Nick Gilder sounds like Sam Phillips.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:43pm Mike East:

who was it that played a cover version of judy is a punk last weekend? Mike Shelley? Bill Kelly?
Wed. 5/16/12 10:44pm Holly in NC:

@SteveL - That's exactly what I'm saying! He's 61 today. 25+ years of marriage is beyond amazing. You and your wife must love each other very, very much.
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:44pm Mrs. Horn:

I was known to hit the high notes before "the incident. "
Wed. 5/16/12 10:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Ah, that explains a lot! (Except for Scandinavia, where the black metal shriek resides next to the death metal growl. We need researchers to study these natural phenomena..)
  Wed. 5/16/12 10:44pm Mike East:

Wow, 25 years. Congratulations!

Wed. 5/16/12 11:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Bravo, Tubes!
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:02pm cubicle carl:

I'll take the baby's arm holding an apple.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:03pm G:

616 is a Michigan area code, right?
Wed. 5/16/12 11:04pm Holly in NC:

(Ducking) I generally think of Neil as American (ducking WAYYYY low...)
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:05pm Barkevious Shabazz:

A date with Paul Williams wearing kneepads?
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:05pm Mike East:

I would have loved to hear an adam warrock track in the Avengers movie. Would have been better than that Chris Cornell piece of garbage that ran over the credits. What's Chris Cornell know about comics?
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:07pm glenn:

oh, holly. holly, holly, holly.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:09pm cubicle carl:

@Barkevious Shabazz That's what they said. It's just an old fashioned love song.
Wed. 5/16/12 11:10pm Holly in NC:

Oh Glenn, Glenn, i know, it's magical (e.g. delusional) thinking! But he's like Tom Sawyer or Babe the Blue Ox, y'know?
Wed. 5/16/12 11:16pm Matt from Springfield:

I always want'd to read a novell-er.
Wed. 5/16/12 11:19pm Matt from Springfield:

That was great @33.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:19pm keving:

I thought that was intentional and was kind of enjoying it.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:20pm SteveL:

Also digging the slow version.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:21pm efd:

I know, it wasn't bad! That's one reason I didn't catch it right away!
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:21pm Ike:

That was weirdly hypnotic at the wrong speed, actually.

Not that there's anything wrong with it at the correct speed either.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:21pm efd:

I'm going to come back on mic and say I'm putting it back to the wrong speed by popular demand.*
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:21pm efd:

*no I'm not.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:23pm efd:

dammit, that's the last time I let me cat come into the studio.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:23pm Ike:

Wait, was that intentional?
Wed. 5/16/12 11:23pm Holly in NC:

I preferred the slow version - figured it was a lead in to world goth day!
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:23pm Danne D:

Wait, did I miss an EFD miscue? Dang it now I have to wait until 2016 for the next one...
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:24pm efd:

As far as you know.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:25pm SteveL:

Can we really blame the cat? That would be awesome.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:25pm Danne D:

wow some Winnipeg chat and it's not hockey related!
Wed. 5/16/12 11:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: When you're volunteering, sneak some slippery oil onto the Studio A record player dial before Evan comes on! :)
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:25pm SteveL:

Winnepeg: Its not just for hockey anymore.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:25pm efd:

I'll just remind you all that radio is theatre of the mind.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:26pm Danne D:

@Matt - slippery oil is reserved only for episodes of Shut Up Weirdo...
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:26pm Danne D:

@SteveL I think I made like one tweet about Winnipeg and some Winnipegbot retweeted me. I guess it comes up so infrequently that they need the little twitter boost.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:27pm Danne D:

You know what would be kinda fun? If Andy can't do episode of SUW, having Evan be the fill-in co-host :)

Funk Up Weirdo! ;)
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:29pm G:

How was/is the hot choc?
Wed. 5/16/12 11:31pm Holly in NC:

Such a great reissue
Wed. 5/16/12 11:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Yeah, Andy C. would grease the record player. After being scolded he would be defensive, "I have the sheet on how to set up the board, and I thought 'grease the turntable' was definitely on here..." :)

I liked the fill-in Bryce did for Andy, I'm sure EFD would be a terrific co-host with Frangry.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:35pm Danne D:

@G Hot chocolate tastes like victory :)

I think Frangry would have EFD blushing the entire episode :) Still think it has to happen.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:39pm Danne D:

I have a great pic of Frangry and EFD from like the '08 Hoof N Mouth - but I can't find it :(
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:41pm G:

@Danne: Psst, someone ordered a break-in at your place, and it's "gone"
Wed. 5/16/12 11:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, LOVE this Ruckus Roboticus!
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:44pm Danne D:

@G - naah, my stuff is too boring to heist

@EFD in case you hadn't heard this - Meghan McKee tweeted that Boston's WFNX got bought by clearchannel. I know you like to keep up with all things Boston, even bad news.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:47pm G:

Wikipedia, WFNX: "On May 16, 2012, it was announced that WFNX would be sold to Clear Channel Communications. The station's call letters, archives, and other intellectual property will be retained by the Boston Phoenix. The sale is subject to FCC approval. Fans are petitioning Clear Channel to keep the existing format and the station's support of local music."
Wed. 5/16/12 11:48pm Holly in NC:

@Danne - you didn't read Evan's or my tweets earlier today ! :-(
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:49pm Danne D:

@Holly I'm sorry :( been off the twitters for most of the day :( didn't know if it was new news or not
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:49pm Danne D:

Now Holly's mad at me :(
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:49pm Mike East:

Good luck petitioning Clear Channel, Fans.
Wed. 5/16/12 11:50pm Holly in NC:

@Danne I so am not xo
Wed. 5/16/12 11:50pm Social Media Cops:

lack of twitter loyalty can be punished with anything up to and including a death sentence
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:51pm Ike:

I never heard FNX, but was it even any good anymore? WHFS lived on as a hollowed-out zombie long after it lost most of its credibility in the early 90s. WOXY.com survived as an awesome online-only indie station for a while, but didn't get enough commercials and didn't do pledge drives, and finally ran out of cash several months ago and was abruptly shut down....
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:52pm efd:

forget the earlier tweets, Danne didn't even read my earlier comment on this very playlist!
Wed. 5/16/12 11:54pm Social Media Cops:

he was in a hockey daze
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:54pm Danne D:

Ooops sorry EFD. Um, sorta was occupied with something else for the first half of your show...

...GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!!
Wed. 5/16/12 11:55pm Social Media Cops:

as i was saying...
Avatar Wed. 5/16/12 11:55pm efd:

uh huh, uh huh.
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:56pm Danne D:

I have temporarily taken back the EFD fantasy league lead. But I know Evan is just letting me borrow it. Though I'm borrowing a page from Skirkie and going with the Wall of Starting Pitchers approach on Saturday!
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:56pm Danne D:

(Said approach will probably lead to Evan retaking the lead of course...)
Wed. 5/16/12 11:56pm Social Media Cops:

changing the subject, uh huh, that always works...
  Wed. 5/16/12 11:59pm Danne D:

Thanks for a great show Evan :) will have to re-listen on archive :)
Sorry for the social media fouls :)
Have a good night everyone :)

and GO DEVILS!
Wed. 5/16/12 11:59pm Matt from Springfield:

This one goes out to a station DJ! :)
Thu. 5/17/12 12:02am Matt from Springfield:

Good night Danne! Savor your victory (with hot choc, if there's any left!)

Great show Evan!
