Julie is here like a ray of darkness on Irene's bright and Sunny Day :) But that works around these parts :D
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:04pm Irene:

Van, my adopter! Hi everybody! And, yes, Julie in the daylight!

  Mon. 2/27/12 12:05pm c2677:

IRENE: Any chance you can get Alasdair Roberts back on the show this year?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:05pm Van in DC:

My honor & pleasure. :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:06pm c2677:

p.s. I always pledge to your show because you're the reason I've discovered great artists such as him.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:07pm Upside Down Bat Benevolent Society:

Julie needs enough pledge cards to bury herself in, before the afternoon sun can strike her and turn her to dust!!!! HURRY!!!!!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:08pm KP:

good morning Julie and Irene.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:09pm KP:

good morning Van. we are seldom up at same time. i had to put aluminum foil over windows to gt to computer.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:09pm Danne D:

I wonder if they have one volunteer stationed to Julie's immediate left just to block out the sun from the window that's right there
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:10pm Julie:

Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:10pm Julie:

Mon. 2/27/12 12:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Irene and Julie--YES! The ultimate in ethereal collaboration!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:11pm KP:

Hey dont knock the Dark Night. It's not the right life but it's my life.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:12pm Danne D:

@KP I'm not knocking it at all :)

Having been at the station yesterday during Sarge's shift I can assure you that that the emcee spot really is the most vampire unfriendly place in all of Jersey City.
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:12pm Julie:

Kate! Pledge for Kate! Pledge for Irene! 1-800-989-9368 or look, right to the left!
Mon. 2/27/12 12:12pm Van in DC:

Hi KP! I'm usually here during daytime normal work hours mostly. Oh hey, hi there neighbor Matt!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:13pm Danne D:

I took a couple pictures facing that way and basically the light came out blindingly
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:13pm KP:

Hence Julie hangs out there.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:13pm Van in DC:

The funny thing with this song - I am not sure who selected it...Julie or Irene :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:14pm Cecile:

I am pledging because I have to leave soon because you guys are too relaxing for my mood today. Gotta catch up!
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:14pm Julie:

@Van oh it is all Irene today!
Mon. 2/27/12 12:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi there live-and-in-comments Van!
Falls Church, if I recall an earlier pledge? (It's okay, you need to keep the Van in D__ letters!) ;)
Mon. 2/27/12 12:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@KP: "The Dark Night Life / Ain't the right life / But it's our life"
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:15pm pierre:

Le Combo Fantastique of Irene and Julie !
Bonjour WFMU !
Mon. 2/27/12 12:16pm Van in DC:

Yep, Falls Church! Here at home now...wanted to see the race at noon. So of course it gets delayed until tonight :)
Mon. 2/27/12 12:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour pierre!
Listener fantastique de WFMU!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:17pm Danne D:

Yeah and it's questionable that the race is gonna even happen then :(
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:17pm Cecile:

Hey, Joe, other pledge people.
The State field is hosed up on the pledge form online. Won't let me continue
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:17pm Julie:

Bonjour Pierre!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:17pm KP:

Bonjour Pierre. Where's Uggie?
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:18pm Danne D:

Like Van and most FMU listeners I'm a big NASCAR fan too!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:19pm Danne D:

Really hope Truex can pull it off and make Jersey proud whenever they get the race going :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:19pm Caryn:

I think every conceivable joke has already been made about Julie, so I won't bother.

@KP: hey, as the song says, "I love the Dark Night. I love to boogie." Oh wait...
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:20pm KP:

Dark Night of the Moon.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:20pm Danne D:

I forgot that you roll like that with your minions in tow, Julie :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:20pm Looms:

Ready for duty!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:21pm 12539:

Fabio should drop in. Clay Pigeon would get so adorably insecure.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:23pm pierre:

Uggie ?

by the way, how can somebody add a comment to the pledge during a live show?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:23pm Van in DC:

Why, through twitter of course ;)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:23pm KP:

The dog in the Artist. Bad joke.

  Mon. 2/27/12 12:24pm Danne D:

@12539 :) Congrats on the adopting of Bethany, btw :)

@pierre - the comment box is on the right side of the on-line pledge form
Mon. 2/27/12 12:24pm Van in DC:

lol @Doug - hi Doug!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:25pm Danne D:

LOL Doug S :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:25pm pierre:

Oups sorry KP, well he's still hungover from last night i guess :)

@ Danne D : you're a chef, merci !
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:26pm joe:

took a pledge from a woman the other day who didn't know which station she was pledging to. she just knew she had listened before and liked the station.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:27pm Van in DC:

That was a really great live performance & interview on Jeffrey's show by Sharon by the way.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:27pm KP:

On Saturday night, Irene mixed the WQXR broadcast of the Berlin Philharmonic.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:28pm Caryn:

I think Clay lives his life in a perpetual state of adorable insecurity.

I feel sad about Uggie. He has a mysterious deteriorative disease that is probably killing him.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Sharon van Etten--that was a great live set.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:28pm Robert:

Where that song says "shimmer like a river in summer", I was thinking "shiver like a river in winter".
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:30pm Danne D:

@pierre I've never considered myself much of a chef :) Outside of a nice bacon sandwich on the foreman grill maybe :)

Btw, note to self - #28
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:31pm Cecile:

pierre, just write in on the special note part.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:32pm Cecile:

Uggie also got a Palm Dog Award from Cannes for the best animal performance
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:32pm Julie:

@Pierre don't write in French and humiliate me ;)
Mon. 2/27/12 12:37pm Van in DC:

So Julie, does WFMU have a cot for you to crash on until your show tonight/tomorrow morning? :)
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:37pm Julie:

@Van um yes if I want to wear a hazmat suit. :)
Mon. 2/27/12 12:38pm Van in DC:

Didn't Irene engineer this very group for Dark Night of the Soul not long ago?
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:38pm Julie:

yep!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:40pm pierre:

@ Danne D : "nice bacon sandwich" sounds like a great thing to me right now ! Only a true chef would use that exemple ;)

@ Cecile : thx, i can't right now, but i'll pledge tonight (in France) and some more during the week. :)

@ Julie : i've heard your french, it's good, don't feel humiliated. It was just my small attempt to push the idea that as WFMU is an international radio, every's concerned about the WFMUTHON2012 !
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:40pm Caryn:

@Cecile: he also won the Golden Collar for ''Best Dog in A Theatrical Film''
Mon. 2/27/12 12:40pm Van in DC:

Sharon is starting to get a little big now...she had her TV debut about 1.5 months ago on the Fallon show
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:42pm Danne D:

Is that Cannes or Canines?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:42pm steven, down on the farm:

Hey gals! Saw that Sharon was opening for Shearwater, anyone catch them? They must have come through-
I pledges w/ Jonesy & XRay yesterday!!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:43pm Danne D:

LOL Pierre :) Extra crispy
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:45pm Cecile:

Cannes, Danne!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:46pm Danne D:

I would think that the Canines Festival would be a more prestigious award for a dog though :D
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:46pm derp derp:

(just curious how the Best Show got such an insanely high number of pledges, compared to other shows.. does Tom have a much larger fan base than other shows, or does he have more celebrity/well off friends donating to his show? or both? It's not in my time zone so I don't get a chance to hear many of his shows...)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:47pm Danne D:

Julie appealing to the anti-social crowd with that pitch for web pledges :) "you don't have to talk to anybody"
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:48pm Cecile:

All of the above, and Scharpling is a ridiculously good networker as well. Scharpling and Wurster are Twitter monsters - their feeds are funny even if you don't listen to the shows.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:49pm Cecile:

Danne, I think a palm d'or made out of pigskin would be the most prestigious award for a dog. Or bacon.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:49pm c2677:

@derp don't try to understand the best show
Mon. 2/27/12 12:50pm Van in DC:

And even older stuff is getting archived now...like Steinski! Thanks Doug! :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:50pm Wilson:

There's a mouse in my office. Maybe it's the mouse of today!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:53pm Caryn:

@Wilson: can you see if it's wearing a tiny WFMU t-shirt?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:54pm steven, down on the farm:

Mice of the day prefer beef jerky as bait
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:54pm Danne D:

@Cecile 100% agree - plus, Tom got deep roots in the station as he's been on the station for so long - so he has both a strong FMU audience as well as a strong external audience. It's built momentum over the years and he really has been tireless in advocating for the station. And he's really a good guy.

