  Fri. 2/10/12 1:41am Doug Schulkind:

Fri. 2/10/12 1:45am Brian en Angleterre:

I'm off to work old bean, sleep well; see you later. Pip pip.
  Fri. 2/10/12 1:47am Doug Schulkind:

  Fri. 2/10/12 8:38am glenn:

hey, the toronto transit l.r.t. page links to pittsboig. http://lrt.daxack.ca/
Fri. 2/10/12 8:41am Brian en Angleterre:

The bird provides the soundtrack to your early waking hours and the worm helps ventilate the ground upon which you reside.
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:43am glenn:

look who's awake, and literal, somewhat.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 8:43am Doug Schulkind:

Hi there Glenn. Don't bother with Pittsburgh transit website—it was designed in the 1970s.

Welcome back Brian!
Fri. 2/10/12 8:46am listener james from westwood:

hey, some of my best friends were designed in the 1970s.
morning, doug, and happy friday all! 4-hour tower of power coming up!
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

  Fri. 2/10/12 8:51am dc pat:

YAAaaaaawwwwnnnn....
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:53am glenn:

i would say honey crullers.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

Tell me about, dc pat. I finished working on this puppy at 3:00am. I must really love you.

@glenn
Honey Crullers sounds like a porn actress.
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:56am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:57am glenn:

uhhhhhhhhh. yeah, i guess it kinda does. how about "kremey krisp"?
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:57am ndbob:

it's a toasty -8 with a -30 wind chill
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Hi ndbob! Some steamy sounds to sizzle your gizzard, coming right up.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
Kremey Krisp is her co-star.
  Fri. 2/10/12 8:59am glenn:

that's why god invented windbreakers.
Fri. 2/10/12 9:00am listener james from westwood:

just gotta make a run to the donut pub on 14th st and we'll be sugar-buzzed by the first mike break!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:03am annie:

hard hard frost last night.. everything is crinkly and white out there... good morning all..
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:03am glenn:

wait. maybe al gore invented windbreakers. it's hard to tell them apart sometimes.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Annie! Crinkly is a lovely word.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:05am still b/p:

Did you ever see Honey Crullers in The Dirty Dozen, or Dunk the Bismarck?
Fri. 2/10/12 9:05am Brian en Angleterre:

glenn who is this god you write about? Was it not the haricot bean that started it?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:05am fishmonkeystew:

Good morning, Annie, Doug, and all you fine WFMUers! Cheers!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:05am glenn:

ohhhhhhh. pun alert! pun alert!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:06am annie:

i peered out the window at the ground and could FEEL the crink
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:08am ndbob:

Got my marathon mailing yesterday - your premium CD looks pretty great Doug.
Fri. 2/10/12 9:09am Brian en Angleterre:

Keep my eyes peeled. I'd even rather listen to Pink Floyd.
Fri. 2/10/12 9:09am Brian en Angleterre:

ndbob you'd be mad to get it. You'd be mad not to get it.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Fishmonkeystew, how you be?

@Brian
That haricot bean is what inspired the name for the musical style Zydeco. True!

@ndbob
It's a 2-CD set! A sort of Volume 2 to my original premium Loony Tunes from 2006 (or maybe earlier).
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:14am still b/p:

Mitt Romney's people called me one or two times this week, but Mitt himself was on my message machine TWICE. He really, really likes me!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:14am fishmonkeystew:

I'm mighty fine, Doug! The wife and I met with a bank yesterday about getting some dough to open a music venue and they really liked our ideas. Keep your fingers crossed! I'm taking the world by storm!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:14am glenn:

les haricot. say it sort of fast and slurry, like an acadian would.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:15am fishmonkeystew:

He sounds like a bit of a creeper, B/P.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:15am annie:

fms- fantastic news!! i'm rooting for you!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:17am ndbob:

sounds great fms!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:17am glenn:

after some consideration, not that i'm going to have to worry about it, i think i would rather have mitt calling me than the newtster or any of the rest of those backwards deluded retards.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:17am fishmonkeystew:

Annie, you'll have to stop by NE CT and visit when we're open. It's a small place, but with BIG opportunities, including space to expand if it takes off like we hope. We're hoping to be open by May 1st.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:18am Andrew:

Remember, at WFMU he is referred to as Mittens Romney.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Say the French phrase "Les haricot" swiftly, and you get "zydeco." No really.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Fishmonkey, that's FANTASTIC. Fingers X'd!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:20am still b/p:

One more Mitten-bit robo-message on my phone and I'm changing my number, name, address and astrological sign.

fms -- What'll you call the place?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:25am ndbob:

robo political calls are illegal here - there won't be much of a presidential contest here - although there could be an interesting senate race
Fri. 2/10/12 9:25am Brian en Angleterre:

Go fms
glenn you are full of beans today.

