| Backsliding [on Instrumentutionalized: Slide Guitar]
On today's show we introduce a new occasional segment, Instrumentutionalized, a completely subjective and thoroughly incomplete freeform survey of music played on a particular instrument. Today: slide guitar.
Watch Bradford Reed in action, playing his instrument, the pencilina!

welcome, all early birds
Thu. 4/19/12 10:55am
kat330:
Hi, Charlie -- so where's the worm?
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 11:08am
charlie:
At first I thought you were making a tequila reference! Kat, that is a complex philosophical question. I have not yet figured out the metaphysical or musical equivalent of the worm. Perhaps if more people drop by, the sharing would be the worm. Maybe I should say "early adopters."
Thu. 4/19/12 11:17am
kat330:
I was already prepared to respond, and DON'T say at the bottom of the bottle because it's WAY too early and tequila's never been my cuppa IAE. :)
Thu. 4/19/12 11:21am
kat330:
This bird's been very busy already this a.m. Out gathering herbs from our garden, a haiku came into full bloom. I posted it here: kat330.tumblr.com/post/21381537582/a-surprise-haiku-bloom
Thu. 4/19/12 11:29am
Artie:
I never really liked worms anyway. Too wriggly, and where are the eyes anyway? Always preferred a nice plate of fish. And maybe some sweet corn on the side.
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 11:29am
charlie:
Any haiku that works in the word "turpentine" is ok by me.
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 11:30am
charlie:
Hello Artie. So in response to Brian Wilson's question, you do not like worms. Noted.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:31am
kat330:
@Charlie: On the less complex side of "worm philosophy," there's always Poe's "Conqueror Worm." I'm really looking forward to some quavery steel today, Charlie. I'll just get my grass skirt from the closet.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:32am
Artie:
And just when you think you've gotten to know a worm, and really understand them - they turn. Not Trustworthy.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:34am
Robin:
Fine, Artie, that means more for this early bird!
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 11:34am
charlie:
Hello Robin -- enjoy your breakfast!

Hi Charlie! I love the picture on the playlist. It looks like the woman is hypnotizing the man. I guess it's the only way the Yankee could learn to play the gee-tar.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:38am
kat330:
Joan Baez sings this lovely on her Christmas "Noel" album, arranged by the incomparable Peter Schickele.

Carmichael:
Good morning, bleeding edge people. I will actually be busy doing SOMETHING at the top of the hour. Hope it doesn't take too long. See you after.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:42am
kat330:
@Wendy: And notice how very UN native Hawaiian she looks too.
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 11:44am
charlie:
Hi Wendy, Michael, Carmichael.
@ Wendy -- yes, she's actually a half Italian, half Greek New Yorker in a PVC skirt teaching the vacationing Englishman how to be Hawaiian.
Thu. 4/19/12 11:45am
kat330:
@Carm: I'll be in keyboard absentia when you get back, so ALOHA! covers hello and goodbye! [I'll be listening outdoors though]

Here's the link to the Brattleboro story. They mention a cheese shop as well...=) Link may or may not work - boston globe has gone the pay route. If it doesn't I'll email it to you charlie.

Michael:
emailed it as well -
Thu. 4/19/12 12:06pm
wendy del formaggio:
Hmm, I'd like to know about this cheese shop. I wonder if it's the one downstairs from where I'm sitting right now! But I had to roll my eyes at the intro to the story: "ethnic" restaurants? I wonder if the diner counts. New Englanders are an ethnicity, aren't we?
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 12:09pm
charlie:
No, white people are not ethnic. Everyone else is. ;)
Thu. 4/19/12 12:11pm
Michael:
We'll never be New Englander's if we weren't born here. I've lived here for 25 years and I'm still the guy from Jersey.
Which actually is ok with me.

Holiday in Waikiki and 19th Nervous Breakdown are some kinda cousins.
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 1:02pm
charlie:
agreed, still b/p
also, Holiday in Waikiki introduced a theme in British pop of disillusionment with trips to warmer climes, including Safe European Home by the Clash, and Dreadlock Holiday by 10CC.
Thu. 4/19/12 1:04pm
ndbob:
true Charlie - though I did take a Holiday in Wakiki

@MIchael 12:11: I'm a transplanted New Jerseyan, too. Yup, we'll always be from away.
Thu. 4/19/12 1:07pm
Snortley:
Does all this slide have to do with the recent passing of Cyril Lefevbre?
Thu. 4/19/12 1:09pm
Carmichael:
Greg Ham of Men at Work was found dead at home yesterday. Absolutely nothing to do with this show; just thought music lovers would want to know.
Thu. 4/19/12 1:10pm
Snortley:
That is, Lefebvre, as in the Uptown Hawaiians, and other projects.
♥
Thu. 4/19/12 1:11pm
charlie:
Snortley, you will find the tribute Tony Coulter did to Cyril Lefevbre (also on Give the Drummer Radio) here: www.wfmu.org...

Does slide pedal steel guitar count as slide guitar, or is that different?

it's all good, trish. i'm not a stickler.
Thu. 4/19/12 1:17pm

Yes, caught that show; it was great. Led me to run down his uke work, too, which is quite good.
Thu. 4/19/12 1:19pm
Snortley:
I think I remember someone once grousing that slide guitar just can't be the same with the disappearance of glass Coricidin bottles.

Charlie: I dunno who was beaming more outside during your program today, me or the sun. The Allegro box doesn't display what's airing at any given moment, so it's a hunt to find which pieces made the biggest impact. A few though: Bradford Reed was a standout delight, as was Rebby Sharp and, of course, TMBG. Thank you the great Backyard Slide! :)