Wilson - I think that's a strong hint.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:54pm glenn:

julie's trying to bring in the true blood pledges.
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 12:54pm Doug S.:

  Mon. 2/27/12 12:55pm Danne D:

@Cecile Mmmmm bacon
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:55pm Danne D:

yay wilfried :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:56pm Danne D:

yay phil and wendy :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:57pm Wilson:

He's squeaky and sneaky. Anyway I blew my pledge wad last week but for all those who haven't pledged yet GET BUSY!!! KEEP WFMU WEIRD!!!
Mon. 2/27/12 12:58pm Van in DC:

This was another wonderful live set from before.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:58pm Caryn:

The first time I listened and pledged during a WFMU marathon, it was because a person I was a fan of was on Scharpling's show, so I can testify first-hand that many new people donate to that show, because someone they follow on Twitter or FB or wherever tell them to check the show out. Hopefully, many of those people will stick around and become regular listeners and pledgers like me. Never listen to Scharpling nowadays, because it's on at 4 a.m. my time. I'm seldom up then.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:58pm Danne D:

Thanks for your generosity Wilson :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:01pm KP:

"you don't have to talk to anybody" ha ha ha.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:02pm pierre:

@ Caryn : i never listen to it either; i discover WFMU with Ken, Rex, and Scott(s)… and then it was (most of the time) 24h/7d
Mon. 2/27/12 1:02pm steven, down on the farm:

@ Caryn- I depend on the archives- so happy , so thick an rife with them...
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 1:05pm Julie:

wfmu is thick with archives. Gooey with archives. Help support them :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:05pm Caryn:

Funny, I first read the playlist as "Jools Holland &..." Had to read it again and go "aha".
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 1:09pm Julie:

over an hour in and only 1/4 way there! Y'all can do better right? $75 or more gets you in the running for the Miles Davis box set and you get Irene's great premium!
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:11pm Ric:

As I've said before, the Archives are half the joy of FMU! I certainly donate to support them; live streaming and maintenance too!

Mon. 2/27/12 1:23pm Van in DC:

Think of what a photo op that would be, to be in the FMU library!
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:23pm BSI:

they're ALL scratch & sniff.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:24pm KP:

Photos verboten in library.

Am I still in the running? I want the Glen Jones.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:25pm (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

The Wanting is just an amazing album. he who get the album won a friend for a lifetime.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:26pm KP:

  Mon. 2/27/12 1:27pm noeems:

Irene, it's always so nice and soothing to listen to your show after work on mondays (it's 7.30 pm for me here). Thanks ever so much!

  Mon. 2/27/12 1:28pm KP:

Cecile, you will have to fight me for the Glenn Jones.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:29pm KP:

You need a copy editor. I know one.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:30pm (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

@van - Hi
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:31pm Cecile:

would that copy editor be named KP? ;)
Mon. 2/27/12 1:31pm Van in DC:

I humbly beg for more people to pony up a pledge and support my treasured adopted Irene. :)

Hi Yair!
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 1:31pm Irene:

I also know a copy editor. He is my husband Peter Keepnews. He has to keep a close watch on my typos.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:32pm KP:

Great article on Peter yesterday. Nice to know there are hard working, conscientious people in the business. Of course they are not in sports.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:32pm KP:

Si. I mean oui.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:34pm Cecile:

well, Irene, I made few typos until autofill came around. Now I have to disable it right away or it's just weird.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:35pm BSI:

Married to a copy editor: you too? Solidarity!
Being a graphic designer, it's kind of like covering both hemispheres of the brain in one household. An un-natural kind of stability.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:35pm Cecile:

Even to Pledge is to Fail.
And thanks to Fabio, everyone wants to fail.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:35pm Van in DC:

If you pledge, then Even to Fail (to win prize) is to Win (by helping keep WFMU on the air)
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:36pm Cecile:

do you have any Claire and the Reasons?

