I think some of the Brooklyn bars forgot to close on time... at 5:30am I saw a couple of drunkards cackling wildly as one of them was trying to remain in control of the 25-cent automated pony ride outside of a corner deli!

Yeah. Had to order CDs so I can burn some of what I found.
  9:55am
Skirkie:

I got a portable hard drive 'cause of that place.
  9:56am
T-Zero:

@Skirkie: I was considering that, for saving things I don't want to burn but would like to keep. For now, they're just bookmarked.

Or is there an official WFMU procedure to Burn materia to a CD?
(Maybe it would include an automatic donatation
going to WFMU? (poorly worded, but you get the idea))
  10:20am

Thanks for new Tindersticks. Their best album in a bunch.

  10:29am
3D-Nyc:

Ah, so my annual pledge covers it already..
Curious.. how do other people Burn CD's from the archives.
  10:32am
T-Zero:

I don't have any special software, so I just use my system's built in features.
  10:33am
T-Zero:

I meant any special mixing software...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Liz B.:

As a general rule, it's a good idea to burn CDs at a very slow speed (8x or 16x), which helps to eliminate glitches/errors prone with faster burning.
  10:36am
T-Zero:

I use 4x for CD-R/W and 16X CD-Rs.
  10:39am
T-Zero:

I mean that's what I was using. The ones I just ordered were 52X, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. A tech person said they'd been using the ones I bought for a long time without problem, but I take that with a grain of salt.
  10:43am
Mariano:

Morning Liz and all! So nice to hear your show live for a change!
  10:44am
3D-Nyc:

oops - never mind- I didnt mean burn a CD, I meant download a burnable file from the archives..I presently have a workround but thought there may be an official WFMU
way to download the data file...
BTW- the Various dj's CDs that come with pledges are wonderful,
Great collections!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Liz B.:

Hi Mariano, good to see you here!

T-Zero: We've been using JVC Taiyo Yuden Silver Lacquer Hub Printable 52X CD-R Media (Everest Certified) for DJ Premiums for the past 5-7 yrs. They seem to hold up well, but I have heard many times that you can't trust a CD-R that is over 10 yrs old.
  10:47am
BSI:

at the risk of repeating myself (predictably)...
Circle can do no wrong.
  10:47am
T-Zero:

By over 10 years old, you mean because of the degradation? ... I was just looking and I have options to burn at fastest, fast, medium, or slow, so I can tell it to burn the 52x at a medium speed.
  10:48am
other david:

Far Out Fangtooth & Circle tracks were supoib
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Liz B.:

The 10-yr rule is apparently due to degradation. Though I do have CD-Rs that are over 10 yrs old... some of 'em have held up, some not so much. I'd say burn slow just to be careful.
  10:52am
T-Zero:

@Liz: Yeah, I wish the options actually listed the #X speeds rather than just fast, medium slow... I'll have to experiment if I run into problems with the new ones. But I've always read that they degrade.
As for degradation, just playing my old CDs at home I've not noticed a problem with the really old ones.
  10:53am
Carmichael:

Good morning.
  10:54am
T-Zero:

Same for cassettes bleeding... What I notoiced with the old casettes though is the tape gets brittle and snaps
  10:55am
Moe:

If you're burning them as audio cds it's best is to keep backups of the original mp3s. If you want to rip your audio cds some years later you'd have to use a lossless format or re-encode the tracks to mp3 - this would mean a loss in quality.
Okay, this is not a new advice, but I thought I tell it:)
Nice show.
  10:58am
George:

That is the most amazing Talk-over music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Liz B.:

Talkover music was Etienne Charry from the great album "36 Erreurs."
  11:18am
Mariano:

You and your bleeps and bloops!
  11:19am
Andrew Waterloo:

As for backing up your mp3s. If feasible, keep your mp3s in two places. Never trust one piece of media.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Liz B.:

What can I say, it's a bloopy day!

Sage advice, Andrew. If you're backing up on a hard drive, better back up to two hard drives.
  11:23am
robyn:

enjoying the set liz. super excited for the wfmu event in SXSW this weekend!
  11:28am
Andrew Waterloo:

My friend was unfortunate enough to lose her external back-up while she was re-installing everything on her laptop.

Enjoyed the show Liz. Gotta run, but thank you!
  11:34am
Mariano:

Bloopy day indeed... part of why I keep coming back!

Released exactly 45 years ago today - March 12 1967

@Liz B: Thanks for the advice about CDs, and also for the show, of course.
