avant reguard:
do you have a statistical breakdown of how many people pledge and where they are located. prob would make interesting information. of the 1.2 million needed where is your largest expense coming from, particularly if you pay no rent. im genuinely curious why it costs so much every year. is it mostly to do with servers, web hostings, massive electricity bills. i know its completely legit and accounted for and i will be pledging on the yo la tengo show tonight. it just seems like a colossal amount of money to go out every year. think if you published a detailed breakdown of the costs you may even receive more pledges. anyway phew best of luck with reaching the goal and i love the wfmu.

Fri. 3/2/12 11:59am
dave:
avant reguard, the DJs do periodically read off a breakdown of some of the bigger operating expenses. It sounds like the various costs associated with the internet streams are a pretty huge part of the costs. the costs of operating the transmitter site -- bandwidth to the tower, site rental, that sort of thing -- are not chump change either. it's pretty stunning, really, that the station can survive on only $1.2M/year. If you compare FMU's budget to that of, say, even a smaller metropolitan NPR station, it's just mind-boggling how much the station accomplishes on what is really an infinitesimal amount of money.

hi dave if you live on less then 10000 euro every year in total and youve been doing it for 5 years already and your say 39 now and you surmise you will live for 30 more years, if all the blood coming out of your ass radio doesnt turn out to be signs of something terminal then that amounts to 300000 euro which in dollar speak equals 400000dollars. i would never call 1.2 million dollars infinitesimal. ive been involved in pirate radio stations, community radio experiemnts, music and art collectives putting on large art festivals, costing peanuts, working in a voluntary capacity. a 15 dollar pledge in some peoples economy per capita is equivalent if not exceeding 1000 dollar pledges of other peoples wealthier income streams. Anyway ill shut up now. just wanted to say its alot of money. the US is expensive. anyway bottom line - wfmu is a great cultural and musical and educational resource.