This Bobby Valentin sounds so much like other numbers.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:25am dc pat:

man, Republicans never bother us in DC...they know it's a lost cause.
Fri. 2/10/12 9:26am listener james from westwood:

all the best, fms, on the new venture!
read recently that mittens is so creepy b/c he's a living example of what animators refer to as the uncanny valley.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:27am glenn:

coffee beans, at present.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:27am fishmonkeystew:

The Stomping Ground. It'll have a small food menu, rotating microbrews on tap, full bar, coffee and espresso, and a small performance space as the focus. Music every day we are open if I can swing it. Art demos/classes during the day as well. Everybody is welcome.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:28am dc pat:

Mittens is creepy because he has absolutely no idea what a normal life is like.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:28am annie:

what a great idea!!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:29am dc pat:

Nice, fms--make sure there are some decent veggie options on the menu..
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

@FishMS
You should broadcast live from the Stomp!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:29am still b/p:

Excellent! I would eagerly patronize such a place. (Though I was kinda hoping for a "Fishmore East" sign over the door.)
Fri. 2/10/12 9:30am Brian en Angleterre:

Will this be in Storrs? There will be a captive student audience if so.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:31am dc pat:

ah, that would be KILLER. Stream all your live shows. Does anybody do that??
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:31am dc pat:

I mean does any non-radio station do that?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:33am Andrew:

put it on the GTD Stream! Though if you live locally, the rules say you have to go to the venue to listen.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:35am fishmonkeystew:

@DC Pat - Veggie options are a definite. We have many vegetarian and vegan friends, and though I'm not, I love vegetarian food. As for live streaming, I'm trying to figure that out. I want to record everything as well. Maybe produce a cd/lp of the various performances. @Brian - about 30 minutes from Storrs, and I will definitely be advertising in Storrs and Willimantic. @Doug - I totally want to do that, just gotta figure out how.
Fri. 2/10/12 9:36am Brian en Angleterre:

Ismael Quitana. Mmmmmmm
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:37am fishmonkeystew:

Songs about insanity? I am so there.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:37am ndbob:

e.g. "The Rubber Room"?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:38am annie:

i hope i find some cash so i can donate to the drive.. just lost more than half my hours here..
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:38am joe:

Mental Revenge, Waylon!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:38am dc pat:

sounds great, best of luck fms! Yeah, I guess veggie goes without saying these days. Good times for veg.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:40am fishmonkeystew:

I make these jalapeno poppers wrapped with grilled eggplant and stuffed with a smoky cream cheese filling that will knock your socks off.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:40am glenn:

you could prolly fill both discs with porter wagoner songs.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Andrew!

@ndbob
The Rubber Room was on my previous compilation, but you've got the RIGHT idea.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:41am seang:

dig it
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:41am dc pat:

...ok, now I'm starving. thanks. jeeze how do you cook something like that?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:41am still b/p:

The Wiki page's uncanny valley graph -- which already locates our responses to humanoid robot, stuffed animal, zombie and bunraku puppet -- should absolutely include the Romneylian.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:42am dc pat:

ok, shh. Gotta pay attention to this set...
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:42am annie:

as i cannot stomach soggy eggplant, that would be the recipe for me..
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:44am glenn:

can you do it with zucchini? i'm allergic to eggplant.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:46am fishmonkeystew:

Grilled thinly sliced eggplant with garlic olive oil in advance, slice jalapenos lengthwise and fill with cream cheese concoction, wrap sliced eggplant around filled jalapeno and skewer with a toothpick to hold, then broil or grill. They're a bit messy to eat, but tasty! And if you are an omnivore, you can wrap 'em with bacon instead. And you can fill them with brie, camembert , or whatever you wish.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:47am still b/p:

A free trial membership at BJ's allowed me to pick up a big sack o' breaded eggplant slices. And a set of tires. The eggplant is great with some veggie lasagne.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:47am annie:

better living through avocadoes..
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Got this terrific Sonny Scott here: bit.ly...
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:47am dc pat:

my buddy makes amazing zucchini parmesan because his wife can't deal w/ eggplant.

wow, gotta try the poppers...
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:47am fishmonkeystew:

Zucchinis would prolly work well, too. It's a pretty versatile recipe. Maybe with some sort of mushroom stuffing.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:48am fishmonkeystew:

Amen, Annie. That egg and avocado recipe you shared the other day is amazing and easy.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:49am annie:

omg, and it's so delicious!!!
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Excuse me, but I LOVE where this comments thread is going.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:50am annie:

ok, so there HAS to be a cooking show here on fmu
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:50am glenn:

this may not go over well. semper fi! http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1129161--u-s-marines-unpunished-after-posing-with-nazi-symbol-in-afghanistan
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:51am ndbob:

I saw that Glenn
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:52am dc pat:

oh yeah, meant to say thanks for the egg+avocado dish, annie. have to try that too--we're big on avocados around here.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:53am annie:

see, it's all about good food, really... one of my passions
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:56am fishmonkeystew:

It's amazing how good simple food can be if made with care and good thoughts. I made a french onion soup a couple of weeks ago that was really easy to make and tasted about 50 times more flavorful than the stuff you usually get in your average restaurant. It's all about taking your time and not rushing things.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:57am annie:

so, you got a room above the place for a live-in worker?
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:58am glenn:

true, but unfortunately most people who order food in restaurants expect it yesterday.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:58am Andrew:

I think restaurant food is about making sure its got plenty of cream and/or butter in it. Yum!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:58am marcury:

Greetings. long time no ocean!
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:59am glenn:

and an insane amount of salt.
  Fri. 2/10/12 9:59am bec:

that 'naive' marien behaviour is pretty unsavoury, unlike all the killer food ideas being thrown down in this thread!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:00am glenn:

if you follow pink up with some floyd council, then brian can get his wish.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:01am annie:

there should be a pat of butter in everything
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:02am still b/p:

Stop, now, stop....my lunch actually is pretty decent today but it'll taste like Kleenex and poker chips if this talk of six-star French onion soup and such goes on.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:02am glenn:

i like the butter / olive oil combination.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:03am trish:

I made bread for the first time in a very long time, recently. Light rye darkened with some cocoa. Grilled sandwiches are tasting better than any resto within tromping distance.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:04am annie:

i was in a pickle when i unearthed a bottle of garlic granules and it was like a rock.. so i poured it full of olive oil and let chemistry take over.... now i have this amazing garlicky olive oil mixture..
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:05am glenn:

i thought raw garlic in olive oil was a very bad idea, botulismically speaking.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:07am annie:

hey fms- be sure to consider recipes for those who are allergic to vinegar or mold... and man, some ideas for fresh food glutin-free is astoundingly easy.. and yes glenn it's why i stopped doing that...
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:10am fishmonkeystew:

Annie, you are right on about the allergy-free stuff. And I wish we had a place for you to crash. You'd like it out here. We have a burgeoning community of artists and musicians here that are starting to take over the town. It's an old mill town that is redefining itself through the arts. @Trish - I love rye bread and that sounds amazing.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:10am ndbob:

I feel a little out of focus here - I greatly prefer meat versions of foods to veggie ones.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:11am fishmonkeystew:

Hey ndbob, how about a filet mignon stuffed with oysters? That's a favorite of ours.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Marcury!!! Everyone wish Marcury a happy birthday!

Great to (see) you Bec!

And always a pleasure Trsh!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:12am ndbob:

sounds great!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:12am jill:

My culinary pursuit this weekend will be Lemon-Thyme-Vanilla cookies - slightly different direction from your "savory" food conversation here. But is it too early to want to eat my lunch?
Drummer, The Studio One Singles = yummy.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:13am trish:

search "light rye cocoa" and you'll likely find George's recipe that I used. Oh yeah. There's molasses in there, too.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:13am still b/p:

Happyyyyy.....
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:13am Christopher:

garlic is a fairly potent antimicrobial, for what it's worth.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:13am annie:

yes, i feel most at home in the artist-type areas... and boy am i reconsidering how i make money.. i just came up with a great idea..... might have to hash this out in my brain.. for lack of a better term, "life coach" ...hhmm.but to help people focus on what they're good at and offer ideas on how to make that happen.. seeing as i'm one who redefines herself every few years as it is.. hhmm.. lightbulb!!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:14am fishmonkeystew:

Happy birthday, Marcury! Coincidentally, I just opened an email that turned out to be a birthday card from my vet for my pitbull. Too funny.
Fri. 2/10/12 10:14am listener james from westwood:

happy happy, marcury!
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Our good brother Marcury is a professional chef, and a brilliant one at that. Glad you're aboard for this culinary conversation.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:15am dc pat:

I'd like to get in a little NM red sauce this weekend--the last batch I made had some dirt in the chiles so ended up really gritty. DAMMIT!
Fri. 2/10/12 10:15am Bruce in Boston:

I love this sh*t! Thanks Doug! Check out http://bit.ly/y7sNh6 for downloads...
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:16am trish:

@annie
maybe slant it toward embracing/coping with change
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:17am fishmonkeystew:

'kay. Off to see the wizard. I'll catch you all later. Thanks for the killer tunes, Doug. And before I go - @DC Pat - NM CHILES! I lived in ABQ, NM for about 3 years and now have a serious green chile addiction. We mail order them at 10lbs at a time.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:18am annie:

thanks trish, i'm writing that down... i went to a job interview yesterday accompanied by a co-worker who used to do social work. she came up with great ideas... i'm thinking she would be a great partner in this endeavor
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:18am trish:

.. highly variable definitions for coached success vs.

  Fri. 2/10/12 10:25am Todd 76%:

@fishmonkeystew - I'm a fellow Nutmeg Stater, northern Fairfield County. Very interested in hearing more about your new venture/venue. Lots of musicians/bands/artists around here looking to break out of D-Block (Danbury) area and find other places to play besides coastal CT and NYC...
Hi Doug! Thanks for all of the great music!

thanks - i will email you this weekend
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@Randy
I know you only do it for the fish. They love the vibrations.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:31am Hugo:

Nice set.
Keep 'em odd, Doug!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:33am Randy:

Yup, it cures lateral line disease....or causes it. I haven't quite figured that one out yet.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

More gems from Palm coming up soon, Hugo!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:37am Carmichael:

Good morning, everyone.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:38am annie:

hey carm!!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:38am mike cooper:

Love the jef Gilson stuff Doug - i hve a couple of re-press albums. Soul of Africa and lots of Lloyd Miller stuff...
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:40am holland oats:

in all my 30+ years of listening to this station, this is the first-ever mention of jean-luc ponty i can recall
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:41am ndbob:

Hi Carmichael!
Fri. 2/10/12 10:43am Alex in Illinois:

I think tha a Valiha is that Malagasy bamboo tube-zither that was heardin the beginning of that track. Yes, there is a Wikipedia entry confirming it.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Carmichael.

And WELCOME aboard Brother Cooper!

You're exactly right, Alex. Valiha is the name of the instrument prominent at the start of that number.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:47am mike cooper:

Hi Doug snowing like crazy here in Rome - again...!!!
Fri. 2/10/12 10:48am listener james from westwood:

@Randy, they'll come around to the good stuff soon enough.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:48am still b/p:

Doug - in the sort of random access playlist of the GTDS stream when there isn't a specific show underway, there's no time/title reference to go back somehow and ID a song ..right?
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:49am jk:

morning all, it's a beautiful spring day here in boston. made all the better by this bossa
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:50am annie:

b/p-i use winamp and it gives the title of the tune if you catch it while the song is up.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

More snow in Rome? Hardly a speck here in Pittsburgh.

@still b/p
That's right. I would like to develop a "playlist" page for the stream that would show its song history. Fingers crossed on that. In the meantime, you can always email me if you miss something. I can tap into the software and check back about 12 hours' worth.
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:53am ndbob:

yep - and the titles show up on an iphone as well
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:55am Carmichael:

OK, just perused all of the comments. I'm enlightened, entertained and HUNGRY! And Hi ColdBob and Annie!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:57am holland oats:

this os marruazes reminds me of afro sambas
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:57am still b/p:

Yesterday between the end of Charlie's show and about 3 PM. I think artist and track was Spanish or Portuguese, title ending I believe with "Ritmo #4."
Distraction was the problem -- didn't write it down at the time. Real Player lets me go back into the previous half-hour or so including the track info, but I tried the dig-back too late after the selection of interest.
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

You DON'T want to miss the song after next. A heartbroken fellow behind the wheel push his car faster, faster, faster (up to 200 KPH!) while he contemplates suicide. Wow!
  Fri. 2/10/12 10:58am Christopher:

Norma Kelly.. gonna have to look her up! Loving it...

It could have been Os Originais do Samba performing "Em Ritmo das 4 Grandes."
  Fri. 2/10/12 11:03am Carmichael:

♫ "He must have wanted to pass me up, cuz he kept on honking his horn ....." ♫
  Fri. 2/10/12 11:03am marcury:

Must to work, bye all!
  Fri. 2/10/12 11:03am still b/p:

The blog Mutant Sounds has a least three Palm releases by Gilson. A link to two of them is provided above by Bruce in Boston @10:15

Good listening, punctuated by reading, as ever. Many thanks to you, Doug.
A recent dig into some musical-string memories led me back to this show of yours, /playlists/shows/8824, which I wholeheartedly recommend to fellow listening listeners. 45~50 min in and onwards, yes.

Friday morning-end greetings,
Avatar Fri. 2/10/12 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

Here is what thrills me more than almost anything: When I play what might be characterized by some as more "challenging" music, the number of listeners to the stream goes UP and the number comments goes DOWN.

I love you.
  Fri. 2/10/12 11:41am annie:

this morning's show has been especially smooth and tasty
  Fri. 2/10/12 11:42am annie:

thank you...

Fine Palm set. One can easily do a full set on each of them (as leaders and sidemen).

At noon, I will switch over to hosting Steinski's A Rough Mix. The playlist for that show will be here:
