Listener comments!

Mon. 2/27/12 11:57am listener james from westwood:

good monday to all!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:01pm Brett g Porter:

Hey to all my imaginary internet friends.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:02pm Jeff G:

Helloooo, gents! Great to have you here, as always! And away we go.
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:03pm Brett g Porter:

Your theme song is as catchy as "WKRP in Cincinnati"
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:04pm Jeff G:

...if not quite as ear-wormy.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

the in-theme has the feel of an entire combo running musically into the room and taking their seats for class to begin. and what a class!
Mon. 2/27/12 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

i wish someone had told me earlier i was imaginary. i wouldn't have sent in my rent! you can't charge a figment!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:07pm Doug S.:

@Brett g Porter
Imaginary? Imaginary! Why, I was just talking myself the other day and I answered clear as a bell. How is that imaginary?!
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:16pm Brett g Porter:

Ooops. Sorry, lads; must be me, then. Just a construct coded up in a few hundred lines of poorly thought out C++ code. What's the opposite of solipsism, where you believe that everything exists except yourself?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:17pm Brian en Angleterre:

Bonjour Jeffes'. Well are we going down the existential line here. I for one believe everything and nothing. That way I am not disappointed.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:18pm EVERYTHING:

@Brett
We really do need to talk.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:18pm Jeff G:

Can we go back to talking about what everyone is wearing soon? This is getting a little heady for us...
Mon. 2/27/12 12:19pm Brian en Angleterre:

James, I was reading Poe recently if you remember now this appears.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486192/
Mon. 2/27/12 12:22pm Brian en Angleterre:

Jeff G Doug never wears anything when he DJs how about you?
Mon. 2/27/12 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

Oh dear gods. It looks like the Downey "Sherlock"s with the poster from "The Crow."
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:24pm Jeff G:

I'm wearing sweatshirt and jeans. Jewelry by Brooklyn's Clay Pot.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

"Wall this one up in the wine cellar!" —Roger Ebert
"Quoth the viewer, 'Nevermore!'" —Joe Morgenstern
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:25pm Artie:

Miracle Soap, will it wash off even imaginary shame?
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:27pm Jeff G:

Yes, Artie. But like a lot of things, it only works if you pay for it.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:27pm Doug S.:

I used to live across the street from Brooklyn's Clay Pot.

@Brian en Angleterre
You promised you wouldn't tell!

@Artie
The soap will wash the shame of Breg g Porter's imaginary friends.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:27pm Brian en Angleterre:

I'll still with Lord Buckley's version of The Raven.
James, just got Richard Yates out of the library, he is new to me, how is he thought of? Excuse clumsy wording.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:29pm Brian en Angleterre:

Ter re jay Reep dahl
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:29pm Doug S.:

Hugo in Norway would say TARE-zhay.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:29pm Jeff G:

Yates the author?
Or Yates the book? www.amazon.com...
Mon. 2/27/12 12:32pm listener james from westwood:

Richard Yates I don't have a real sense of. Is he also horror along the lines of Poe?
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:33pm Jeff G:

Yates writes compelling if grim social realism. Sort of like a grittier Mad Men, or an even more depressive Cheever.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:34pm Doug S.:

Overall, WFMU is only $32,000 from being 50% of the way to meeting its goal. It would be lovely to achieve the benchmark during today's broadcast. If you're waiting for a good time to pledge, now would be A VERY GOOD time. If we get a pledge for 32K, i will do the rest of my 2012 shows in the buff. For a pledge of 33K, I will turn off the web cam!
Mon. 2/27/12 12:35pm Brian en Angleterre:

These are short stories, Jeff seems to have summed it up.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:37pm Jeff G:

He's a good time.

But(t) back to Doug's topic: BIG OL' THANKS TO MICHAEL IN ATHENS, GA, FOR A LOVELY EARLY AFTERNOON PLEDGE!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:40pm Jeff G:

(Actually, looks like Michael hit the pledge button earlier this morning! Thanks again, Michael.)
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:41pm Jeff G:

Kinda love the original cover of this album: 4.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:44pm Dervish:

Is the "Karin" in the title referring to Karin Krog?
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:49pm Jeff G:

A good guess, though we have no real knowledge of this...
  Mon. 2/27/12 12:49pm Artie:

Doug, please keep the web cam on. Smear a little Miracle Soap on the lens and try to remain seated.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:50pm listener james from westwood:

Then Richard Yates's work sounds like my type of writing. Thanks for the tip!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:53pm Doug S.:

To all commenters and readers, D:O RADIO is at a disadvantage being pre-recorded. It's very difficult to entice and solicit your pledges and support without being able to converse in real time — and without having prizes to offer as an incentive. Please reward this brilliant show with a pledge of any amount to WFMU via the link atop this page.

Today's D:O RADIO is its last of the marathon, so this is your last chance to say THANK YOU for the great music.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 12:54pm Jeff G:

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIAL.
Mon. 2/27/12 12:58pm Brian en Angleterre:

James; the book is called 'Eleven Kinds of Loneliness' that's what got my attention. Sounded like an Eric Mathews record.
PS just dropped a small pledge to keep things ticking over.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:02pm Doug S.:

@Jeff
Thanks goodness, the Daytona 500 has been delayed until 7pm. The first postponement initially pushed it back to noon today. (I would have hated inconveniencing all those race fans.)
Mon. 2/27/12 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

i think mittens romney was in attendance yesterday. sad to see his day get rained on. he likes cars. he likes trees. he likes lamp.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:04pm Jeff G:

@Doug: Indeed. (500 what, again?)

@Brian: Mercy buckets!! (I think that's where the FMU bean counters put the pledges.)
Mon. 2/27/12 1:06pm Brian en Angleterre:

IL PARLE FRANCAIS. L'argent est l'ami de Romney, n'est pas.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:08pm Jeff G:

Mais oui. Aussi les Cadillacs. Et les arbres de Michigan.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:16pm Jeff G:

My wife just reminded me that one of the stories in that Richard Yates collection is called "A Pretty Good Jazz Piano." Was that the actual draw, Brian?
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:18pm Doug S.:

@Jeff
I am going to go scramble and egg for my home-sick-from-school daughter. Don't play anything good until I get back...
Mon. 2/27/12 1:22pm Brian en Angleterre:

More like 'A Wrestler with Sharks' or 'A Glutton for Punishment' No offence.
Your title has got me thinking of Bill Evans with his snout about two inches from the keys when I saw him.
Mon. 2/27/12 1:25pm Brian en Angleterre:

Hey Jeff can you put up Kenny G on the playlist for when Doug gets back.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:28pm Jeff G:

Hahhahahahahah. Though I suspect he listens before he sees?
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:32pm Doug S.:

Speaking of which, has anyone here NOT read Pat Metheny's brilliant evisceration of Kenny G? I've never been a big Metheny fan, but this changed everything:

spitballarmy.com...
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:33pm Jeff G:

Shhhh! He's back!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:38pm Doug S.:

By the way, Jeff, did you know my mother's name is "Rima." In honor of my mother, can we get just one full MOUSE OF TODAY pledge? It will shoot us past the goal for this slot and make a ton of people (not including my mother) unbelievably happy.

If you pledge a full mouse, I will make your pledge eligible for prizes on my marathon show tomorrow night. To see those prizes, go here: bit.ly...
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:40pm Jeff G:

Did not know!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 1:41pm Jeff G:

Coincidentally, my mom's name is "Cantaloupe Island."
Mon. 2/27/12 2:02pm listener james from westwood:

must nick out to the bank for a moment. if i spot any spare bundles of $100s, i will post them immediately to jersey city.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:12pm Doug S.:

OK, Jeff, take this shit off, and by shit, I mean outrageously fantastic music. Listeners are too dumbstruck to reach for their mouses and pledge.

Dear friends,
We simply must meet our goal for this air slot. Give the Drummer Radio is a wild and wonderful innovation by WFMU, but it exists entirely due to listener support during past marathons. Your support during this marathon will ensure its existence. We are just under $300 from hitting the modest goal for this program. Please chip in and do your part.

When you make your pledge now, you do NOT have to pay it now. Click the option to receive a pledge notice later and you can pay the pledge when you are ready. We are asking for your help.

Support your local wigged-out mass-media free-jazz dispenser!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:18pm Doug S.:

Support radio programs that play 25-minute long tracks in the middle of a fundraiser. No really, it is just this kind of adventuresome, unconventional approach to sharing music creatively that makes Destination Out, Give the Drummer Radio and WFMU worthy of your financial contributions.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:20pm Jeff G:

(Plus, a man's gotta eat.)
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:23pm Artie:

Know this: I love this show. This is the Jazz I always hope to hear on the radio. More Power. To You.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:23pm Doug S.:

I don't think it's been mentioned that BRIAN IN WATFORD, UK has made a pledge. Brian shares this intimate note with Destination Out:

"You are a breath of fresh air which is unfortunate in this current climate when it should be small club & smoky! Thanks for heppin' me to Miles' Get Up With It before Christmas."
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:34pm Doug S.:

Please ignore the sounds of telephones ringing in the background of this marvelous George Russell number. All pledges must be webbed in using the box on this page. Please make a pledge of any amount right now.

We have been holding steady at 40% for way too long. Move that pledge thermometer over a just a scoonch and you'll be doing a wonderful thing.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:38pm Jeff G:

Do it for the children!

The sick children eating Doug's scrambled eggs, especially.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:44pm Artie:

I just saw Randy Weston perform. He's fine!!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:46pm Jeff G:

Phewf! Was pretty sure, but glad for the confirmation, Artie!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:47pm Doug S.:

For all those too depressed to pledge over Sean Young arrest after trying to crash an Oscar after-party, get over it. She posted $20,000 bail. The least you can do is pledge twenty bucks.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:49pm Brian en Angleterre:

Artie I'm with you on the jazz, just hold fire on the soap and Doug's vertical status.
I can rustle you up some eggs form the Irma Thomas memorial chicken coop. The girls are still talking 'bout her visit.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:50pm Doug S.:

For all those too depressed to pledge over the arrest of Lucy "Xena, Warrior Princess" Lawless's arrest, with Greenpeace activists on an oil-drilling ship off New Zealand, get over it. What good would a clean environment be without WFMU? Think about it people!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:54pm Jeff G:

::: starts resignedly queuing up 3-hr "St. Thomas" for next show :::
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:55pm Doug S.:

I think your erudite listeners took that as a promise and not a threat.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:55pm Brian en Angleterre:

Just realised what is the goal of this show. 20 people could have their cuticles pushed backed to reach the target. I know it seems like 3AM but that is no excuse not to pledge.
  Mon. 2/27/12 2:56pm Brett g Porter:

Speaking of pledges, any idea when t-shirts get mailed? My wife is very upset that I don't own enough t-shirts, and I'm counting on WFMU to save my marriage, here.
Mon. 2/27/12 2:57pm Brian en Angleterre:

12th of Never, Brett. UNLESS.........
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 2:59pm Jeff G:

@Doug: they should know better.
Mon. 2/27/12 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

thanks for the fine show, gents. keep pledging, all!
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 3:00pm Doug S.:

@Brett
WFMU swag usually gets mailed in June-ish.
  Mon. 2/27/12 3:01pm Brett g Porter:

Excellent -- thanks.
Avatar Mon. 2/27/12 3:01pm Jeff G:

Thanks one and all! (Though especially the noisy ones.)
See you all here and there!
Mon. 3/5/12 12:48pm Van in DC:

Looks like it is this show re-airing today. Tuning in for a listen! Usually listening to Irene during this time, but she's out this week too. Must be post-marathon time to catch breath for everyone :)

And congratulations to WFMU on doing so well on the goal this year!!
Mon. 3/5/12 1:59pm Van in DC:

Wait. Xena got arrested?!
Mon. 3/5/12 2:07pm Van in DC:

Really liking the show. Just what I really need - to discover yet another FMU show that I really like.

Sigh.

On another note, I'm really liking "The Lost Man". It has plenty of cowbell.
Avatar Mon. 3/5/12 2:16pm Jeff G:

Hey, Van! Glad you are enjoying it, though sorry to add to your listening load. Hope you can come back again...!
Mon. 3/5/12 2:36pm Van in DC:

Oh, I am more than happy to have my listening load increased :)

Thank you for a great show!