BSI - ha! I think I'm going back to school for graphic design...
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:37pm Cecile:

I bought and named a comment board.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@Van Couldn't have said it better myself! (Actually I was planning on typing that similar message...)

@Julie I think the $180 level is referred to as a "Half Mouse"--at least that's what some have called it on the Air. It may not have a proper name (Half Mouse is good, or maybe "Half Circle")
Mon. 2/27/12 1:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Pearl Harbor is just a section of greater Honolulu, island of Oahu.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:38pm Cecile:

It's a heavy place.
The memorial is so quiet. I'm not a spiritual person, but you feel something old and deep in your brain around there.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:40pm Cecile:

But we only visited the memorial
Mon. 2/27/12 1:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Send your cosmic hugs (and dough!) to Irene!

@Cecile: I've never been, I heard the memorial is very heavy. A bay, much of which is a designated War Grave. Comments boards are great though--which board did you adopt?
Mon. 2/27/12 1:43pm Van in DC:

Might the hauntingly beautiful vocal chords of Liz Fraser be possibly played today?
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:44pm Cecile:

I saw him once. It wasn't great because he had double pnuemonia. It was the '82 tour. I was bummed. I heard later dates were just electrifying.

Yep, Peter, he did do that at the show we saw. We were new jazz fans and were all "what the hell?"

I adopted Jason Sigal's talk is cheap board. It's called Free Speech.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:45pm KP:

Julie is adopted.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:45pm Mike East:

Just got word that I have successfully adopted the hexagonal trash bin!!!! (Does this mean it my responsibility to empty it now?)
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:45pm Caryn:

I believe the $180 pledge is called the "Global Domination" pledge, due to the name of the tote you get then. I mean Verboten Toten.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:47pm Van in DC:

Actually the music today has put me in the mood more for something like Newgrange from Clannad
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 1:48pm Irene:

Well, Mike, I wouldn't hold you to it. But that bin does get pretty full from time to time. I've emptied the trash around studio B a fair bit myself. It's all part of the general upkeep of WFMU.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:48pm KP:

Cecile, who did you see in '82. "Peter' does not seem to be on the board.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:48pm Caryn:

Ooh, some Clannad would be good...
Mon. 2/27/12 1:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Is there a recycle bin to adopt? Gotta recycle what we can!
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:49pm KP:

First wrong math question day. Not my field.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:49pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I want my news reports fair and balanced. I want my music totally whacked, WFMU-style. I'll be pledging later this week. Is there a neon WFMU sign somewhere that folks could adopt?
Mon. 2/27/12 1:50pm Van in DC:

@Ken - there might be a neon "ON AIR" somewhere... :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:51pm Mike East:

Well I'll be there on Saturday - so I will make sure to do my part.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:53pm KP:

March is almost here. Nightnoise. Bothy Band.
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:53pm Caryn:

@Ken: I seem to remember a neon-lit item or two on the adoption page...
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:53pm Danne D:

While Julie has been adopted, I believe her comments board has yet to be claimed
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:57pm KP:

Dd. That picture is priceless. Maybe if it still available this Dark Night.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Julie's is one of my fav comment boards, yet I use all my pledge for swag (there's just TOO MUCH GREAT STUFF!) and Yo La Tengo song. If I was richer I'd pledge for all the swag I want, AND adopt a crapload of stuff as well!
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:58pm KP:

I think the adoption is "free" alongside the swag, no?
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:59pm c2677:

i missed the last DJ break... how do we find out if we won a prize if we miss the announcement live?
  Mon. 2/27/12 1:59pm Danne D:

You get swag with adoption - adoption is just a bonus inducement for pre-paid pledges. For example I did a prize account for $x and pre-paid it and also adopted the wonderful Amanda Nazario :)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:00pm Matt from Springfield:

@KP: T-shirts, bumper stickers and other accesories are given along with premiums, depending on how much you give--but I think adoptions are another separate thing to pledge for.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:00pm G:

@Matt: I sponsored Monica's board for this year. I'm usually not up between 3 and 6 AM here in the eastern US timezone, or if I am I am not online :-), so I rarely see Julie's board live. Often I see it dead, the next day. :-)

@KP: If you hit 180 for the year, the adoption comes with the other premiums.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:01pm KP:

Ask Julie, she's adopted.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:01pm Danne D:

Help WFMU with a paid pledge of $180 or more and earn naming rights to a fixture, or donate $365 to adopt a DJ at the WFMU Magic Factory. Every marathon adoption comes with naming rights for the fixture in question, and an adorable little plaque affixed to it with your name on it.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:01pm Matt from Springfield:

"Here And Now" is a great album! I bought it after they were on Irwin's show. North Carolinians, with other great NCians in the session credits. The guys from Roman Candle, as well as a *certain* drummer from Superchunk you hear here all the time...:)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:02pm Van in DC:

How about Kenzo? Can someone adopt Kenzo? 'Cause someone probably should adopt Kenzo. Just sayin' :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:03pm Danne D:

If you would like to adopt a DJ or a Fixture, and have naming rights to him, her, or it for the next 12 months, please make a paid-in-full pledge to WFMU's 2012 Marathon by 11:59pm on March 4th, 2012, and then send an email via this page to stake your claim. Make sure that you specify in the email which DJ or Fixture you would like!

First come, first served!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:03pm 12539:

Matt, if you've already paid, you should grab Julie's board.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:03pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne,G: Okay thanks, great to know! I often pre-pay my pledge before the Marathon, so I'll remember that for next time. (This year I'm trying out pledging a bit to all the shows I like, sending in a lump sum at the end.)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Muy bueno! Gracias, Jenny de los Empañadas! :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:04pm Danne D:

@Van - I think being able to adopt Kenzo is a capital idea. I would e-mail the adoption powers that be about adding him and/or Kenzo himself as I believe he'd have to be willing to be adopted as it were :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:05pm Cecile:

Irene, play Julie some Paul Metzger...
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:05pm KP:

Modal. Was he the guy from Philly?
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:05pm Danne D:

@Matt yup there you go. I don't know how it works if mid-stream you decided to pay for the pledges you've already made. Probably a Joe McGasko question. That probably gets complicated.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:06pm G:

Email Joe McG and ask if you are not sure you can still adopt based on your paid total. Or, roll the dice and find something to adopt that your annual paid pledge adds up to, and email him asking to name/adopt that. The link to the adoption gallery is on the home page.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:06pm Danne D:

Adoptable or know, getting thank you notes brighten Kenzo's day :) And you can always honor him in the comments section of your pledge.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, I didn't know you were on with Debbie D, Julie! I actually threw in an unscheduled pledge to Ichiban when I noticed Ted Barron had a show there -- I didn't realize they were putting original shows on that stream, I was happy to help. Support the scrappy underdogs! :)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:12pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Amanda is great, I'm dropping her (and Doug's stream!) a pledge this Wed--unfortunately I can't listen to GTDR at work, stupid network policies! But maybe they can start a Flash stream...if people pledge enough to GTDR, maybe? ;)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:13pm Van in DC:

ha ha @Matt - I dropped in to that Ichiban stream for the first time ever when Julie was on and saw your pledge. I figured you, like me, had checked it out because Julie was on it :). And yep, GTDS!
Mon. 2/27/12 2:15pm Van in DC:

By "saw your pledge" I mean I heard Julie announce it on the stream :)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:16pm Matt from Springfield:

A new dawn of online shows on WFMU, now is a great time to listen! To comment! To pledge! To bask in the resulting love of FMU!

