Sun. 3/4/12 1:17am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Holly!
I saw an earlier comment--are you a teacher? Or librarian? Or just a Dr. Seuss lover? :)
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:19am Marmalade kitty:

VampiSoul!! Wow, happy to learn more about Joe Bataan! If it's from VampiSoul I know it's good. Thank you so much!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:34am Destroit:

This is beyond a NY market. This is worldwide. I'm a douche bag in Michigan, and there is good radio in Michigan, WCBN is amazing, WDET is on point, but WFMU is at whole new level. Pour this station some money, it's truly unique. Give the money, so worth it.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:35am Holly in NC:

@Matt - Dr. Seuss lover. And currently not using my master's degree in health admin to tutor & babysit, dogsit, catsit, yomamasit, whatever. Loving it!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:36am Carmichael:

Hey Matt! Doing my taxes, that's how it's going ....
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:37am Destroit:

Hello Mario! Welcome.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:37am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Wish you stable, full employment soon, but at least you're having fun with Dr. Seuss (and WFMU!) in the meantime. I'm a fan of ol' Theodore's work myself.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:38am Matt from Springfield:

Carm: It's March, I gotta get on the ball with those myself. Deducting WFMU donations (minus swag received) gives a grain of satisfaction to the whole process.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:39am Brian en Angleterre:

Just dropped probably my last one. Have you got a song lined up Joe?
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 1:40am Joe McG:

I do, Brian! Should I fire away?
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:42am Destroit:

Brian has chickens. Big hug to Brian!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:43am david:

single file ahh
Sun. 3/4/12 1:44am Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, is that an original first printing 45 of this Jimmy Cliff? Nice find! You can get it if you really want it! ;D

Also glad last week's pocket-size Single File has been expanded into at least a Value size Single File this week!
Sun. 3/4/12 1:45am Holly in NC:

@Destroit makes an excellent point. I'm fortunate enough to live an area with not 1 but 2 really, really good-great college radio stations - but 'fmu is a whole 'nother beast. And think of all the folks who don't have local options!
Sun. 3/4/12 1:46am Brian en Angleterre:

Hey Destroit, are they still laying?
The Soft Machine 'Love Makes Sweet Music' with Kevin Ayres.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:47am Holly in NC:

I'll bite for Kevin Ayers. I'm in the pool!
Sun. 3/4/12 1:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

Saturdays have a great line-up. From overnight Friday, throughout the morning, afternoon, evening and into Sunday morning. Of course the rest of Sunday is also great, which leads to the Monday line-up, ... .
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:48am david:

We don't talk enough about how awesome wfmu's playlists and archives are vs. other independent stations...
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 1:49am Mike Sin:

$15 pledge gets you in the running for the Kevin Ayers "What More Can I Say" CD!
Sun. 3/4/12 1:51am Matt from Springfield:

The Archives are an unmitigated thrill! Listen whenever you want! Half the joy of WFMU! Please pledge to keep archive listening on demand FREE as it's always been!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:51am Rich:

@Joe M. Can you pay a $500.00 pledge in monthly Instalments?
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 1:52am Joe McG:

Definitely, Rich!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:52am Rich:

Thanks
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:52am Destroit:

Still laying B, holly, I explored your triangle radio stations the best I could, NCSU won the prize (despite some horrid dubstep/trance bullshit on Tuesday night).
Sun. 3/4/12 1:53am Brian en Angleterre:

david as the song goes 'You Don't Miss Your Water 'Till Your Well Runs Dry'. We are so spoiled here on this station with innovation and development taken as normal. There are no laurels to rest on here. So support, support, support.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:54am Brian en Angleterre:

Davy Jones 'Showbiz to his toes'.
Sun. 3/4/12 1:55am Holly in NC:

Thank you, Joe (Porpoise Song)
Sun. 3/4/12 1:56am Matt from Springfield:

LOT of "Porpoise Song" airplay here (even BEFORE Davy's passing I believe, lemme check). A wonderful, appropriate tribute, yet WE are the only ones playing it!
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 1:57am Joe McG:

Know what you want to be free from...and what is free form!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:57am Rich:

Quickly, whats the difference between a porpoise and a dolphin?
Sun. 3/4/12 1:58am Holly in NC:

@Destroit - KNC (NCSU) NOT on my list. But neither XDU (Duke) or XYC (UNC) serve Raleigh well. You were in the wrong part of the triangle!
  Sun. 3/4/12 1:59am Heartbreak0r:

The man I'm dumping says he really likes this song!!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:00am KP:

Did i hear a porpoise sing?
Sun. 3/4/12 2:00am Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh...what a mantra, very hippyish meditation. So poetic lyrics, such a lush rhythm. Nice that it "isn't called anything"! :)
Thanks for the demo, Joe!
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:00am Joe McG:

@Heartbreak0r: Ha ha ha!!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:00am Holly in NC:

size. size DOES matter ;-)
Sun. 3/4/12 2:01am Holly in NC:

That was directed to Rich's query, btw
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:01am Joe McG:

Ha ha ha!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:02am Brian en Angleterre:

Dunno, Rich I'll be your straight man. What's the difference?
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:02am KP:

I think the monkees did that on what will now stand as their last tour.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:03am Rich:

http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/dolphin_porpoise.html
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:03am Marmalade kitty:

oh yeah! thanks for the song! :) btw, still can't find it !!!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:04am Brian en Angleterre:

What's the difference between a buffalo & a bison?
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:06am Joshua K:

A buffalo is the american version of a bison.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:07am Brian en Angleterre:

You can't wash your hands in a buffalo!!!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:07am KP:

The Monkees did do that on that last tour, as i remember JB saying.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:08am Joshua K:

Buffalos have hot wings.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:08am Brian en Angleterre:

Think I better go now.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:08am Carmichael:

You CAN rollerskate in a bison herd.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:08am Holly in NC:

Also porpoises are less adaptive to captivity - born to be wild - yeah small, stout rebel porpoises!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:08am osvi:

Yeah! Breasts! Miniskirts! Theories! This show has it all! Pledge till it hurts!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:09am Brian en Angleterre:

Oh Roger Miller -lite. Nice one Carmichael.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:09am Joshua K:

Is the grand prize LPs? I am going to need to do a post-marathon pledge form to sort out all my swag.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:10am Rich:

The Wild Kingdom has nothing to compare to WFMU.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:10am KP:

A pledge with a porpoise.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:10am Matt from Springfield:

Across-the-world pledge in Singapore! Closer-to-home pledge from good pal Holly! Over-the-river pledge in New York! Thank you all!!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:11am Destroit:

I often find my way at the wrong part of the triangle. :( so sad, yet so happy.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:11am Holly in NC:

I am a damn pledging lady!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:11am Carmichael:

He's one of my favorites, Brian. A little twangy and a little crazy.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:13am Destroit:

Xxoo holly.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:14am Brian en Angleterre:

Carmichael, I remember watching 'The three burials of melquiades estrada' and one scene in a diner has buffalo herd playing in the background. Loved it.
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:16am Mike Sin:

$15 pledge gets you in running for "Baby How Can it Be? (3CD '20s-'30s songs of love/lust)!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:19am Holly in NC:

@Destroit......I was trying to think of a witty & clean yet mildly risque triangle-3way joke, but no can do. Tired. Anyone else?
Sun. 3/4/12 2:22am mike noble in dc:

hmmm... pledges must be backed up. i swore i'd get in on that last mic break.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:25am Destroit:

Haha, no need for clean. Real talk! This quasi bluegrass music is great.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:26am mike noble in dc:

bluegrass didn't emerge as a distinct form until after world war 2
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:29am Carmichael:

OK, night all. Spencer wants to lay on the bed instead of the couch. See everyone tomorrow. Same bat time, same bat channel.

@Mike in D.C. Point me at bluegrass history?
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:30am Destroit:

I grew up on bill Monroe, circa 1978, dancing in diapers.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:31am mike noble in dc:

@Rich - I seem to have only absorbed that info by osmosis. I can't point you to anything specific unfortunately.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:32am Rich:

Thanks Mike.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:33am mike noble in dc:

@Rich - maybe you could check out "How Bluegrass Music Destroyed My Life" by John Fahey

Up for grabs for $15 pledge -- "Take Me to the Water: 1890-1950" CD and book!
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:33am Joe McG:

Anyone else out there who hasn't pledged? Help me make my goal tonight, I'm pretty close!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:34am Holly in NC:

Joe, thank you for a great show, as always! Really have to go, between caring for a child whose bout of cyclic vomiting syndrome came on a week early (google it, it's NOT a joke, it's frigging horrible) & the Duke b-ball loss I am physically & emotionally all gone.

Love to all y'all. Oh, Dolly is one of my heroines!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:35am Rich:

Mike, thanks again.
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:35am Mike Sin:

Joe is 13% away from his goal -- Please pledge! We've got 25 minutes to do it!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:36am mike noble in dc:

@Destroit & @Rich - what do you think, would a bio of bill monroe be a good place to start, since he's the father of the genre?
Sun. 3/4/12 2:36am Brian en Angleterre:

Rich Old Timey was one name given to early styles, but in them thar days I guess they were less concerned in categories like we seem to be nowadays.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:38am Destroit:

Good night Holly. Dolly was great. This country bend is proper on this show. Good stuff Joe.
Avatar Sun. 3/4/12 2:38am Mike Sin:

"This May Be the Last Time" 3-CD gospel set up for grabs with $15 pledge!
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:42am Rich:

Thank You All! I really love all that early anglo folk music influence.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:43am Brian en Angleterre:

$210 needed. Do it NOW.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:44am Destroit:

@ mike noble, wikiPedia bluegrass and ride my man, nobody is going to give you better guidance if you want to explore the genre. Modern bluegrass, listen to the Steeldrivers.
  Sun. 3/4/12 2:47am Rich:

This communitie is the best!
Sun. 3/4/12 2:47am Brian en Angleterre:

Harry Smiths Anthology is a good starting point. All taken from singles 1927 - 1933 at a time when record companies would arrive in town and record whoever pitched up.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:48am mike noble in dc:

I like hearing Joe say "kitty." But now I want to hear him say "kit and caboodle." If he uses that phrase I will make another pledge. I'll add a $5 gratuity if he manages to get "pajama" in the same sentence.

Sun. 3/4/12 2:50am Holly in NC:

What David said.
Sun. 3/4/12 2:52am mike noble in dc:

if youns haven't seen it, i highly recommend the joe bussard doc DESPERATE MAN BLUES. if you're not content just listening to those old 78s compiled, but also want to learn about the eccentric guy who's the most renowned collector of the stuff. also if you are in the maryland vicinity, i hear the guy welcomes all visitors to his basement record library.
