  12:18pm glenn:

  12:18pm Carmichael:

  12:35pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Big Ole FMUBooyah!!! We made it!!! Our own "Island of Misfit People" is vindicated 1.2 mil times over!
  12:35pm Robert:

When that abulance crashing song started, it sounded like somehing from the Monkees, and I thought, enough with the Davy Jones memorial stuff already.
  12:36pm Cheri Pi:

yep!!
  12:36pm SmokinJ:

Davy Jones:Genius RIP brother...

  12:39pm glenn:

oh joe, i saw this on youtube and thought of your show last week when you kinda sorta played the dead.
jerry garcia on the monkees - ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXs_rwjb_x4
  12:40pm Otis:

really digging this Imp Teen sonf...
  12:40pm Otis:

sonG
  12:42pm Otis:

duh... King Louie. I'm slow, behind and cant type today.
  12:42pm kp:

You think with Davy being from Manchester and with those eyebrows, he might be the father of the Oasis brothers?
  12:42pm Carmichael:

Do you have a Ronnie Montrose song scheduled today, Joe? Speaking of RIP ...
  12:43pm glenn:

is it just me, or has the playlist page shrunk since the marathon?
Avatar 12:44pm Joe B:

thanks glenn!
  12:47pm kat330:

@glenn: physically you mean? Or number of commenters?
  12:48pm glenn:

i mean physically, although it could have something to do with cats walking on the keyboard.
  12:49pm Woo:

Bay City Rollers doing psych-glam. This is why I listen to the Three Chord Monte.
  12:49pm kat330:

Heh! How many paws would that be?
  12:52pm Otis:

my hands turned to paws yesterday. not psychically but mentally.
  12:53pm kat330:

[I'll divide by four, Glenn] I've always thought the space to type was small, lending to my mistakes from poor vision. If a longer bit, I'll type into a notepad and transfer here.
  12:53pm glenn:

bless you!
  12:54pm kat330:

Gesundheit, Joe!
  12:54pm efd:

geseundheit!
  12:54pm glenn:

8 paws, usually only 4 at a time.
  12:58pm glenn:

don't forget the awesomeness of xray.
  12:59pm glenn:

and also, efd playing some great cowbell.
  12:59pm Robert:

In fairness, it's your 1st show since he died. Sometimes though, the cumulative effect over the course of a week of DJs memorializing somebody gets to be a bit much.
  1:00pm Spankyflop:

I concur. Saw 'em in 02. He will be missed!
  1:01pm SHIMMY:

Hi Joe. I never knew that Neil's participation in any of the Monkees tracks was confirmed. But it sounds like Neil's guitar from the first solo record! Is this info in the Monkees box or ...?
  1:01pm jljl:

I agree with Carmichael, would love to hear some Montrose. Bad Motor Scooter would *kind of* fit in.
  1:02pm glenn:

well, if everybody was playing stepping stone to the exclusion of other songs, that would be one thing, but the monkees were much more than that.
  1:02pm KevinfromBayRidge:

He might be considered the father of bubblegum. Like him of not, if Joe's "curating" the DJ tribute, then it's totally cool!
  1:02pm PFFlyer:

As a testiment to 60's/early 70's American television "marketing", I can remember all 4 of the Monkee's names, yet I can't remember important things like verses of the Constitution of our country, cousins names, or even my telephone number at times. Sick boy I am, but hey hey, I'mma Monkee!
Avatar 1:02pm Joe B:

Shimmy, in the track by track on the 1995 rhino ish of that album. there are also song by song credits
  1:03pm jljl:

As far as Monkees, Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow is a good Davy song.
  1:04pm SmokinJ:

Monkees will always rule..
  1:04pm kat330:

Along with "Rocky & Bullwinkle," "The Monkees" was appointment TV to this teen at the time. They've been on reruns locally so I can introduce the show to J.T.
  1:04pm dc pat:

PFFlyer: that's ok--what sucks is when you know all the words to songs you LOATH.
  1:04pm Carmichael:

Fun factoid: Steve Stills was being considered as the Monkees' drummer, but they decided his teeth were too bad. We ended up with Mickey Dolenz.
  1:04pm Woo:

The Hall of Fame sucks but it sucks more because these guys have yet to be inducted.
  1:06pm Carmichael:

This sounds like a Boyce/Hart song.
  1:06pm still b/p:

I remember lyrics to a song off Headquarters that I haven't heard in decades.
  1:06pm Mark, Don And Mel:

The Hall? No Grand Funk? Hall's a joke. Best Davy IMHO - I Wanna Be Free
  1:07pm kat330:

Was that last one about a wardrobe malfunction?
  1:08pm Mark, Don And Mel:

No Chicago either. :>(
  1:08pm Carmichael:

Hold On Girl is another good Davey song. Any song with harpsichord is cool.
Avatar 1:08pm Joe B:

or deep purple
  1:08pm KevinfromBayRidge:

As another pre-teen( circa'66) viewer, their show had quite an edge over the Sat morning Beatles cartoon.
  1:08pm jljl:

Did you know Mike Nesmith hated "More of the Monkees"? I think it's pretty awesome.
  1:09pm glenn:

(i kinda like deep purple).
  1:09pm Otis:

kat, she hangs out?
  1:10pm Mike Sin:

re: The argument about the Monkees being fake and all that really illustrates the importance of "authenticity" that prevailed among the growing batches of rock musicians who were using music as a statement in the '60s... Unfortunately or fortunately -- depending how you look at it -- those days are LONG gone.

That said, when we all turn to dust, all that will remain are the sounds that were printed to tape between the years 1966 and 1970. The back story won't mean as much as what hits the listeners' ears as the years roll on. IMHO, the Monkees (Inc.) recorded some of the most cleverly crafted, arranged, and produced of the '60s.
  1:11pm PFFlyer:

@dc, I make up my own naughty words to Monkee's songs, sing them in the car when they come on recently, and hope I don't get pulled over for being lewd, rude, or downright crude. They we're, and still are, such easy targets for lyrics changes if you know what I mean.....
  1:11pm Carmichael:

Boy, this is really re-worked. Sounds like Nesmith (or someone else) country-fied it a little.
  1:11pm Otis:

Nesmith turned into a sharp film producer... Timerider and Repo Man
1:11pm Mark, Don, Mel and Craig:

Deep Purple - The Fool - The magic of Ian Paice.
Nesmith wanted credibility. So we get Sidewalk Sam. Eesh. JoAnne was good, though.
  1:11pm dc pat:

ah, Mickey... I like Davy and all but...
  1:11pm kat330:

@Otis: Yes, just having fun at the wake.
  1:12pm king penguin:

If the monkees are fake so are the beach boys and byrds. and they were a hell of a lot funnier.
  1:12pm John L.:

You could play the Monkees for the whole show. I got verklempt when Yo La Tengo played "I Wanna Be Free" on Friday.
  1:12pm Cheri Pi:

My friend's pop played live guitar behind the Monkees' curtain for them, back in the day.
Avatar 1:12pm Joe B:

and the problem with the Monkee detractors' argument is ... the same could be applied to the four tops, darlene love, ronettes etc. didnt write songs, producer controlled it but they were still great artists.
  1:13pm Hardy Boy:

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones. That was a good one. I think Beaver and Krause were involved. Or, at least, Beaver.
  1:14pm king penguin:

Gawd. Nesmith wrote Different Drum, a huge hit, before Monkees were a twinkle.
  1:14pm Woo:

PACJ is amazing. I listened to the whole thing on vinyl last weekend.
  1:14pm PFFlyer:

@KevinfBR, didcha' ever notice that said cartoon had more advertisin' than the Monkee's show later on? Even as a kid begging for the breakfast cereal du jour, I picked up on that....there was an alligator on the Beatle's cartoon in the beginning....hmmmmm.
  1:14pm Parq:

I never understood why it's supposed to be a big deal that the Monks didn't write their own songs or play their own instruments. Isn’t the whole point of all the recent interest in the Wrecking Crew an acknowledgment that pop-rock in the 60s (for all the authenticity that Sin notes with his usual sagacity) was as much a studio-controlled, organized effort as the major pre-rock-and-roll hits of the Fifties? Hell, if it’s great to listen to, isn’t that something, maybe even enough?
  1:15pm dc pat:

It seems to be only serious rawk fans that recognize the greatness of the Monkees. People I know who aren't that into tunes think they're a joke.
  1:16pm PFFlyer:

@ Otis! Ya' don't say! Repo & Nesmith! I've got to dig out my vid & tape to chck that out!
  1:17pm king penguin:

Brooklyn's own Harry Nilsson.
  1:17pm Dawn Kirshner:

@Parq - The criticism was probably just leveled because they were held up to The Beatles. I remember as a kid, Last Train to Clarksville sent me into orbit. Then my brother brought home The Bubble Puppy and I was forever changed.
  1:18pm Carmichael:

What a brilliant Brill Building writing staff Kirshener had. Paul Williams, Sedka, Howie Greenfield, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann Cynthia Weil .....
  1:18pm glenn:

what dc pat said.
  1:18pm MD:

R.I.P.Mr Jones...Congrats to Joe B....!!!!!
  1:19pm Andy Kim Fan:

I think Jeff Barry was a great producer back then.
  1:19pm kat330:

"Last Train.." got the most intense airplay around here with Clarksville, IN, in the Louisville metro area.
  1:19pm Mike Sin:

You've got to remember -- there was probably a lot of jealously behind the resentment.

The thought process with the other "heavier" musicians at the time in CA robably went something like: "Hey man, there I am slogging it out on the Sunset Strip at all these clubs working for it, and then this 'actor' gets picked to be a pop star, and he gets put in front of all these great records, and receives all the acclaim, fame, girls, by just showing up to a TV audition! Damn, I really write songs! I play them! And, no label will sign me!"

That said, it doesn't detract from the greatness of the records created and Jones' contributions.
  1:20pm Otis:

@kat -- monkees are all about fun so most appropriate.
@PFF --greatest film ever made. Or really close.
  1:21pm king penguin:

Parq: those musicians were behind the beach boyds on every track. ihave the book right here, the Wrecking Crew. And Mcguinn is the only Byrd playing on Mr. Tambourine Man.
And it was only tha first album the Monkees didnt play on. They were in on the rest. I wasnt like they were mili vanili!
  1:22pm kat330:

Or the Spice Girls.
  1:23pm joe:

Ah trying to catch up on all this Monkee chatter
  1:23pm Cheri Pi:

psychodopia
  1:24pm Otis:

monkees do chatter. jsut don't go throwing poo.
  1:24pm Parq:

King P, re the Beachmen, my point exactly -- the Association, too, according to one of Shelley's interviews last year.
  1:25pm Parq:

Otis wins.
  1:26pm kat330:

@Otis: And apparently their ape cousins have immaculate conceptions.
  1:26pm king penguin:

does anybody think Dennis Wilson saw the inside of a recording studio?
  1:26pm joe:

I think the issue that most people have with the Monkees (and this does not include me) is that they did not come togeather in a natural band sort of way, but I think it would surprise people to find out how many bands from that time period were put togeather around one memeber by a producer it's just the Monkees were put togeather around a TV show as opposed to a memeber.
  1:26pm dc pat:

or fekkin Guns and Roses who I HATE.
  1:26pm Murray the M:

So, who would the 5th Monkee be? Tommy Tedesco?
  1:27pm joe:

Plus is you are going to invalidate the Monkees you woudl have to invalidate the Sex Pistols (which I know some people would have no problem doing :) ) as well.
  1:27pm kat330:

@Parq: Hey, you might like to know I have some stuff hanging out on the line. :)
Avatar 1:27pm Joe B:

@joe - neither did the Clash come together naturally.
  1:27pm joe:

@ Murray...Don Kirshner
  1:28pm dc pat:

uh oh, another group to start paying attention to: Night Beats
  1:28pm Otis:

parq: a speeling contest?
kat: i know that reference, just don't ask me what it was………?!
  1:28pm Murray the M:

Although, Appetite For Destruction certainly had a new sound for the time. I like Axl. Frontmen should be flamboyant and even difficult.

@ Joe ... Yes, I'd say you are correct, sir.
  1:29pm joe:

Oh I totally agree Joe. The Clash was all Bernie. I was pointing out what I think people's issue with Monkees is. I have nothing but absolute love for the Monkess
  1:29pm still b/p:

Also re studio framing vs. public image, weren't Spector and other producers and execs changing/inventing/playing with names and attributions and credits and stories all over the place with groups and artists in the years before the Monkees?
  1:30pm G:

This is not a slam. -- Last Train to Clarksville is at least 80% Paperback Writer, musically.

Pop hits are more of a sure thing when you're adapting something that's already been road-tested to go over really well with your target audience.

But then, almost all music and literature etc. plays off prior stuff in some way...
  1:30pm Barely Manenough:

Was there a touring version of the Archies with Ron Dante, I wonder? Of course I could Google, but that's not fun.
  1:31pm Yokum:

As Buck Owens said ... "Ain't no money above the fifth fret anyhow."
  1:32pm dc pat:

Good point Joe B. Well I think we've settled this issue: Anybody that doesn't like the Monkees is an idiot and should shut the hell up. I jes keeding...

G: you're right, they heard the tale end of Paperback Writer on the radio and wrote what they thought the song would sound like.
  1:32pm joe:

@ still b/p oh totally be around some day when Darlene Love starts talking about how many of the songs she is actually on that get credited to other Spector artists it would blow your mind.
  1:33pm Freedom Williams:

A nod to Martha Wash
  1:33pm dc pat:

still a great tune though--one of those tunes that made me want to be in a group.
  1:34pm kat330:

@Yokum: True for the artist, but I believe FMU owes a lot of its marathon funds to spinning plenty of above 5th-fret action.
  1:35pm dc pat:

thought this was going to be a Human Fly cover.
  1:35pm A. Below:

Robert Fripp would find all of this ridiculous.
  1:36pm dc pat:

ha!
  1:36pm VInce:

DC - You made me want to hear Halo Of Flies. Some Alice (and band) would be good.
  1:38pm PFFlyer:

@OatTIS; when I lived a couple blocks away from what was then known so Floridain as "Chimp Land" or sumthang stoopid, currently known as the oh-so politically correct "http://suncoastprimate.homestead.com/", yup.....the day monkey flung dung, s#*t REALLY does hit the fan there! Got a zillion clues for dudes that what to bring their gal-pal here. My buddy brought his soon-2-be ex here for a reason....yup, she needed a FULL shampoo when the it all settled. OH, I see 80 yr ol' Cheetah the Chimp from Tarzan fame went to that jungle in the sky recently too! Hey hey! HE WAS a monkey!
  1:38pm frenchee:

Joe, this show makes me wanna pledge again and again!
But my bank balance tells me no no no.
Rock on, Joe!
  1:39pm Human Fly:

Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:39pm the Male Man:

Play some Platinum Load!
  1:39pm SHIMMY:

Great version, but wow it was way better live.
  1:39pm G:

only 4K left to 101% of the goal, frenchee :-)
  1:42pm PFFlyer:

@ Yokum! Wettin' my pants laughing!
  1:42pm glenn:

http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-session-musicians-and-studio-bands.php
  1:42pm Bubbles Jr.:

I remember Chimpland. Somewhere around Ozona. This one old chimp liked to smoke cigs a lot.
  1:44pm Otis:

  1:49pm frenchee:

the chimp preserve is right near my mom's house. Luckily it's farther than a stone-poop's throw.
  1:49pm SteveL:

Dex!
Avatar 1:50pm Joe B:

Pat, dunno! They have a facebook page for the band. Paul the drummer is the guy who books their shows.
  1:50pm Paul Tree:

@Frenchee - They used to have those Dancing Chickens at Webb's City, until people realized that a hotplate beneath them was less than humane.
  1:51pm Parq:

Actually, the G 'n' R example works perfectly for me. I always thought they were a great single band. Then I heard live versions of the same songs and realized that the four of them had almost nothing to do with those singles. And still, I think those singles happen to be great. [For those who hate that stuff, fair play to ya.]
  1:52pm kat330:

Hey, thanks for that link, Glenn! [Too bad your name isn't Ray] Drummers and women included, whee!
  1:52pm PFFlyer:

@CherI Pi squared: I'm behind you on your request for the mighty Joe...ok, I promise...last monkee/monkey in-youren-DOH! We're all done with that....YEAH Bosanova sound of Flat Duo JETS!
  1:52pm On The Lamm:

After Izzy left Guns, it was downhill. Sort of like post-Terry Kath Chicago.
  1:54pm Parq:

Lovin' this Loveless, by the way.
  1:55pm G:

@Parq: I saw an MTV interview with GnR back in the late 80s, and one of them was talking about how far into the tour it took him to get his parts down to where he played them ok. Then I knew!
Avatar 1:55pm Joe B:

  1:58pm KevinWho:

Lydia Loveless, where have you been all my life???
  1:58pm Babs:

Joe was country when country wasn't cool.
Avatar 1:59pm Joe B:

kevin, i had the same reaction!
  1:59pm kat330:

Familiar with Pizzarelli but not Barnes.
  2:01pm Parq:

Speaking of country, I caught the last of Miss Laura's three-show stand at Hill Country, here in the Flatiron district. For this show, she reunited her original band, the one that played behind her at the time she made "Not the Tremblin' Kind". I have no great desire to eat at that restaurant again, but the music was wonderful.
  2:01pm PFFlyer:

Flyin' off into another venue such as you're playing now JB, I found this while looking up sumthang I have on tape http://www.gravelsauce.com/meantime.html Only had a chance to listen to Dynamo Hum's "Creepshow", but thought it was a keeper to add to my Gravelsauce tape.
Avatar 2:03pm Joe B:

TU, Glenn. Will do a bit later. Kitchen and clothesline (it'll come back to ya someday, Parq :) beckon me away from the keyboard for a while. Great show, Joe B.!
  2:06pm PFFlyer:

I always thought there was a "Bomb in Gilead" when I was a praticing Methodist also, 'cept the next line is "...to make the wounded whole". So sorry, but I thought they sang 'to make a wounded hole'. God I was a mixed up kid! No wonder.....
  2:07pm Parq:

Joe, didn'cha just want to spray the upstairs crowd in that place with shaving cream? The Laura crowd I could handle, but the dinner crowd made me feel like I was babysitting.
  2:08pm Parq:

Flyer, literally LOL.
Avatar 2:08pm Joe B:

PFF, that is where they got the title! when lee was a kid he thought balm was bomb!

  2:25pm the Male Man:

  2:26pm dc pat's boss:

  2:27pm PFFlyer:

@dc, yeah, the day comes when the bosses just leave ya' alone and you're on your own...'cept that then you've got to fight the monkees all by yourself! LOOOOOK OUT! DANG man, that chimp almost got ya!
  2:28pm dc pat:

  2:30pm JMD:

  2:31pm Bob 3:

Are We Not Men?
  2:32pm PFFlyer:

@DC, hmmmm, my scientific brain indicates that you are correct, yet, having observed apey behaviours...they all need a spanking, dammit! Now, go spank the Mon......to help change "primate" behaviours, right?
  2:33pm dc pat:

THEY'RE APES, MAN! JUST LIKE US!! APES!!!!
  2:34pm dc pat:

that was a fantastic goal bellow. didn't know you were a soccer guy...
  2:35pm dc pat:

holy crap, this Monsters tune is unhinged! Are you telling me nobody has used "The Monsters" before now??
  2:38pm Marlin Perkins XVI:

Wiki sez ... "The Hominidae anglicized hominids, also known as great apes, as the term is used here, form a taxonomic family, including four extant genera: chimpanzees (Pan), gorillas (Gorilla), humans (Homo), and orangutans (Pongo).
A number of known extinct genera are grouped with humans in the Hominae subfamily, others with orangutans in the Ponginae subfamily. The most recent common ancestor of the Hominidae lived roughly 14 million years ago, when the ancestors of the orangutans speciated from the ancestors of the other three genera. The ancestors of the Hominidae family had already speciated from those of the Hylobatidae family, perhaps 15-20 million years ago."

Bummer I wanted to get my vote for the Wanda Jackson cover of Amy Whinehouse in.
  2:39pm PFFlyer:

@dc, no, we're not APES as evidenced here by the Apes, "Beat the Double". & some complained about the Monkees....sheesh!
  2:39pm joe:

Oh Billy Childish he's put an album or two out.
  2:40pm Rodney Marsh:

  2:47pm glenn:

  2:48pm dc pat:

  2:49pm kat330:

@Joe B: "Le Chelsea Beat" tune was a hoot! Hipshakin' in le cuisine indeed!
  2:51pm kat330:

@dc pat: Thanks for correcting the ape/monkey dingus. I refrained from doing so earlier. Somehow I keep feeling I've got to reeeeallly tiptoe 'round these parts these days. Dunno why, but 'tis the case.
  2:52pm PFFlyer:

@MP#16; "anglicized" v. An·gli·cized also an·gli·cized, v.tr.
To make English or similar to English in form, idiom, style, or character: Some immigrants anglicize their names when they move to the United States.
v.intr.
To become English in form or character. SO! You've just proved that Davy Jones, the "Monkee", whom was a 'supposed' Brit, perhaps by marketing only, became English just to become an ape? Now you've got me & Joe B bangin our heads off our cages!
  2:53pm the Male Man:

Crimson Shadows are Swedish, ya cretin!
  2:55pm dc pat:

I feel it's my obligation to sort out ape/monkey issues. now as far as the Monkees vs the Apes, I'm not getting into that...
  2:59pm kat330:
