  12:06pm
Duane:

Thank you k330! I had a blast and thank YOU for bearing with my atonal rendition:)
  12:06pm
Cecile:

damn I missed the Dogg.
  12:08pm
Duane:

Cecile: Yeah, I needed a prop for that one...and what about Ira K rippin that sax solo up like it was a draft card??!!
  12:09pm
Cecile:

that was crazy.
  12:10pm
BodegaMan:

Hey Duane, great marathon especially the Family Affair of week 1. Sister, pops and Auntie were all great additions. Sign them up for next year.
  12:10pm
Caryn:

The sax solo was fine! But you and your snifter of Hennessey were awesome too!
  12:10pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hi Duane!
  12:11pm
Guessing:

alternate album title: "Just Being Diana"
  12:13pm
Duane:

Thanks BoMan! I think my dad might actually make an appearance with my uncle Derrick In a couple weeks (fingers crossed). Thank you Caryn:) Too kind, too kind. Jan: How are you buddy? Guessing: *Smiles*
  12:14pm
Cecile:

caryn, ITA. I think the wrap sweater made it.
  12:16pm
Deepak:

keep playing that music wfmu
  12:17pm
Duane:

Thank Hatch for that wrap sweater styling idea Cecile
  12:20pm
kata:

good morning all ! late to work and late to the show. more bummed that I keep missing the start of the show. work can suck it ! :)
  12:21pm
BodegaMan:

The title of this set should be "songs that make you think of all the other songs they sound like."
  12:21pm
Cecile:

Hatch knows what the ladies like.
  12:22pm
Duane:

Bodega Man: Examples please..I like that thread idea:)
  12:26pm
kat330:

Heard this morning that the first #1 male hit at Motown was the Temptations "My Girl." That was my HS boyfriend's and my, well, "our song."
  12:27pm
Cecile:

how about the collected work of Ray Parker, Jr?
  12:28pm
Duane:

ha ha Kat. Speaking of the Temptations..that David Ruffin Unsung was *smh* whoa! Cecile: Funny enough he played Guitar on this Dynamic Superiors track! Ashford & Simpson production!
  12:28pm
Nathan:

Duane, you always play the stuff that makes me wave my finger in the air in righteousness!
  12:29pm
Duane:

RP jr.
  12:29pm
Cecile:

Nice!
I only caught a tiny bit - but it was the bit where his kids were going "My father didn't die in a crack house! My father died in a hospital!"
  12:30pm
BodegaMan:

I'm working so only listening at half attention. But it seems like Patti Jo sounded like a Jackson Five (vocals) Isaac Hayes (backing track) cross. I thought I heard some Bobby Brown/New Edition. Have to be on my game a little better next time.
  12:32pm
Cecile:

Duane - I read an interview with the Unsung producers where they said they picked out 90% of the artists, and TV1 picked the other 10%...I think Ray was part of the 10%...
  12:33pm
Nathan:

Here's one for all you disco heads out there... recent documentary from the BBC - The Joy of Disco

http://youtu.be/Qmxc-rfy4-0

Covers the fairly well-known basics but some great interviews with Nicky Siano, Nigel Rogers, Robin Gibb, Ian Schrager and Kathy Sledge...
  12:34pm
Duane:

Thanx Nathan. BDGA MAN: Yeah, the Patti Jo is not to far off. It was a Curtis Mayfield production circa Superfly era:
Cecile: Yeah, I can see the TV1 picking RP Jr, Atlantic Starr. Sheila E was great episode.
  12:35pm
slugluv1313:

awesome show as always, Duane! and finally got a chance to listen to/watch your amazing Ladies' Man rendition of "Careless Whisper," WOW! the Hennessy, the sax, PERFECT and way cool re: your Dad and uncle, i hope this happens!
  12:35pm
kat330:

@Duane: just catching up online re: your Ruffin reference (in-between slurps of soup).
  12:36pm
Cecile:

I thought she was great. Classy lady and was smart enough to walk away and take a break.
  12:36pm
robyn:

i was listening to an archived show (your one with feel my bicep) and didn't realize i was missing the live show. whoops and hello.
  12:44pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Spanky!
  12:44pm
frenchee:

omg I have a new show to add to my fave-a-lishes! Duane, this Spany song makes me sooooo happy! And it's got a bit of Dinah growl to it.
  12:44pm
frenchee:

er, SPANKY
  12:44pm
Lana:

honey, you really stirred up the romance "takin it down" with your crooning at Maxwell's on Sunday. We had a blast dancing to it... You were fabulous and you OWNED that room! love to you and what you bring to FMU!
  12:48pm
Duane:

Thank you Lana:)
  12:51pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Duane, I'm sorry I missed you at Maxwell's, but my computer had a major meltdown and I had a crazy deadline Monday morning :(
  12:52pm
G:

@Jan; It's archived. See the station homepage.
  12:53pm
Duane:

No worries Jan, It was a fun night. The archive is available if you wanna torture yourself..HAHA!
  12:53pm
Mike East:

Bad internet connection is screwing up my flow. Enjoying the show in spurts.
  12:54pm
Duane:

Thanx Mike!
  12:54pm
Mike East:

and yes, I agree - you killed at Maxwells and the sax solo was the icing on the Duane cake.
  12:57pm
Nathan:

Was it Duaniacal?
  12:59pm
G:

Duanity.
  1:00pm
kata:

love this Shirley song !
  1:01pm
Nathan:

@Duane Have you heard that Boddie Recording Company compilation yet? Lots of good bits on there...
  1:03pm
Duane:

Nathan. Yeah that Boddie comp is fantastic!! they had been working on that comp for almost five years i guess!
  1:03pm
Nathan:

What.. rights clearing?
  1:05pm
Duane:

Nathan: I guess this company put out over 600 records and they weren't really descriminating about what they put out. IF you had some $$ they'd press it up. SO I think it was just going through the sheer volume of releases to find the gems to re release
  1:05pm
kat330:

@Nathan: I was never a discohead, in the sense it wasn't a genre I would buy or sit and listen to, but I certainly danced my ass off to it out in L.A. w/my gay roommate at Studio One. Those were some wild Saturday nights! :)
  1:07pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Who are these guys (this is a recording)?
  1:09pm
Duane:

Jan: Twilite Tone is Common's music director and produced his first two records with No ID. Pretty wild!
  1:10pm
Duane:

JAn: Boddie is a record company and Numero put out a collection of their output
  1:12pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Ah, Numero I know about, didn't know about the Bodie comp...
  1:17pm
R i s k y:

Go duane!!!
  1:25pm
Nathan:

@Duane Oh that makes sense then. That's a lot of digging.

@Kat330 I was raised on it and therefore it's always going to have a place in my heart. I was only 3 when the Kaminsky Park 'disco sucks' thing went off but I remember watching it on the news asking my dad why people were so upset over a 'type' of music not realising the homophobic / racist undertones to the whole fiasco. I also agree with the 'message' of inclusiveness and love in the face of adversity. Not to mention the outright if sometimes cheesy eroticism. Fun, uplifting music for the downtrodden. You don't really get those messages coming across in music nowadays... and I think they're still important.
  1:29pm
Caryn:

@Nathan: agree with everything you said. Well, wrote.
  1:31pm
Parq:

Hi, D, joining the party late here. Add me to the list of those praising you H 'n' M performance. You looked good on stage. Man, you're a tall one, aren't you?
  1:32pm
T-Zero:

Join in late myself...

Indeed, Nathan. I agree.
  1:33pm
Cecile:

I think the problem was that while there was a racist/homophobic segment of the anti-disco people, there were just as many old-school soul and rock people who were tired of it and they got swept up in the wave. When the heartland went disco, they went all out. And the backlash was just as heated.
I was a teen when disco came 'round, and while there are gobs of tracks I loved then and love now, it would have been nice to hear something besides that on AM radio.
Legs McNeil even said in an In the case of disco, the baby got thrown out with the bathwater. A lot of singers and musicians had more to offer, but since they got tarred with that brush, it ended things for them.
  1:33pm
ALF of Hip Hop Slam:

Hey there Duane!? This is my first time checking out your show! Man! You're playing some cool music! I've gotta leave from my job for the day. Will check out the archives tomorrow. Take care! LaterZzzz!
  1:34pm
Duane:

Thanx Parq: Yup, I've been outed!! tall, gangly awkward..pix don't lie:) hahaha!
  1:34pm
Parq:

Also coming apologetically late to the disco discussion. I'll admit, i was solidly in the "disco sucks" camp back in the day, and the recent resurgence of it on FMU has made me do a lot of examining my attitude those days, and now. Still not my fave kind of music, but if I can make room for skronk and for murder ballads, I can surely make room for this.
  1:34pm
Duane:

Thanx ALF!!!
  1:34pm
chris:

Hi, Duane; hi, Everyone. Just had to say, goddamn that DJ made my day! Thanks, Duane!
  1:34pm
Cecile:

agh fragment - anyway, both Keith Morris from the Circle Jerks and Legs McNeil said now that they're older, they don't know why they got so overheated about 70s music sucking - Morris figures that it was just overkill. It did take me about 15 years to be able to listen to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors again.
  1:35pm
Duane:

Hey Chris!! Thanx for listening. Grab a drink..stay awhile!
  1:35pm
kat330:

@Nathan: Not only well-written, but you've brought up points about the backlash to it I'd never realized. I'd only thought it had been given a very wide mass appeal through the white and straight "Saturday Night Fever" vehicle. But I'm also not one for "house music" as a listen -- it's for movement.
  1:38pm
Cecile:

I remember people talking about "discos" in the 60s, but references to disco music didnt' start showing up outside NYC til late 74, early 75.
  1:39pm
kat330:

[IMHO is always tacitly meant]
  1:39pm
slugluv1313:

Cecile, you are so right -- i was a teenager too in the mid-1970s, disco just totally took over AM radio; complete overkill got me to "hating" a lot of it simply b/c NOTHING else got any airplay
  1:39pm
anne:

hey Duane, just had to tell ya i woke up to careless whisper in my head the morn after hoofnmouth. very nice work!
  1:40pm
Parq:

'Cile, true. When Hurrah first started advertising itself as "The Rock Disco", lots of people thought that was a contradiction in terms.
  1:40pm
kat330:

The "disco dancin' fool" era for me was 4-5 months in the beginning of 1978 in L.A. Glad to have had that life experience (even if I was hassled by the doormen almost every time for wearing ballet shoes and their liability concerns :).
  1:41pm
Parq:

Not for nothing, but even Tom Wolfe took note that the homoerotic roots of disco music were rather lost on "Mom and Dad and Buddy and Sis climbing into the Bonneville" to go to Disco night at their local Episcopal church.
  1:43pm
Cecile:

I liked the way dance music was really mixed up from around 81-85. There weren't enough records to wall off genres so you'd hear pop records, rock records, danceable experimenting, New Wave when you went out dancing.
  1:46pm
kat330:

Nathan, let me ask: Did you take any offense at Zappa's "Sheik Yerbouti" (if you know of it)?
  1:47pm
MD:

You guys are MORE than worth it!!!!
VIVA FMU!!!!
  1:47pm
slugluv1313:

YES YES!!!! in the 1960s, one would always read references to these fabulous discotheques! places where people would go dancing to all types of music -- but the disco "style" of music really did not start to happen until maybe 1974? and from what i have been told by those who hung out at the time, originated in the gay male discotheques -- and yup! this was TOTALLY lost on middle America!
  1:47pm
Cecile:

Parq, isn't it funny how both rabid music fans and angry censorious moralists both tend to know the roots of music between than the average listener? Both know that jazz was born in bordellos, that rock was a soundtrack for sexing and disco was born out of the gay movements. The former think it's cool, the latter not so much.
  1:47pm
kat330:

Duane, gotta say I just love your giggle. Makes me beam on this end. :)
  1:48pm
Cecile:

kat, ITA. it's very endearing.
  1:49pm
MD:

I 2nd Kat's Comment!!!
  1:49pm
kat330:

Indeed, Cecile. So sweetly sheepish!
  1:50pm
Cecile:

I meant "better than the average listener". Der.
  1:50pm
Parq:

This is turning into quite a love-fest, eh? Of course, Irwin will take care of all that.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

wow this sounds like Kate Bush fronting Romeo Void.
  1:51pm
slugluv1313:

some years ago, THE VILLAGE PEOPLE played at the annual St. Ann's festival here in Hoboken -- they changed into and out of their costumes in the Church's rectory . . . to this day i giggle at the *irony*
  1:51pm
Cecile:

I gotta say, Parq, Irwin nailed the Amanda song.
  1:52pm
Cecile:

ha, slugluv, that's great.
  1:53pm
Parq:

Stick around, 'Cile. I plan on telling him that in glowing terms.
  1:54pm
Cecile:

I did think it was funny when Irwin barely concealed his disgust when he read my name off for a prize. LOL!
  1:55pm
kat330:

@Parq: You'll have to stand in line -- and ALL of us will be behind Matt from Springfield no doubt. :)
  1:55pm
Cecile:

I won't be around to see that moment, Parq. I usually tune out when Lee Morgan starts.
  1:55pm
Caryn:

Went to see the Village People movie at the movie archive some years ago. Sitting in the audience, I was reminded of John Waters' words about one of his movie screenings: "You could tell who was gay in the audience based on who got which joke and who didn't." Exactly the same experience.
  1:58pm
Nathan:

I was/am also into the Circle Jerks. Seen them live more than a few times when I lived in SoCal. I could see in hindsight that disco reached the point of over-saturation. There was a long stretch where I wouldn't even touch the stuff. But I've started collecting it again in the past 10 years or so... and it's become a staple in my diet amongst several other genres..

@Kat330 If anything I only get offended when other people get offended.

I'd love to chat more with you guys but I've gotta date to get ready for!
  1:58pm
Parq:

What I remember about the VP is how, aside from the homphiles who dug them and the homophobes who reviled them, there was a large middle group who simply put on blinders about their "gayness" because they thought they were cute. They now *routinely* play "YMCA" at every heartland wedding reception and grade-school dance in the country.
  2:00pm
kat330:

Cool, then, cause I love that Zappa opus! :)
  2:02pm
Cecile:

true, Parq.
I don't even think it was blinders - most people just do not care who makes their music, and they don't listen to the lyrics so they don't worry about the message. It seems alien to me, but I am told this is true. :D
  2:02pm
kat330:

"Love your nails...you must be a Libra..."
  2:03pm
robyn:

Planningtorock is great. I'd like to see her live, I think she wears masks..?
  2:04pm
Caryn:

@Parq: a newspaper columnist wrote about a year ago about his country childhood, and about how he and his best friends would fight in the schoolyard about who got to be which member of the VP in their games. No-one was aware of any "gay" connotations. Watching old Hollywood movies, it's fun to spot the gay innuendo that the average viewer missed. As well as the gay innuendo that people got back in the day, but is not understood today.
  2:04pm
kat330:

I wonder if Duane spun that Kubin because there's an estrogen overload on his PL?
  2:05pm
Caryn:

@kat: I wonder if the name refers to glamour in the sense of "spell" or in the sense of things being glamorous?
  2:06pm
kat330:

Oh, it's gotta be "spell," 'cause there sure ain't nothing glamorous about it.
  2:07pm
Cecile:

you got that right.
  2:07pm
BodegaMan:

I was at lunch and missed Shirley Ann Lee. I don't have that new album but the "Downriver Revival" collection it first appeared on is my current #1 obsession.
  2:08pm
Caryn:

@kat: well, to someone who doesn't have to experience it, it might be somehow glamorous...
  2:09pm
Cecile:

if they're a reptile, Caryn.
  2:11pm
Caryn:

I mean, if your only knowledge of menstruation is hygiene product ads, you might think it's a time when you routinely go skydiving, bike-riding and running down the beach in all-white clothes, talking about how fresh you feel...
  2:11pm
slugluv1313:

shades of Giorgio Moroder/theme from "Midnight Express"?!?!
  2:11pm
kat330:

I think even the least empathetic male could sense it's not glamorous whatsoever.
  2:12pm
Cecile:

that might be exotic to non-mammals. I think most of us mammals know better. I think Felix is making a jokesch.
  2:14pm
Caryn:

@kat: yeah, tell that to Rush and his ilk, whose idea of birth control is advising women to hold an aspirin between their knees. I suspect they understand the workings of the female body a little less than they understand particle physics. By which I mean: not in the slightest.
  2:14pm
kata:

I love that you gals are talking about this ! Despite lack of glamour, some believe it is a time when we are closer to truth.
  2:14pm
kat330:

Yes, Cecile, on the order of "Crotch Kick Glamour" or "Cracking Voice Change Glamour."
  2:15pm
kat330:

Oy vey, don't get me started on Rush!! and his ilk, like lemmings eager to Rush out on a Limbaugh...humbug!
  2:17pm
Parq:

As is often the case on Wednesdays, I'm getting no work done (and this on top of the Monkees thread during Belock's show yesterday).
  2:17pm
kat330:

Hey, Kata, where's Kat in Chicago to make our meow trio?
  2:17pm
Duane:

Don't stop the flow now..I was just learning something ladies..No pun intended :)
  2:19pm
Parq:

If I had a dollar for every party I've attended where the conversation wasn't nearly as good as this here, I could be that million dollar donor Ken is quixotically seeking, but I've got to get some files through. Dig you all later and keep the stellar chatter up.
  2:19pm
Caryn:

@kat: yeah, I loved when Rachel Maddow pointed out that the issue is not that Rush is a disgusting slimeball (which he is), but that his statements have made it clear he has no idea of how contraception actually works, or how the female body works. And that the problem is that we have a bunch of old white guys trying to legislate how contraception should be available, when these same guys are making it clear they don't understand how the thing they are trying to control works.
  2:19pm
T-Zero:

@Parq: I hear ya. My work has come to a complete standstill since I tuned into Duane today...
  2:22pm
Cecile:

Well, those guys are the kind of guys who if they are caught with an extramarital bun in the over, send their baby mama away quietly, and she comes back 10 lbs lighter, if you get my drift

Most smart guys take an equal role in contraception, if you get my drift.

Anyhoo. I don't have to worry about that kind of stuff anymore. But it would be nice if people who have to worry about it don't have to worry about it as much.
  2:23pm
robyn:

"tighten up" is one of my favorite songs. charlie and rose lucas in wilmington, nc perform it. charlie's a blues guitarist who freelanced for otis redding, james brown, etc. back in the day. so good.
  2:23pm
Cecile:

I'm repetitive today, if you get my drift.
  2:24pm
BodegaMan:

@Cecile - thought you were just speechifyin'
  2:24pm
Cecile:

robyn, ITA. I actually didn't hear it until college, and couldn't stop playing it over and over again.
  2:24pm
kata:

ha hahaha.. I can't keep track of all the 'kat's, @330 !
  2:25pm
kat330:

Rush and the GOP make my blood boil so vigorously I can't type. I'll calm down here by resting for a few.
  2:25pm
kata:

Cecile you sure have a lot of drifts to catch today ;)
  2:26pm
Cecile:

lol, kata.

robyn:

the only problem with "tighten up" is that all the recorded versions i find are so short! should be at least a 7 minute long jam in my opinion.
  2:28pm
Jennique:

Duane, you are kickin' it as usual. Can't wait to get your premium. I only heard your voice at Maxwells (too crowded to get up to the stage). I'm kicking myself for not witnessing your stage props.
  2:29pm
Caryn:

I totally agree, Cecile. If you catch my drift.
  2:31pm
slugluv1313:

i'm with Parq -- fascinating conversations, funny VP stories, and Duane's amazing mix of music
@ Caryn and Kat and Cecile and Kata -- the whole thing is ridiculous, these "men" (and i use that term very loosely) do not even get pregnant, and my impression is that they do not even know how the reproductive system works -- yet they are the ones who are deciding he fate of others??? ugh -- gets my blood boiling (and i am another "Kat" too!)
  2:33pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Those men don't even appear to know much about how medical insurance works.
  2:34pm
kata:

ironic too that Barbara Boxer is stepping down just as the women's health debate is on fire.
  2:35pm
robyn:

whaaaaa???? barbara boxer is leaving???
  2:35pm
Jennique:

Rush (the band) issuing a cease and desist letter to Rush Limbaugh.

  2:35pm
Cecile:

Andrew Waterloo, they also don't know how a coffee machine works, either. :/
  2:35pm
robyn:

do you mean olympia snowe?
  2:36pm
kata:

oh yes, Robyn, yes. Snowe !
  2:37pm
Cecile:

Wow! Mirror! I remember looking into that album cover many times as a kid. Should have bought it and played it.
  2:37pm
kat330:

@Slugluv: Well, I'll own up to being Kathleen, but that'll be hard to switch to in midstream. Anyone who wants to use that to distinguish, fine by me as that's the name I was given.
  2:37pm
kata:

sorry, I'm trying to work, read comments and effing up facts, har.. thanks R !
  2:37pm
Cecile:

Duane, do you have the Thelma and Jerry album in your arsenal at home?
  2:38pm
kata:

disco song about the bible cracks me up !
  2:38pm
Caryn:

@slugluv: And it's not just the whole contraception talk, but the fact that the issue of the use of "the pill" for other medical issues seems to be completely alien to the whole GOP. Knowing women who use the pill to keep their frigging cancer at bay, not to mentions slews of other women who use the pill for other serious medical problems, it infuriates me to no end. Yeah, let's see Rush have a period for 3 months straight, and consequently lose his hair and develop severe anemia, because taking a prescribed pill would apparently make him a "slut".
  2:39pm
Sam:

This is what religion gets you. Crusades, jihads, wars of all kinds, and lots of unwanted pregnancies. How can anyone be against birth control? The insurance companies actually want to give free contraception because it saves them money by avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Talk about a no-brainer. The people who oppose it are also no-brainers.
  2:39pm
T-Zero:

@kata: That's why I gave up for now the idea of getting any work done... With this music, my concentration...
  2:40pm
Caryn:

It's weird being simultaneously pissed off and immediately placated by the sweet tunes Duane is spinning...
  2:41pm
kata:

GOP are all actors. Rush is an actor. Dems are asleep. Distraction to the max.

T-zero: sometimes Duane's show helps me get work done, but once the menses talk started I couldn't help myself !!
  2:41pm
slugluv1313:

Caryn, i was thinking the same thing! :)
  2:41pm
kat330:

The only positive on this is how it just might have sunk the GOP election chances. Rush has garnered a lot of enemies in his party for his stupidity. Good.
  2:42pm
T-Zero:

... I can't discuss politics when it comes to the religious fanatics and GOP ... I'd have a stroke...
Ironically, the work I'm trying to get done is transcribing the UN HRC panel discussion on violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity that was held today
  2:42pm
Sam:

All his advertisers pulled out - he's going to have to start doing fundraising marathons like WFMU! That's gonna be sweet.
  2:43pm
kat330:

Yeah, I, too, was wondering if Duane's beats were fueling the discussion. :)
  2:43pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

As my wise dad said many times "non of 'em are truly on our side..."
  2:43pm
MD:

We got love,love,love!!!!
  2:43pm
Cecile:

YES.
  2:43pm
kat330:

Singing along here, yeah!
  2:43pm
robyn:

it's ok kata. i love barbara boxer so i was freaked out for a second there. i would only accept her leaving if it was for a starring role on "curb your enthusiasm" (her guest spot was great) and even then, i still wouldn't be happy about it.
  2:44pm
slugluv1313:

YES!!!!!!!!!
  2:44pm
Andrew Waterloo:

There was a post on Twitter that said Limbaugh picked up advertising for the extra-marital affair dating site.
  2:44pm
kat330:

@Jan: That's why I registered as an independent my very first election in '72. Not that we've got a viable third party, sigh.
  2:44pm
Caryn:

Woohoo! Thelma & Jerry!
  2:45pm
still b/p:

What political men and demagogues do know is how to poke particular beehives for advantage and profit. Reason, responsibility and rationality are easy discards. And they rarely get as badly dick-stung as they ought to get.
  2:46pm
Otis:

"Men are too busy talking about how big their dicks are. If men bled, tampons would be free." -steven Tyler, of all people(!), maybe referncing alice Cooper?!.
  2:46pm
Cecile:

Otis, Gloria Steinem also wrote a funny article about that in Ms.
  2:47pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

My dad used to go in and "abstain" In other words he'd register that he'd showed up to vote, but wasn't going to vote for anyone... The people at the poll just wanted to choke 'em... Lol.
  2:47pm
kata:

so true b/p, and the media picks it up on cue..
  2:47pm
Sam:

Like that bumper sticker "If men could get pregnant abortion would be a sacrament"
  2:47pm
kat330:

Yeah, I think Tyler must have been quoting another source.
  2:49pm
Caryn:

I love how Bill O'Reilly is all "Why should my tax dollars subsidise your sex life?" about the pill issue (not that private health insurance coverage has anything to do with his tax dollars anyway), and then continues that Viagra should, however, be covered. And by "I love" I mean "I am made apoplectic by the insane doublespeak of".
  2:49pm
kat330:

Duane, appears you have a virtual harem here, heh! Pixels of women all over the place.
  2:50pm
kata:

Jon Stewart's comment on the subject from a few nights ago was very apt -- maternity leave vs. contraception. Monday night's show I believe...
  2:51pm
still b/p:

Steve Tyler championing a women's perspective or making declarations about sensitivity...is kinda like when Keith Richards told Etta James she had to stay clean to tour with the Stones.
  2:52pm
Duane:

I'm gonna enjoy this thread when I read it later:) I'm sweatin ovah here!! I gotta put on longer songs.
  2:52pm
Cecile:

sbp, a stopped clock is still right once a day.
  2:53pm
Caryn:

@still b/p: you know the women's health debate is in the crapper when one of the most woman-friendly statements to be made by a man comes from Steven Tyler.
  2:54pm
robyn:

wow "mama" made me stop in my tracks. what a voice and what a song.
  2:54pm
Andrew Waterloo:

It's a combination of having a base that is entertained by mean-spirited discourse and making everything a win-it-at-all costs issue.
  2:55pm
kat330:

So women, why do you think when a woman gets to a place of power (in the USA at least), she is NOT a credit to our gender 90% of the time? In our local area, every woman in power is no better -- often worse -- than her male colleagues. And then there's Sarah Palin.
  2:55pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

We all suffer from the "American Way"
  2:55pm
kata:

I don't know, I can entertain the idea of Tyler being a feminist at heart. But I don't know all that much about him. But you make a good point Caryn -- 'woman friendly' statements, the loudest voices being men's...
  2:55pm
Sam:

I'm sure Steven Tyler wasn't trying to be sensitive to women, he just wanted to say something kind of disgusting and graphic for its own sake.
  2:56pm
Cecile:

Andrew Waterloo, you know it's contentious when the headlines for the most innocuous celebrity or politician statement read :"__________________ speaks out on ____________ controversy."
  2:56pm
kat330:

Spanky has some pipes she does!
  2:57pm
kata:

great show Duane, thanks for the discourse commenters !
  2:57pm
kat330:

Well, end of discussion for the time-being. Research and write up a 3-page treatise for next time all. :) FINE SHOW FLOW, Duane!
  2:57pm
Cecile:

kata, Steven Tyler is about as much a feminist as I am a nun. He became one underage girl's legal guardian so he could take her on tour with him. And not in a nice, asexual mentor way, either.
  2:58pm
robyn:

@kat330 well, i read a similar question not too long ago, about why women are like that and someone answered "because it works for men." i don't think it's always about the gender of the person, but rather about the gender of the power expression.
  2:59pm
kata:

hm, Ok Ceclie thanks for the info.
  2:59pm
robyn:

iow, women can be successful, as long as they're like white men.
  2:59pm
slugluv1313:

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! right on, Caryn re: Steven Tyler's comment

isn't Viagra covered by many health insurance plans? i seem to recall that that was one of the blatant contradictions when Rush made those asinine comments
  3:00pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Thanks you Duane for another lovely Wed. afternoon
  3:00pm
T-Zero:

Aye. I must get this Bees album. I only have Octupus.

Thanks, Duane. Great show.
  3:00pm
Cecile:

that was great, Duane.
  3:00pm
kat330:

Yeah, the Thatcher principle. But Caryn can speak to the FinnPresident.
  3:00pm
Sam:

Same for minorities
  3:00pm
Duane:

Thanx Guys! I wish I had some time to participate:) Love you all! Especially you and you :)
  3:01pm
slugluv1313:

great show, Duane, THANK YOU!!!!!!
  3:01pm
kat330:

Moi and Rakastan!
  3:03pm
robyn:

@Sam exactly.
  3:05pm
Caryn:

@kat: actually, our female president was known more as a mother figure. They nicknamed her Moomin Momma, after the children's lit character. Then again, she was also an experienced politician and lawyer, the former head of the Finnish version of GLAAD, and a single mother when she took office. But I do think with the "mother" image, they just used a part of the virgin/mother/whore trio to brand her. So the cultural paradigm remains.
