I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

cant get in to "music" that sounds like I ran over a shopping cart with my car and am dragging it for miles. Its shit like this in the middle of the afternoon that makes most people turn off wfmu, its a good thing it's listener supported, otherwise shit like this would tank it.

but i do trust myself and feel good about the stuff i play. the truth is, some folks are always digging something, while others aren't, so i have to just let go and follow what *i'm* feeling.

i really hope this show doesn't make you feel bad about the station as a whole. i would never ever want to work at a station that sounds all like stuff i play...

I dont like everything I hear on FUV- like I said, it's a backup for when the marbles in a blender band comes on. Go ahead and hate, but they play music. Some of it is actually really good music- and if you took your head out of your ass, you'd be able to hear that its NOT all old washed up shit- theres a lot of good stuff including a comprehensive covering of SXSW last week.

that being said- I prefer FMU most always. FUV doesnt have the soul of FMU. And seriously guys, how can anyone who hates FUV have a valid opinion if they dont listen to it? I love FMU, and yea, when I hear noise, it pisses me off and I change the station immediately. I can listen to a lot of crap most people would kill themselves if they heard, but I have my own personal line.

  1:35pm

No, I am personal friends with quite a few FMU DJs, and am really active- visit the station quite a lot, remotes too, and have contributed to the station for years, as well as my personal and professional time.

Look, I'm not sure there's anything to be gained by taking this debate seriously, but ...
Stubout, I've been listening to FMU for 33 years. There have been many shows over the years that play music I don't like, and when that has happened, I've turned off the station and listened to something else. I never have, and never would, contact the station and act like my personal tastes should have some sort of preemptive effect on their programming, or at all like my not liking a show and tuning it off is any big deal to begin with. One listener "lowering the boom" as you're now extravagantly attempting to do, is just self-importance.
  1:39pm
what's the use:

Bryce, you'll be happy to know that I was recently in Rome and got a private tour of Scelsi's apartment. It was amazing! He created a foundation after his younger sister passed away. Her apartment is on the bottom floor & basement level and the basement now houses his musical archives. His apartment is on the top floor and he also had the roof terrace - 360 views of Rome. http://www.scelsi.it/
  1:39pm
stubot:

I like the late night shows- Idiots delight - Vin Scelsa, one of the FMU founding father of sorts. Also been a fan of the World Cafe for years. @Ike- yea, I need to start listening to the web stream more, but I rarely listen to FMU on the computer except for at work.

And Parq- I just dont see how noise is music. Its not like being an old fart in the 60s calling rock music "noise", this is actual noise.

@Cecile - it was! Very inspiring. The apartment was basically as he'd left it. Matisse drawings casually hung on the wall, his instruments and books scattered around... a copy of his Salvador Dali painting (original was permanently loaned to a museum in Italy because the foundation can't afford the insurance). He was actually a Count, but he's apparently not so popular in Italy.

what's the use:

@northguineahills, you can email the address on the foundation's site - http://www.scelsi.it/ - and they will set something up (for free). Their English isn't bad and they really just want to promote his music. They gave me a stack of their publications (unreadable unless you read Italian) and a CD of his music. It was just my wife and I and a woman who works there. The place overlooks the Roman Forum fer crissakes! not a bad pad to make music in!

stubot is like Yngwie Malmsteen criticizing J. Mascis: "He's playing all the wrong notes!"

@Bryce: Any Rosenboom and Buchla?
  1:49pm
what's the use:

@Bryce, I dunno why he isn't popular there. The gov't gives the foundation a few grand a year at best. His music may not be, um, accessible enough? Who knows. Moussolini ran him out of the country during the war cuz he was hosting Jewish composers. Eventually he returned.

Penzey's veggie base has replaced beef and chicken when I need that something something in my cooking. Not real salty, just extra tasty.

Carm, if you ever make it to Minneapolis, I will take you to the home of all that is holy and in casings, Kramarczuk's.
  2:02pm
Chris from DC:

Ha, I was just going to mention that chorizo. I'm not a full time vegetarian either, but it's pretty good. Though not better than the amazing real thing at a very authentic taco joint I recently found.

Ken of Brooklyn:

@ Stubot, feeling compelled to write in after the fact. The vast majority of listeners who tune into Bryce's show rely on his instincts, insights and his idiosycrasies to constantly push their musical boundaries well past their personal comfort zone. There have been times when I have been turned off by something being played, but, upon further exploration and exposure, I allowed myself to shift gears and listen with a different perspective and intent of purpose. Much of the music deemed experimental and avant garde is meant to challenge the expected norms of contemporary sound, rarely does it sooth, entertain or comfort initially. I cannot count the times when something that irritated the hell out of me on first listen has slowly seeped into my musical canon, the seeds are planted, the irritation fades, I slowly open my ears to an alternative universe of music that broadens the scope of possibilities that I never ever considered before. Bryce has introduced me to so many artists ( Roland Kayn, Daniel Menche, Hermann Nitsch, the GRM musicians, Christina Kubisch, Eliane Radique, Henri Chopin, the list goes on and on and on, but the key to understanding what these musicians are doing is to try and meet them way more than half way, and Bryce's long format approaches allows for a truly deep study unthinkable on any variation of commercial based radio. We, as listeners, are very protective of FMU and especially of DJs such as Bryce, for they treat us to a monumental 3 hour sonic journey, sometimes more challenging that we might want, but ALWAYS & ULTIMATELY, essential educational listening.
