I dunno, kinda reminds me of some blobbish, nebbisher dingus from a Star Trek episode.

oh, ok, thanks miss cheri.

I thought the .gif was a scan of Kurt's brainwaves - the red spots are where a song name pops up. The green is him scratching his head.
  3:18pm
Ike:

@Cecile@3:09, world of difference: Cheri Pi is hard-rocking and seems intelligent and generally on-topic. Also, Cheri Pi is not obsessed with Mila Kunis and does not abuse commas.

Moving through some comments while around or ignoring others, I got here just in time to miss RT and LT. That's OK, though; I have had Shoot Out the Lights on autoplay in my brain since it came out. And that's the 2nd time today for the World Saxophone Quartet, which is not nearly enough.

It was tender and not hokey or gratuitous at all when wealthy Mila Kunis said to vagabond artist Jason Segal, "I want you to draw me like one of your French girls."
  3:49pm
Caryn:

Damn that extra c in there! BTW, Cecile, will we have to egg an entire block? On my budget, I may have to just throw one egg at each house to be able to afford that.

Boy, it took me about 5 notes to recognize Monk. I love this stuff.
  3:50pm

Congratulations! To my knowledge, NEVER before have any commenters forced Cheri off her Mila Kunis obsession. This is truly a banner occasion. Let's celebrate with a humorous GIF of Mila Kunis ripping off Justin Timberlake's head and devouring it voraciously!
  4:00pm
coelacanth:

Damn.I wish i could share my Mila Kunis experience, but (head hung down) I dont have one.
  4:00pm

theres a bizarre graffitti meme in north brooklyn lately, someone keeps scrawling "mila kunis is bored" all over the place. wtf.

Notices & Remembers Way Too Much:

Just to clear things up a tad. (Yes, anonymously, ironically.)

miss cheri used to be plain old "cheri". I remember "her" asking ken himself in his comments if "she" could change to "miss cheri" a few months ago. ken rather exasperatedly said "she" could call "herself" anything she wants, as long as "she" didn't overpost too insanely about the same couple of irrelevant topics. fat lot of good that request did.

cheri used to ask every DJ to play "the cake" and what did they think of the cake and how great they are etc etc etc (sound familiar?). apparently even she got terminally sick from insanely excess cake. but i expect a golden oldie recurrence at some juncture.

cheri was actually an alternate persona of Texas Scott (they both do that unaccountable triple comma thingy that no other commenter does). Texas Scott is actually a guy, and is actually in Texas.

I haven't seen Texas Scott post recently. I'm entertaining the hypothesis that Texas Scott may have permanently become miss cheri, like with "mother" in the last scene of "Psycho"

Does all that help?
  4:12pm
coelacanth:

Now i have familiarized myself...I've seen her on"that 70's Show".
  4:13pm
http://www.last.fm/user/johnnykevlar:

Do you expect me to read all of that?
  4:14pm
Cecile:

yes, Notices, it's really helpful.
  4:15pm
G:

@Caryn: cheri/miss cheri (no relation whatever to the serious poster Cheri Pi) always announces that she's leaving the board, but she never does. almost always, she posts again on the same show, anywhere from five minutes to two hours later.
  4:15pm
Cecile:

johnnykevlar, here's a stick. Go hit a beehive.
  4:16pm
coelacanth:

That's viable...I actually was once wondering if "cheri" was one of Irwin's personas.(he is obsessed with young ladies/girls,after all)
  4:17pm
steve:

miss cheri and cheri pi are different people... this all makes much more sense now...
  4:17pm
Ike:

Thanks, Notices, but I doubt that TX Scott = Cheri. TX Scott seems way too intelligent and thoughtful. The double- and triple-comma turns out to be (much to my chagrin) a relatively common phenomenon these days. (UGH!) I've seen other commenters do it too.
  4:17pm
Caryn:

@G: I know, she's like Columbo that way. "Just one more thing..." I just fear for the reaction Frangry will have to this whole thing. She might finally totally lose it.
  4:18pm

Minnesota Jeff:

Starting at "Submit you tracks..." all the way down to "2000-2012 Ken Garson" is italicized. The chat area is not.

northguineahills:

I and I be ital.

Maybe kg forgot to close his html italics markup that he opened right before "Submit your tracks". Or maybe he wants the playlist to be italics.

Interesting Google for typographers / Italics originated from Italian, because of an Italian! Who wudda thoughtit?

that's cool. hamburger. Very cool.

Etymologists must be the coolest people to hand around with at a cocktail party / or the most tedious
  5:04pm
Cecile:

the same might be said for typographers.
  5:06pm
hamburger:

sadly, no typographers get invited to cocktail parties, they're too busy kerning

Southern European and Northwestern European typefaces were split at the time printing got going in the 1400s.

Northern Europe (including England and Germany) dominantly used black-letter (we'd call it Gothic) script, which was the monastic handwriting style used in northern and northwestern Europe before printing.

In Renaissance Italy, they went back a little closer to classical Latin script. Most modern serif typefaces, and italic font, come out of Renaissance Italy.

I love typography, and hope to brush up on it because I'm going back to school for graphic design.

Do I have to buy the album in order to get "libretto" for this Dreyblatt piece. I'm geographer, and a geographic nerd at that.
Avatar 5:23pm

i'm afraid there's no libretto in the cd. but dreyblatt might be agreeable if you contacted him.

In China/Japan, it's kind of weird how typography is seen as high-art, in the form of antique scrolls etc.. compared to in the west (just my numbskull assumption)

Persian calligraphy is also highly prized, as are hand-illuminated books. Also, England/Europe seems (in my limited knowledge) to be more savvy about and appreciative of it. I wonder if it has something to do with moveable type?

one of the best questions i was ever asked was when i was walking through the medina in marrakech. i stopped to look at a painters work (which actually wasn't all that great) and he said from inside his souk "would you like a lesson in arabic calligraphy" i was so like, YES! it turned out he made these fairly beautiful paintings based on arabic characters, but the ones outside were for tourists.

G:

People in publishing and design can be very into fonts they like or hate, ideas about how to invent new ones (it's much easier electronically than it was in days of hot lead), etc. Even the federal government has programs to refine fonts and design to make signage easier to read, especially along highspeed roadways.

Mark T in VT:

I recently found out that when you see a "J' at the end of an email it is meant to be a smiley face. But the smiley face thingy turns into a J in emails sometimes if it doesn't recognize it as such.

I saw the Book of Kells when I visited Trinity College. One of the coolest hand-written books ever.
  5:29pm
northguineahills:

I feel sorry for whomever's hand illuminated a book ;)
  5:30pm
Cecile:

cool, Kurt! Did you get a painting?

G, yes. Helvetica cracked me up because it reminded me of my 'zine days and how intense we were about fonts and whatnot.
  5:31pm
Cecile:

Ha, ngh!

Carm, it must be so beautiful. Did you see the cartoon the Secret of Kells?
  5:32pm

(my handwriting makes me think sometimes I have multiple personality disorder because it varies in 'style' so much from time to time )

It took a completely traired and experienced monk roughly a year of fulltime work to make one new copy of the Bible. And they used a lot of abbreviations.

cecile, i bought some of his "tourist" paintings to give to family and friends. they weren't awful, just sort of typical. and he wrote my niece and nephew's names in arabic, which are now on their bedroom walls. and i drank his strong mint tea and gave him every dirham he asked for without haggling because i liked him so much. but i didn't think i could travel with one of his large canvases so i didn't get one of those.
  5:38pm
Mr Donut:

You parents out there, get Secret of Kells and show it to your kids. Kids need to see good cartoons once in a while.

Cecile:

I'm sure they love those gifts. And he sounded like a cool guy.
Avatar 5:39pm
DJ KG:

but the lesson in arabic calligraphy was enough of a prize for me. he showed me how it's all about making circles, so for example if you have a letter (hypothetically, of course) like L, you have the top right area open, so you have to put a flourish there - two dots or a squiggle or something. it's not exactly part of the letter like dotting an "i", but you have to finish the circle.
  5:39pm
Carmichael:

@Cecile: Haven't seen the cartoon. The book is astonishing. Even after so many centuries, the color is still brilliant. And the calligrophy is so precise it boggles the mind. A docent carefully flipped the page while I was reading it; I was holding my breath like he was defusing a bomb.

The "Mexi" bldg (as my Mexican gf calls them) are blaring musica banda outside, must turn up Kurt!
  5:41pm

Carm, the cartoon is about protecting the Book from the Norse raiders. It's laced with magic and gorgeous backgrounds and it's in kind of a graphic style very different than many animated films out today.

How does Marclay "jam" with other people? I saw him on Sanborn's Night Music many years ago, and was shocked at how he made music. He really opened my eyes to the whole Marble Blender style of music.

MN Jeff's animation looks perfect as an unrealized MBV or Seefeel album cover. (compliment)

I miss Marclay's xmas dj parties at the New Museum, where he picked dj's to dj his collection of xmas recores. Those were pure awesomeness!

@Caryn: The Old Man's Back Again is one of my favorite post-Walker Bros songs. Big voice, with orchestration and a Morricone soundtrack vibe.
