brad paisley's a little bit too new country for me, but he's a great guitarist.

Glenn - do you have a date after which all Country music becomes bad? |
|
Sat. 3/10/12 11:14am
Girondo:
greetings from Argentina :)
|
Sat. 3/10/12 11:21am
glenn:
hmmmmm. not really a date, so much as a..... propensity to add steel guitar and fiddle to pop music and package it as country.
|
Sat. 3/10/12 11:23am
glenn:
and there's still lots of great country music being made, it's just not being played on the country radio stations.

Sat. 3/10/12 11:26am
northguineahills:
@glenn: I suppose that goes for most genres. My usual cutoff for country country is 1982, many noteworthy exceptions notwithstanding.

well shelley, i guess that settles that!

Brad Paisley made an appearance at William Shatner's broadway show a few weeks ago - we rented a guitar to them...a D28 if I remember right.

mrmucho:
'82 is about where records in all genres started to sound bad due to recording techniques. it's only gotten worse. my only beef with modern country is that they are basically making rock records with some twang.
|
Sat. 3/10/12 11:34am
glenn:
nothing. brad paisley doesn't engage me the same way george jones or don gibson or ernest tubb or even robby fulks or laura cantrell do.
|
Sat. 3/10/12 11:34am
northguineahills:
I don't think anything is wrong w/ Brad Paisley per se, but his country is more pop then country. The only problem I can find w/ that track is the production values (placement of the instrument mics, etc). His virtuosity on the guitar makes his music stand out compare to what usually comes out of Nashville these days.

It's almost like there was only one band in existence playing every single genre being recorded in LA for top 40 radio... (see JSG's link)

By the by when did Country & Western become Country. 'Bout the same time Rock 'n Roll became Rock.
|
Sat. 3/10/12 12:02pm
glenn:
actually, way back when, there were country charts and there were western charts. somewhere around the mid 40's they kinda got lumped together.

Our library must still have a stockpile of C & W labels. As they are still in use. If in doubt file under Rock & Pop!!
