A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

trouble, do you happen to have a cardinal with you this am? there's a lively all-day singer outside my window; i thinks it's the cardinal..
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:37am Vivian:

Chicken workshop? Trouble, are you raising layers or broilers?
Tue. 4/3/12 9:37am Brain in KU:

Hello trouble & friends. It's watching the heron take off that is so wonderful.
Sold a large chicken coop last weekend.

Jarvis' wife is French?
Tue. 4/3/12 9:37am Adrian in London:

Hey Tony; I was up in Sheffield last month. It was bloody freezing! But it's poshed up a bit since I was last there in the 90s.
Tue. 4/3/12 9:37am Rob from Maryland:

I don't know what the bird singing behind the DJ is, but it is assuredly not a cardinal.

Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 9:42am trouble:

vivian i am looking to grow eggs, not chickens... just eggs. my city backyard is tiny so i am not even sure i can fit 3 hens in there, but we are trying to figure it all out. salue brice! yes the kraftwerk thing, another hateful new yorker style problem!
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:43am JS:

Good morning, Trouble,

Who's today's artist?
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:45am Vivian:

Excellent! So am I! Any thoughts about the design of your coop? I'm researching designs which are dog-proof!
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:47am lewis:

ok this might be a bit odd - but compared to the rest of my life, being at work with Trouble on the radio is an excellent respite....
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 9:48am trouble:

o, today's artist is the wonderful jeffrey gibson! this piece is called 'trade'.
Tue. 4/3/12 9:48am Brain in KU:

trouble, here are some thoughts for your chooks.
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 9:51am trouble:

something like this vivian: www.thegardencoop.com...
i want an outdoor space that they can still use even if it snow, so the covering is good for sun and snow proofing. if you drop some sort of barrier below the ground level it will be difficult to dig under it
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:52am Cecile:

Trouble, fresh eggs are great. Watch out for foxes! You laugh, but I've seen them in my Mpls neighborhood. They are resourceful little scalawags.
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:56am Vivian:

Thank you for the link. That is a nice looking coop.
As far as my canine friends, I'm thinking about attaching metal sheeting to the bottom, bury it 6 inches into the ground and lay stones on top. That should discourage three dogs from entering the coop.
Tue. 4/3/12 9:56am Brain in KU:

Cecile, we lost eight to the fox a few years ago. Terrible thing to find out. On the plus side, the eggs are sublime. They do get through lots of water & guzzle any rice, pasta & suchlike that is lying around.
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:57am dc pat:

Ha! Somebody right next to me was just talking about getting chickens. Man...
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:57am annie:

cecile!! sending you a few pics of my recent project...
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 9:58am trouble:

vivian my egg man says if you acclimate the dogs to the chickens they will learns to behave. they are your dogs i imagine? not wild beasts running by?
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:59am Cecile:

nice, annie. I will have some cool stuff to share with you soon. Very very soon.
  Tue. 4/3/12 9:59am dc pat:

I wouldn't mind having couple chickens but I'd rather have a trout stream running through my tiny back yard.
Tue. 4/3/12 9:59am Brain in KU:

Vivian, we had to make it quite clear to our cats that the chickens were untouchable. They quickly got the message. I'm sure the dogs would be the same, our beagle pup still thinks it is fun & barks his head off.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:00am Cecile:

oooh. dcp. that would be awesome.
Actually, we have a nearby restaurant with a trout stream out back. It's barbaric yet, exquisite. Very, very exquisite with almonds.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:01am Cecile:

They take your picture with the net.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:01am Vivian:

Yes, they are my dogs. But we also have feral cats in our neighborhood, in addition to raccoons, possums, rats, etc. My obstacle is to make the coop as safe as possible for the chickens.
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 10:02am trouble:

yes vivian, that is my situation also. safety first
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:05am Cecile:

Good plan. They are scrappy fighters, but claws and beaks only go so far.
Tue. 4/3/12 10:10am Brain in KU:

Sad to say here in then UK foxes are an urban problem so it is very difficult to make it 100% safe as we found out. You have to do the best you can. trouble are you planning to get chicks or ex batteries?
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:10am Cheri Pi:

I hate you-but call me.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:11am dc pat:

  Tue. 4/3/12 10:14am annie:

cecile, file sent....
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:16am Jennique:

Good morning Trouble! Raising chickens sounds great. I wonder if you've seen this video of an eagle, a fox and two cats all hanging out on a porch together?
Tue. 4/3/12 10:16am Brain in KU:

Sounds good. It is amazing how many people think that you need a rooster to make eggs.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:18am Braveness23:

I live in the city and have had chickens for about 4 years. Right now I have four beautiful hens. Since we are so urban I wouldn't consider a rooster.
Tue. 4/3/12 10:18am Brain in KU:

There's nothing like collectying an egg that is still warm, you'll know because you will have heard the fanfare of laying. It's a miracle.
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 10:19am trouble:

good morning jennique! you missed your birthday dedication in the first mic break...sleepyhead
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:19am northguineahills:

ugh, the central shaft of one my earplugs (i use to sleep) broke through the body of the concentric plastic rings and was jamming into my tympanic membrane this morning. A little painful, but no damage.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:20am Braveness23:

Our birds are named Sarah, Lucy, Speckles and Joan Jett. Yeah, it's great to have fresh eggs. There is no comparison to store bought.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:20am JS:

Beautiful art work . . . thanks, Trouble!
Avatar Tue. 4/3/12 10:21am trouble:

the only thing i am a bit nervous about with chickens is how much work it will be for a chicken sitter if i go away. how do you all deal with that? like what about going away for the weekend even?
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:23am Jennique:

D'oh I missed it! Out walking the hound and running late this morning. How cool are you? I will have to wait and listen on the archives. Thankew, thankew.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:23am Braveness23:

We've had no problem at all getting sitters. You surely have a friend who would be thrilled to look after your girls for a couple days in exchange for fresh eggs.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:24am Cheri Pi:

I wish I could chicken sit, but watching your dog is also a real treat.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:26am Vivian:

From what I read, it doesn't take that much time to tend to chickens, especially if you're away from the weekend. Have you joined a local group of chicken folk? If you help someone out by chicken sitting for them, they could return the favor.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:26am annie:

trouble, one thing you have to prepare for is the availability of gmo-free feed for them... most commercial chicken and stock feed is sourced from gm supplies, big-time!
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:27am Braveness23:

Cheri, if you are serious we would love it if you would chicken sit but we have a pretty good reciprocating arrangement with another bird owner so we don't really need a sitter for them
Tue. 4/3/12 10:29am Brain in KU:

If you have friends with children it will be fun. Let them out in the morning, feed, change water etc.( the chickens, that is) They put themselves to bed at night, love to snuggle up on their perches. Make sure they are locked up. No problem.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:30am fox:

trouble, chickens aren't so hard. some people leave a lot of food (a chimney type feeder) and water (similar) and its fine, although it helps if they have enough space not to fowl it completely (heh) while you are gone.

other people just let me take care of it.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:30am Cheri Pi:

I understand. Maybe you could have a chicken party?
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:32am ~L:

My friend raises chickens and it is hard to keep them alive due to frequent fox attacks!
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:32am Cheri Pi:

Trouble-what is the art work?
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:33am Chicken Hawk:

I would be down for a chicken party.

Trouble, I know you dislike Facebook but check to see if there is a chicken group near you. I found fellow neighbors who raise chickens through that route. It's a good place to ask questions and obtain info.
  Tue. 4/3/12 10:42am βrian:

I've been chicken sitting this week for my neighbors. Pretty fun and already a dozen fresh eggs. They're let out once a day to get their ya-yas out. They really fancy dirt baths.

love darondo: according to wiki:
Darondo recorded three singles and played four shows in the ’70s, and then stopped and drove home in his Rolls Royce after he opened for James Brown. Later he traveled the world collecting interesting artifacts, became the king of Bay Area cable with three shows per day, and worked as a physical therapist coaxing patients to walk again"

Legend of the Titanic (Fare thee Well Titanic) by Jamie Brockett. Thirteen minutes of hilarity. It's an extended version of Leadbelly song that celebrates fact that boxing champion Jack Johnson was not allowed to sail off on Titanic because "this ship dont haul no coal." Fare thee well, Titanic, fare thee well.