@Van: Aww, I thought you could *see* sound! :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:17pm Roberto:

Holy crap, that version of W.A.R. was niiiiice
Mon. 2/27/12 2:19pm Van in DC:

Okay, I sent an email to John Dalton, the FMU Adoption Guru regarding Kenzo :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:19pm KP:

Van. i just happened to have tuned into that stream out of boredom, first time ever on a separate stream, and heard julie cackling. That was worth a pledge.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:19pm Danne D:

@Matt - while you can't get pop-up player GTDR live, you can use it when listening to the archived shows :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:20pm Caryn:

Gotta admit, I was singing along to "Walk Away Renee"...
Mon. 2/27/12 2:20pm Matt from Springfield:

All the Vampires out there, wake up! Draw the shades, call or pledge online before going back to bed!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:21pm Danne D:

(noticing that Julie is the gateway drug of choice for some folks into the main lines of WFMU) *legend*
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 2:21pm Julie:

We accept checks written in blood!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:22pm KP:

Danne D. i have no idea wha you are talking about.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:22pm KP:

Only after 3 am.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:22pm Van in DC:

@Danne D - that is so funny. First show I ever listened to on WFMU was Dark Night of the Soul, and I had to wake up in the middle of the night to do it!
Mon. 2/27/12 2:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Yes, I thought about commenting before while listen to the PREVIOUS week's show, but thought that was too confusing! (I tried that before actually, when PLS streams were first blocked at work) :) So I listen to the Archives when I can.

Irwin has long been a "gateway drug" at FMU, but Julie has rapidly caught up in new listeners who say they found this through her.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:23pm Danne D:

@kp - it seems that some folks are tuning into the shifts Julie is emceeing and discovering more FMU awesomeness :)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:25pm KP:

At hat hour, i think she brings in the Euros, and their euros.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:26pm KP:

She is the guest hostess with with the mostest.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:27pm KP:

Stan is awesome!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:28pm Danne D:

Chris T was my initial gateway.
I think the Hound was the next show I heard.
Then SSD semi-accidentally as I thought it was Chris T's show (not realizing the whole 1-day-a-week show thing here).
Then probably Wild Girl and Trash Twang and Thunder and Radio Active Theater which almost nobody seems to remember.
Probably heard Terre's show a couple times around then too but not regularly tuned in.
Won $25 that was put in Western Union on a SSD episode (which sadly hasn't been reaired/refound) and that sorta got me feeling I needed to pledge something ($10 at the next marathon).
Started volunteering - actually first met Terre and had a cool convo with her and she was NOT on the schedule at the time - only later would hear and realize how great her show was when she was back on the schedule. And the rest kinda was history from there.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@KP: That was an awesome initiation into the Ichiban stream--I would pledge out of ecstasy too!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:29pm KP:

Yes i was on train with my iphone. It was hilarious.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:29pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: "Legend of a Mind"...Meredith Ochs, Trash Twang and Thunder! I saw old playlists for that, shame it's not on anymore (or even Toothpick Rhythm!)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:30pm woj:

radio active theatre was the improv radio comedy thing, right, danne d?
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 2:31pm Doug S.:

If I may speak for Amanda and the entire Drummer stream team: T H A N K S!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:31pm KP:

Meredith and Laura used to be on back to back on Saturdays.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:32pm Ken:

Wow - RadioActive Theater - that takes me back!
Mon. 2/27/12 2:32pm Van in DC:

I have to help out my adopted DJ! Next person to make that "half mouse" $180 pledge - I will match it with $185, and beg Joe to have the amount credited to YOU to get you to a full-Mouse pledge!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:32pm Danne D:

@woj yes indeed - they would have callers call in to play roles in skits
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:33pm Danne D:

Would love to hear old eps of that - whether the given show's premise worked or not. I'm pretty sure hearing that lead me to listen to Meredith as I think they were on the same night.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:34pm Bas, NL:

;D hApPy DaNcE!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:34pm KP:

Sandy Denny! I'm in. Or i will be in a second.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Wow, you thanked me so fast it traveled back in time! :)
Just for that I'll pledge for Amanda tonight, ahead of time! Keep up your most noble Empire from Studio P, Doug!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:35pm Danne D:

Bas :D
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:35pm Bas, NL:

Danne D!! Hi!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:35pm Danne D:

(side note blew $21 of the $25 at the Meadowlands Racetrack that night - held back $4 per Andy's recommendation)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:36pm woj:

thought so! we called in once and gave them some seeds for an improv. i don't remember what they came up with but some of the things they came up with still are part of our lexicon to this day -- in particular, the chanting of "dead air dead air dead air dead air" to the tune of the mission impossible theme song.
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 2:37pm Julie:

Trash Twang and Thunder! Meredith!
Mon. 2/27/12 2:38pm Matt from Springfield:

"Irene and Julie speak!"
Matt and the listeners swooooon! :D

Has WFMU thought about a 900-number to raise money? Press 1 to hear Julie talk about something for example, press 2 for Clay, 3 for Jonesie, etc...We got some great voices here! :)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:38pm Van in DC:

I so treasure my Sandy Denny boxed set!

Using the insanely great web-pledging apparatus, anyone can pledge for any show at any time. Speaking of which. Go Irene go!
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 2:40pm Julie:

@Van me too..Sandy is a revelation, as is Irene
Mon. 2/27/12 2:40pm Van in DC:

If ya'll want to announce on air my offer, that's fine with me, if that will get someone to call in :)
Mon. 2/27/12 2:42pm Matt from Springfield:

Sandy singing "She Moves Through The Fair"...blissful.

Thank you also Irene, for playing the ORIGINAL single of Judy Collins "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" some years ago. I wanted to hear how that sounded last year, and was pleased to find it quickly on one of your Archives!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:42pm KP:

Damn firefox choked on my pledge. i think it's in though.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:43pm Matt from Springfield:

And incidentally I now like the original, simpler, non-Stills single better.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:43pm Van in DC:

I've forgotten now what that "+ 10:1" stood for...
Mon. 2/27/12 2:44pm Van in DC:

Was it literally "Tinariwen"?
Avatar    Mon. 2/27/12 2:46pm Julie:

15 minutes, 25% to go, come on people give Irene some lovvvvvvvve
Mon. 2/27/12 2:49pm Van in DC:

Even local classical station WETA had "call now and have your pledge matched" periods during their pledging week recently. These were matches done by another listener who had already done their part.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:50pm Danne D:

@KP - Firefox has been a little weird with my pledges too. But I've been getting the E-mail receipt and that's what I've been using as my guidepost to whether the pledge went through.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:51pm KP:

julie, could you tell me if my pledge is in. i was not able to fulfill it due to FF fail but the pldege should be in.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:52pm KP:

Yes but tha takes a while.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:52pm Danne D:

did you get an e-mail, KP? check your last pledge mail and see if you comments line-up (or the fact that it was pledged to Irene)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:53pm Andrew:

Van: Yes, +10:1 is Tinariwen in their language. The "alphabet" is missing the vowels, so +10:1 is TNRWN. Most of the letters do not look like familiar symbols as these do.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Pledgin' the schej! That's what I'm talkin'bout!
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:54pm KP:

Mon. 2/27/12 2:55pm Van in DC:

It was:

Andrew:

Since you commented.
+10:1 is tinariwen written in the Tamazight abjad. Abjad means an alphabet without vowels. So + is t, 1 is n, 0 is r, and : is w. By a coincidence all the letters of their name look sort of like familiar symbols to us, but the 0 on my t-shirt with the camel on the guitar neck is very round, a little wider than it is tall.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:55pm Caryn:

Anyone going along with your offer yet, Van?
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:55pm KP:
