This VdGG album reached #1 on the Italian album charts. Romance language / Catholic countries were prog crazy. I lived in Brasil in the mid 70s. In Brasil, they still turn out for concerts by proggers who head down there...

I hear ya, George. I know they've added a date at the Sellersville Theatre in PA.

Mon. 4/2/12 10:10pm
G:
Wakeman would be a fun guy to hang with, but his two bios and the facts of his life indicate a certain deficit in prudence :-)
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:11pm
George of Troy:
Oh wow, thanks for the head's up, kramrellim! That actually might work out well for me (I've got family nearby).

Not two bios, two memoirs... Those Wakeman memoirs are fun, if anyone hasn't read them...

Mon. 4/2/12 10:15pm
Topographic:
Makes me a little sad that Jon Anderson was replaced by Benoit David after Anderson had respiratory failure. But, evidently his duo tour with Wakeman was well-recieved. I suppose it's pathetic to still hope for Yes triumphs at this point ... kind of like waiting for that great new Stones record where Mick and Keith sit down and summon one more great one from the ether. McCartney did it with Chaos and Creation, I thought.

Mon. 4/2/12 10:20pm
Fabio Fan:
Joe, are you an Emmitt Rhodes fan?
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:22pm
G:
I can tell you what happened there, Topo. (I know people who know people in the band.) Jon had respiratory problems, likely exacerbated by frequent marijuana use. He also didn't want to tour as much as they did. They hired a touring band singer (who sounded pretty good, actually), but when Anderson's health was better and he wanted back in, they put him off due to "existing commitments". -- Why? Because the keyboard and vocialist slots have been farmed out to hired hands who work for far less than a full member would get, leaving a larger remaining income for the main members to divvy up. Simple as that. Retirement fund for Squire, Howe, and White. I got Fly from Here (2011) when the used copies started showing up for 5 bucks on the web. It's Drama II, and not bad as such. It ain't 70s Yes, but I think there is no chance of that returning, just due to their very different energy levels at their age. Honestly, in concert they are a little tough to look at, and you can understand why they hired some younger-looking hired guns. In Brasil they've called Howe "Caveira" (Skull) since the 90s, and let's not even talk about Squire.

@G Thanks for the insider info. I think Wakeman's son Oliver was playing with Yes for a while. He even played a Starcastle reunion gig! I think Close to the Edge was Yes' zenith.

Mon. 4/2/12 10:29pm
kramrellim:
I understand Benoit's gone now too, replaced with someone else.
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:30pm
G:
Yes, Oliver was a hired hand, but when Squire and Howe decided to go back with the Buggles (so to speak) in order to use leftover Buggles material from c. 1980 to make a new album, Oliver was redundant and was dismissed. Rick's doctors told him not to go on long tours. He's has had several heart attacks, starting in his 20s, and who knows what else. So Oliver stepped in back at that point.
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:30pm

@Joe Well, many say Emmitt Rhodes sounded like McCartney and I would concur. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CvzawbXLS8

Yes, Kram -- early this year Benoit had "respiratory problems" and was 'temporarily' replaced. But then Benoit read in an interview with Squire that it was permanent.

@Joe .... Good analysis. I think you nailed it.
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:42pm
G:
@FF: I got the link on a Yes mailing list early this year, not sure how easy it would be to find the link at this point. The vid was on YT, of course. I recall that by late in the video Squire was ordering a robo-keyboardist while he was at it. Amortize the cost of the robot(s) over a concert tour or two, and meanwhile no more hired gun issues or "respiratory problems".

You guys aren't suggesting that I play "Owner of a Lonely Heart," are you? Because I might could be able to do something with that... |
|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:46pm
joe:
Didn't know Howe had anything to do with Buggles but i Yes's family tree is very convaluted. Really for me outside of White Bicycle and Rick Wakeman's work on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath I really can't say they have really ever had anything to offer me. Jon Anderson's voice just does not a agree with me.

|
Mon. 4/2/12 10:58pm
G:
I know what you mean, Topo, but Crim was not trying to have the same level of pop and rock in their music that Yes was going for. They were more "thinking" music. Larks Tongue in Aspic (playing off of Vaughn Williams' great The Lark Ascending) is really their masterpiece prior to Belew.
|
Mon. 4/2/12 11:00pm

Tormato is underrated, though the cheese factor was rising as Yes tried to please the suits who were saying their sales were dropping as punk rose. Notice the leather the group are wearing on the cover :-) Punk Yes!!!! lmao
