Greetings DCE and everyone else out there!

Morning!
  9:12am
Lucas:

Hello LIZ nice to catch your show live :)!!!
  9:13am
BenG:

Got the SWAG from the marathon. Amen Dunes album. Only WFMU would send such a weird set of sounds and call it a prize, and it is a prize. Thanks!
  9:13am

Morning BSI, DCE and N.G Hills

I'd like to wrap up warrrrm and snooooze outside on a pond shore while listening to this.

Liz B.:

I'm going to a show this week at a venue that allows smoking inside and I am already dreading walking away stinking like an ashtray. Are you with me or do you miss the times when smoking indoors was widespread?
  9:17am
Lucas:

I'm with you Liz
  9:18am
BSI:

witchu.
  9:18am
Cheri Pi:

I do smoke when I'm out at a show or bar but I prefer to do it outside; can't stand indoor smoking.
  9:20am
Cheri Pi:

So jealous @BenG, can't wait for my swag attack to arrive!
  9:23am
BSI:

Speaking of which, my adopted young'un is up later today. I hope he's taking his vitamins.
  9:24am
Cheri Pi:

Whom did you adopt BSI? We should meet up for a play date when BT gets back from Europe camp.
  9:25am
Lucas:

Hey I missed the meet up with BT, I was working. So sad :(
  9:25am
still b/p:

It's startling to remember how common it used to be...being so immersed in the smoke so often and trying not to breathe it in. Toxic and irritating and so stink-making that I wanted to leave clothes on the curb for trash pick-up. So happy it's mostly gone in indoor public spaces.
  9:26am
BSI:

@Cheri: SW, the man with the plastic goose and impeccable taste in ale. I'll have to send up some Flintstones Chewables to make sure he survives until the next marathon...
  9:28am
northguineahills:

I don't mind smoking venues in the summer, as I'm just going to throw my clothes in the laundry when I get home. In the winter, I hate having my coats/sweaters stinking like smoke, then I have to get them dry cleaned more often.
  9:29am
dave:

there's no such thing as a smoking venue in england any more
  9:32am
Cheri Pi:

Oh SW is so precious! I hope he's doing his chores and taking his flinstones.
  9:56am
Lucas:

And in the other hand you have these open air fastivals, like Primavera sound, where people are allowed to smoke. But some of them smoke more than tabacco...
  10:00am
Cecile:

No, I hate it. My skin breaks out and I feel sick for a day afterward. Love the no-smoking.
  10:00am
jt:

When smoking was common indoors, my wife introduced me to some spray by L'Oreal that was magic. Sprayed some on our hair after getting home and the nasty smoke smell was gone (still changed clothes of course). I don't remember what it was called but the packaging was Mondrian-like.
  10:02am
Lucas:

but when it was allowed to smoke inside, do people smoked marihuana inside the bars?
  10:02am
Cheri Pi:

Brian Olive= Cincinnatian!

I think I was in two concerts where someone was smoking pot
  10:04am
Cecile:

no, lucas. Sadly, no. People did anyway.
  10:05am
Cecile:

Ah, I remember getting wasted on the steps of the Detroit Institute of Art many times during that halcyon year my friends were smoking dope. (I never paid for it, except for beers for them from time to time, so when they all quit, I did too.)
  10:06am
Cecile:

PS: Med students just have the best drugs.
  10:07am

@Cecile: lol indeed
  10:07am

or they did when the med closets were less carefully monitored than they are. "Oh, hey! I'll trade you this percoset for that lid of sweet, sweet chiba."
  10:08am
Cecile:

we should all have been in f'ing jail. Seriously. White people priviledge. But then we all shaped up. Or I did by default.
  10:10am

@Cecile:That's better than jail
  10:12am
Cecile:

I know, but jeez, thinking about it.

hey, Liz, got any Dead C kickign around?
  10:14am
BenG:

I feel bad for cigarette addicts. What's the good? What's the good of being in their smoldering chambers of cancer sticks?
  10:21am
Lucas:

I think they don't see the cancer. Sticks of what? Of cancer, of what? Of cancer. Of what?
  10:22am
dc pat:

smoke = bad. My friends/bar people complained endlessly when the smoking ban was going in effect around here. Said all the bars would close. Years later, everyone's still in business, some of my friends quit smoking, and we don't smell like shit after going to a bar for a couple. Nothing but good.
  10:22am
jt:

@BenG

Smoking makes you look cool. Fact.

(i quit).
  10:23am

jt: I don't know anymore. Just makes people look like they're trying too hard to me. But maybe I'm just old now.
  10:24am

Smoking? The saddest thing of all, IMO, is how they've been conned into the idea that nothing's more rebelious or stick-it-to-the-man than smoking, as they give their money over to some of the most right-wing oligarchic corporations in the world.

i fell off the wagon a year and half ago, but i bought an electronic cigarette and haven't touched a real since. also, "they give their money over to some of the most right-wing oligarchic corporations in the world" was always one of the reasons i'd tell myself while trying to quit.
  10:29am
joe:

I would enjoy if there were bars that choose to allow you to smoke would still be allowed to do so. I understand that at a venue and what not there is to much of a mixing of an audience and honestly I have grown to enjoy not having the smoke while waiting for a band to go on and such. But as I recently was down in Philly were you are still allowed to smoke at a bar if there is no food served it was very nice to sit and have a beer and relax.
  10:30am

i love bad reputation! i like his version of "don juan."
  10:31am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Either outside or inside, I'm no fan of smoke. I don't like it a bit.
  10:31am
pezonik:

I love that they allow indoors smoking in Philadelphia. I don't smoke, but it gave me this great nostalgic feeling
  10:33am
dc pat:

yeah, might be nice if there were specific cigarette bars but I suspect they wouldn't be much fun.

It's funny when you start talking about something like this it's always "you're taking our rights away" but what about my rights not to have your smoke in my lungs? What if I poured some of my beer into your mouth every time I ordered one? It's like freedom to walk around with a murder weapon. What about my freedom to not get shot by a drunk idiot with a gun? OK, done.
  10:33am
pgw in mntclr:

even when i was in my smoking heyday and adding my own smoke to the indoor cloud, the lack of ventilation in McGlinchy's use to kill my eyes.
  10:34am

dc pat you are more then welcome to pour some of your beer into my mouth everytime you order one ;)
  10:35am

right on joe, see you at 4pm!

Comparing smoking with gun control, seriously?

Yup, the eye irritation was the worst. Don't miss it a bit.

omc: well not a comparison really just the a point about what freedom really means I guess.
  10:39am
dc pat:

Prinzhorn Dance School = Go4
  10:39am
joe:

I understand and totally sympathise with non smokers in 99% of this case. There are just certain places that I think it should be allowed and I definatly do belvie they are a small percentage of places. But if you take a bar that has been in business since 1933 and has always allowed smoking and is willing to put off certain customers by continue to allow smoking then I think they should be given that choice. Do I think you should be able to smoke in the back room of maxwell's OH HELL NO!. And I'm totally fine with banning all ages venues or places that serve meals (we are not talking bar pies here)
  10:40am
onemanclapping:

In Portugal there's smoking places and non-smoking places. The smoking places need to have air extraction systems, therefore you don't get much smoke in your face. Still, if you don't want to have any smoke at all, you can just go to a non-smoking place or even a non-smoking area (which usually exists). With a bit of good-sense and moderation, everyone is happy.
  10:40am
Mark from DC:

This Prinzehorn Dance thing is a blatant Gang of Four ripoff. They don't even do it well. Fail!
  10:42am
dc pat:

joe, omc: yep good points. I'm glad the Fox and Hounds doesn't allow smoking anymore....except now it smells like puke and soap.
  10:43am
Cecile:

I can't get upset at people who can't quit. The average smoker has to quit 8 times (!!!) to completely break free. When I saw a former co-worker (now deceased) still smoking when she was on chemo, I really understood how powerful the hold was. It's tough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Liz B.:

Onemanclapping, you'll have to tell me more about Portugal. I'm headed there in June!
  10:44am
Cecile:

onemanclapping, that makes sense. But the US is an all-or-nothing kind of place, sometimes to my pleasure but often to my chagrin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Liz B.:

Anyone skipping work tomorrow for pinko activities? (I kid)
  10:47am
dc pat:

BUT, I do think that my friends that complained so much don't really care one way or the other now. I'm talking mostly shows where I think it definitely should not be allowed. Man, I use to dj at this bar that had an "extraction system" and it didn't do jack doink.
  10:49am
Mike East:

I look back with nostalgia on smoking cigarettes with a cup of coffee at the diner while waiting for my eggs. However, now that I've quit, I'm glad that my eggs don't taste like smoke. Cigarettes smell nasty unless you are the one smoking them.
  10:50am
Cecile:

The Triple Rock had a great one, and it mostly worked, but still doesn't compare to no smoking at all.
  10:50am
Ricky:

Zammuto!! I saw him last month at Mass MoCA. He's from the Berkshires. Was this track from the FMA or his CD?
  10:51am

  10:51am

  10:51am
BSI:

Extravagantly Blush-worthy. cheers.
  10:51am
joe:

Cecile it's funny "all or nothing" is not totally true when you think about it because you do still have cigar bars. Makes you kind of think the law is a bit class oriented :). Thought of that while I nipped off to have a smoke by the way :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Liz B.:

Hi Edley!! Nice release... really lovely vinyl, too.

Ricky, the Zammuto track was from the CD, which is pretty crazy/weird in a good way.
  10:54am
pgw in mntclr:

yeah, i used to order the Grand Slam at Denny's with free coffee refills and have my cigarettes there on the table. it was blatantly hedonistic. and unhealthy.

I liked it more off the CD than live. He had a band called The Books, this is a new direction for him apparently
  10:55am
dc pat:

but they aren't really cigar bars. They're cigar rooms. At least around here there's no booze. But I'm with you, should be some smoke bars available. But wouldn't they just all allow smoking then? I don't know how you'd handle it...

Houston's got a smoking ban. There's one place that lets people smoke, I was there this weekend and the bartender watched me take a hit of acid and everyone was smoking weed. there was some really great performance art upstairs. I like the smoking ban and I like breaking it.

@joe: I dig the dillemma. There's no way we can rationalize buying the digital package (or whatever it is) that comes with Fox Soccer, so I'm stuck with whatever ESPN2 or Comcast10 shows on saturday mornings (arsenal supporter, so this weekend was a'ite).

Hi 777, Jim Price is a WFMU DJ who was on the air in the '80s (maybe also late '70s) and recently rejoined the air staff. His concept was to have a 1-min show, and why not? It's great!

Missed that one, DCP. I'm a closet Newcastle fan (mostly due to the vacation we took over there, really dug the city), though the Gunners always come first. Clinging with bloody fingernails to the top three...

I was in Porto (Oporto) in the early 90s. For centuries it was the center of the Portugal/England wine trade, and there are buildings related to that history. Other than that, it's mainly a kind of dingy early/mid 20th century type city, like Lisboa but on a smaller scale.... The cathedral's not bad as Euro cathedrals go, but it's not Chartres :-) If you get a chance, hit Coimbra, the university town...

Liz: Thanks for the Rock and Roll-ish send off. Another fine show. Much appreciated.

Liz B.:

People certainly do go crazy at Primavera, Lucas! It might just be all the drugs and beer, though...
