A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  Tue. 2/14/12 10:01am Cecile:

no problem!
there is a funny story about their founding - a couple of people decided to form an orchestra in Wellington, and they just picked a random instrument for everyone to play. They said whoever was in their favorite coffeehouse that day could join. So that day was packed, and they all got a ukelele and the rest is history.

Looks like some serious posts going on up there - sorry I am not serious yet today!! And sorry if you hate valentines day. Maybe I like it better this year because I am single and have a date with a bunch of girls tonight!! I am going to watch that Whitney and Serge video right now - I don't think I ever actually watched it though I've heard about it. XOAngela!!

@dc pat [10:41]: We dislike the crass commercialism and phoniness, too -- same with Christmas -- but I'm sorry to hear you and your wife "HATE Valentine's Day..." Make it your own and in your own way, but love is all good. :)

Our personal Valentine's Day playlist tonight may include such in the mood music as Take Me to the River, Shipbuilding, Harlem Nocturne, Lay, Lady, Lay and I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl.

I've got the KCRW thing on the 2-CD set version of her album. It's all good.

  Tue. 2/14/12 11:02am Mike East:

We just watched Dolphin Tale with Kris Kristofferson last week.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:04am jt:

That last song gave me a hankering for Sanford Clark singing "Wind Will Blow"
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:05am Cecile:

Someone told me "well you should celebrate love every day."
I said well, I eat everyday, but there's nothing wrong with celebrating Thanksgiving.

This is truly low budget. i'm making dinner from what I already had in the fridge, I made my husband's card and we're staying in watching TV. Valentine's Day out is too nuts for us.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:06am kat330:

@Cecile: Same here, we always make our own cards for each other. If I don't cook tonight, it's only because I cook about every other night of the year.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:07am dc pat:

Yeah, I don't really hate it I guess, just don't do it.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:08am Parq:

For my sweetie and me, it's a bottle of bubbly, dinner from the northern Italian restaurant downstairs, and Day 2 of the Westminster Dog Show. And this year, a wirehaired dachshund (we have one) is in the running for Best in Show!
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:08am Cecile:

Ben Chasny is so frickin' talented and so humble about it (at least when I met him) that it's incredible.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:09am kat330:

@dc pat: Well, that's different. We often don't do Christmas either.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:09am Cecile:

OOOOH, Parq! Dog show! i have it TiVod!
You have a wirehair? How are they to take care of? I kind of love bristley terriers and wiener dogs, and wirehairs are a nice combo.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:11am Jennique:

On this Valentines day I'm going to a new fancy pants Italian restaurant with mio amore. Would lovelovelove to go to the Westminster show. Has a Boston terrier ever won?
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:12am Parq:

'Cile, we had a longhair years ago. Wirehairs, being historically part terrier, are more stubborn and volatile, but intensely loyal and quite lovable.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:14am Cecile:

I don't know Jennique, but Bostons are adorable.

Parq, are they good about being left? We both work - we would make sure it would get walked and plenty of love, but are they the kind of dog that gets neurotic being left for 8-9 hours alone?
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:14am Cecile:

Hortense Ellis really sounds like Carole King.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:14am kat330:

anybody out there like white chocolate?
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:25am Priscilla:

Scharffen Berger has tents at 14th Street & 9th Avenue today, and they are giving out free chocolate. I think they are owned by Hershey.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:26am kat330:

@trouble: Right, you have a lot of choices in your area. I never cared for chocolate as a kid -- the milk kind only available -- but when they finally packaged dark chocolate, I now properly love the stuff.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:26am Mike East:

I can take white chocolate in small doses. My daughter got me a hershey bar for valentines day.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:28am Ike:

@Mike, sorry to hear that your daughter apparently hates you :P ;) Seriously though, I'll have to try Mast Bros. I love Lake Champlain chocolates from Vermont.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:28am Parq:

'Cile, mine is pretty good about being left alone, but I think that's from dog to dog. For instance, neither of our dogs bark at noises in the hall if no people are in our apt, but the dog across the hall constantly does so. You sort of have to take a deep breath and have faith.
Miss Trouble, dark chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chunks. Nuff freakin' said.
Tue. 2/14/12 11:29am Adrian in London:

Chuao by Amadei is the BEST chocolate in the world. When you've tasted it, everything else pales by comparison. http://www.amedei.com/jspamedei/index.html
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:29am dc pat:

I guess part of the issue is I'm not big on chocolate. St. Pat's is more my style...although I hate that too.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:29am kat330:

@Mike East: Aww. BTW, we also saw A Dolphin's Tale last week. The real story is great, but the film was a bit too much "After School Special" for us.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:31am Mike East:

@Ike - it puts me on par with the rest of her class - who got the same thing.
@kat330 - The dolphin was a pretty actress, though.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:32am kat330:

@dc pat: How about instead strawberries or raspberries as sweets for the sweet?
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:32am kat330:

I am really enjoying your vintage spins, T.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:33am dc pat:

She was perhaps the best actor.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:34am Parq:

DC Pat, don't get me started. There are few things I like less than the way St Patrick's Day is celebrated in the US -- tacky green plastic novelty items, clownish clothing and watery domestic beer by the vat. Every year, I try to lighten up and be a sport about it, and every year, I end up wishing I had a cream-pie machine gun.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:35am kat330:

Finger-snapping time, yay!
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:37am dc pat:

it's kind of embarrassing, really. Check out Jinx Lennon's Nothing But a Leprechaun (Cecile hepped me to him)
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:39am kat330:

I've never gone out and celebrated St. Pat's w/the masses. Never appealed. In that vein I much prefer Cinco de Mayo.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:41am kat330:

Prokofiev! Romeo & Juliet referencing.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:42am dc pat:

when you're Irish, you sort "have" to do some celebrating. I tried but it's just an amateur puke-fest now.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:42am Mike East:

Cinco de Mayo is a great excuse to have tacos...as if anyone needed one.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:43am kat330:

Well, I'm a considerable part Irish but never felt compelled. Just like the German part never felt compelled to celebrate Oktoberfest. :)
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:44am kat330:

Oh, god, didn't mean to launch another taco discussion.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:44am Cecile:

Legacy Chocolate in Wisconsin (formerly also in St. Paul) and BT McElrath are my favorite chocolates. McElrath does odd flavors like Vosges, but I think he's more suave with his combinations. I still wouldn't be upset if someone gave me some Vosges though.
  Tue. 2/14/12 11:45am AndoidKBot:

St. Patrick's day makes me feel kind of bad for the Irish. There entire culture gets reduced to green obnoxious drunkeness
