Great to hear you on the radio, Doug!
( is the Internet stream really better quality than the 90.1 terrestrial signal? )
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:11am Amanda:

Not sure about that, Jack, but I've heard that 90.1 is better than 91.1.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Holland!

@Jack
It is in times like this, because the station is just picking up my stream and airing it. Listening to the stream is slightly more direct.
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:12am ?:

GTDS on the Radio!
Fri. 3/9/12 9:12am Brian en Angleterre:

Jack as I can only here on the internet I can tell you it is like Doug sitting on your lap. So I suggest you listen on the radio!!
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:12am trsh:

Oh hey, it's a volleying show between Doug and Amanda today. Fun.

Listening on the side, over here.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Hey question mark, how have you been???? (I know, asking you a question is a bit redundant.) The Drummer stream is live on the WFMU mothership today, filling in for Scott McDowell.

@trsh
Amanda better be careful, I have a wicked topspin backhand.
Fri. 3/9/12 9:14am Van in DC:

  Fri. 3/9/12 9:20am Cheri Pi:

I now use the flash player, it's very reliable and the only option left if I want to listen at work.
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:20am glenn:

hell's kitchen has to be better than hell's foyer. at least you can get a snack and stay warm.
Fri. 3/9/12 9:21am Van in DC:

The time to take a wee was before the show started Doug.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
WFMU should give out a "Trucker's Buddy" personal lavatory as a premium next marathon. For the listener who can't miss a single second!
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:23am ndbob:

One good thing about having a smartphone - taking the music with you when you take a wee
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
WFMU takes no responsibility for, um, submerged smartphones.
Fri. 3/9/12 9:26am Van in DC:

What the heck. Go for broke and keep the stream "live" for Steinski after this :)
  Fri. 3/9/12 9:26am ndbob:

I'm .. um... careful Doug:)
Fri. 3/9/12 9:29am Brian en Angleterre:

Can I recommend 'catheters r us' Discreet, no mess. Go out in public with no fear of embarrassment. If you find they are a pain in the ass then incorrect fitting is probably the answer.

Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Paul Sherratt, the bloke from Stoke (on Trent) taught me about Roxy Gordon. Bless you Paul. (Bless you Roxy.)
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:44am suea:

this guy has to lay off the quaaludes
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:47am Vivian:

Gordon's Long Gone Texas Woman brings Cracker's Eurotrash Girl to mind. Could it be the bass line?
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:47am trsh:

Texas torpor
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:49am still b/p:

ZZ Torpor.
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:49am Christopher I:

Roxy Gordon.. that's great stuff! First time for me too...
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:50am Andrew:

Country songs designed so that you can drive across Texas in a single album.
Fri. 3/9/12 10:51am tim from champaign:

@Annie,

Are you from Asheville? My friends moved to Maggie Valley from MI 2 years ago and absolutely love it. I'm going to visit them in about a month.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Roxy goes very, very deep. It is my sublime pleasure to introduce you.
Fri. 3/9/12 10:51am Brian en Angleterre:

Blaze Foley on the agenda
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:51am trsh:

..driving west, with a long, slow sunset.
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:52am northguineahills:

Nothing wrong w/ quaaludes...wait,... should have rephrased that.....
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Blaze would make a whole lotta sense, Brian. But no.
Fri. 3/9/12 10:53am Brian en Angleterre:

The Honda Quaalude is such a smooth ride it puts me to sleep.
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:53am Lewis:

outstanding set!!!
Fri. 3/9/12 10:53am Dead Corporate Eyes:

ha ha, ZZ Torpor...gotta use that!
  Fri. 3/9/12 10:57am Carmichael:

Hey Dougie, on the big board this week! And Amanda whipping out the RT tune. Good start to a non-payday Friday.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Carm! Kick off your boots and have a sassafrass.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:00am glenn:

sassafrass -- in a dirty glass.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:00am annie:

so, the only downside to the trip down here? the driver loves tom petty... and it is confirmed, i still just do not like his music.
Fri. 3/9/12 11:02am Dead Corporate Eyes:

though you gotta admit it's fun to make up you're own words to "Free Fallin"
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:06am Carmichael:

@Matt: Richard Thompson has lots of cajun-influenced songs. Check out Tear Stained Letter, that Jo-El Sonnier made into a hit. On the same album, I believe.
Fri. 3/9/12 11:06am Van in DC:

Love that stream. Had a wonderful Asian set after Charlie's show yesterday, and I discovered Akiko Nakamura thanks to Doug
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:07am Cecile:

I like Tom Petty, but not for hours on end.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:07am Carmichael:

Also good to see Annie and DCE on the board! And Doug and Amanda, of course ...
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:07am glenn:

dear drummer ; can we have a richard thompson themed show sometime?
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:08am northguineahills:

The Yemeni guys at the corner bodega gave me some cassettes. I need to have them translate as my Arabic is non-existent.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Although I loved most any Thompson track I hear, I am not nearly the expert, Glenn. He's outstanding for sure.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:09am Cecile:

I have to warn everyone that I am the least real person I know. I am so inauthentic as to be almost plastic.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:10am Hugo:

Once got a cd-r of mp3 tunes fom a taxi driver in Teheran ...
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:10am Amanda:

glenn, I could give you one. A good hour, at least.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:10am Cecile:

I liked him better when I was young and angry. His bitterness doesn't sit well with me now, although his guitar playing is blindingly superb.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:12am jason:

this Fatimah Al-Zaelaeyah is sounding fantastic, got to check out this Qat comp!

Nice to hear the Drummer in the house this morning
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

  Fri. 3/9/12 11:13am Hugo:

The first one with Linda Thompson is my fave.
Fri. 3/9/12 11:14am Dead Corporate Eyes:

Hey Carmichael, yeah, work has blocked my access to wfmu--gotta find a way around that system...at home today enjoying it, though!
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:16am glenn:

sounds good to me, amanda.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Brother JK, you I do believe you are correct. Alghoza!
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:17am Jeff G:

Stopping in just to say two things that I'm a little surprised haven't been said yet:
1.) Happy birthday, Ornette Coleman
2.) DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:18am Pawel Zaba:

Sindi was fantastic! (and happy birthday, ornette)
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:18am northguineahills:

@Hugo:Sweet! I also got a cdr of Ali Akbar Khan, and of the Indian classical group where my NYC cabbie played table. (I just dj'ed an Indian dj set, so he was surprised I knew my Indian classical music)>
Fri. 3/9/12 11:19am Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh wow, I didn't realize Ornette was still alive--happy birthday indeed. I bet he has no trouble blowing out 82 candles!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

WKCR is in the midst of its 300-hour Ornette Coleman Birthday Broadast. God bless them. And God bless you, Jeff G.

Did I forget to say happy birthday to Ornette? Lash me 40 times with a wet 8-track.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:20am Cecile:

300 hours? That's awesome
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:21am NEUstudio:

Good morning from Athens.
This is the Cretan Nikos Ksilouris maybe the greatest singer from Greece.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:21am Carmichael:

Amanda, I'm holding you to that RT promise you made!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Um, I was being hyperbolic Cecile. My apologies. Probably more like 24 hours. Give me another 40 lashes.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:22am Christopher I:

Doug, any Roxy on the blogs that you'd recommend?
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:23am Hugo:

@ngh: I wirnessed a live performance by LaMonte Young performing Pandit Pran Nath tunes at the Dream House while over in NYC last year. Hypnotic!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Christopher I:
I was poking around a bit before the show and coming up empty. Email me later and I will send you anything I can come up with.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:23am Jeff G:

(I'm like your annoying free jazz grandma, coming by to remind you of family birthdays and other obligations/obbligatos.)

Carry on!
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:23am Cecile:

Nah. Although I remember WCBN doing week-long marathons for Coltrane, Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The name of the Kirk marathon was my favorite: "The Rahsaanathon."
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:25am trsh:

More like the great free jazz grandma.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:26am northguineahills:

@Hugo: I'm retarded, My friend is La Monte's personal assistant, and I've yet to make the Dream House. I need to rectify this situation.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:26am Christopher I:

thanks Doug! :)
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:27am Christopher I:

Zahir has an unmistakeable voice! Amazing.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

You can hear the Great Free Jazz Grandma every Monday, Noon to 3pm, on Give the Drummer Radio. (The matzoh ball soup is a little greasy, but who am I to complain?)
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:30am Hugo:

@ngh: You should! It was pure luck for us as we were only over for the long weekend - tied in with the FMU recfair last year.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:30am Amanda:

I wish I had a *real* annoying free-jazz grandma...
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:32am glenn:

free jazz bubbys and zaidies. the mind reels.
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:33am Amanda:

  Fri. 3/9/12 11:37am Marmalade kitty:

Magnificent show this afternoon(morning)!!!
  Fri. 3/9/12 11:38am Jeff G:

I'm already an annoying free jazz dad; been turning my kids off to jazz for years!
