@Josh, I assume "Come Down Easy" is pretty good workout music. As will be the PTV3 to come soon. @G, standing is definitely overrated and underrated at the same time. There should be a compromise between acting in the public benefit to resolve a dispute and being barred from asking for court action on a matter that is of no direct concern to oneself. Oh wait, did you mean the other kind of standing? It's been a long coupla weeks at work! @PB, Ken in HP, hello! |

@12539, great quote. I agree. But it's still overrated, as is easiness. |

DB, you're short dissertation on "standing" brought back bad memories of 2nd year civil procedure.

@glowingone - that's funny, I was just thinking to myself how impressed I am with this new lineup and how vital Gen's new music has been with PTV3 after a long mediocre spell through all the rave stuff and its aftermath. I love these last few Vanity Case releases. The band he's got playing with him now is just really really good IMHO |

Mon. 1/30/12 9:31pm
the glowing one:
@dan: at least the band is good ;)

Not to be confused with "Almost Cut My Hair" by CSN (or was it CSNY?).

@Van, no that's me all the way -- don't you know this is the 7th or 8th Best Show on WFMU? @Glowing One, yeah, it's true Gen's voice is older now -- but s/he's using it like a real artist who's gotten old, and working with what it is. Much better than trying to listen to Mick Jagger, who's about the same age I reckon. I like old people who keep on keeping on. |

Hello all you music lovers. I read the polemics on the accuplaylist. I tend to melt as soon as two notes follow one another. Sound and dance even before one employs the word music.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 9:47pm
Van in DC:
Julie is the BESTEST. She is why I found you guys. She has "Nick the Bard" coming in. Hmmph. I'd rather see DJ Bronx Elf :)
|
Mon. 1/30/12 9:49pm
PB:
All kidding aside, what does "remastering" mean? I have about 4 different CD versions of Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane (all supposedly "remastered", "half-speed mastered" or re-done in some other way) and I admit that I can't hear any difference. Maybe my ears are just not sensitive enough, I don't know.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 9:50pm
Van in DC:
Dunno who "Nick the Bard" is, but DAMN IT! I'll probably have to listen to GTDS stream tomorrow during the day instead of my normal archive catch-up of Dark Night of the Soul :(

@Van, I meant the 7th or 8th best show in this timeslot on a weeknight on WFMU. I might be behind myself in the ranking, by my quick thumbnail calculations. |
|
Mon. 1/30/12 9:57pm
Van in DC:
Well met :) Actually, you are quite wonderful, if I might say so after just discovering your show. What took me so long?
|
Mon. 1/30/12 9:58pm
Thierry:
Thanks Dan; even though we have the program schedule which resizes so well in the navigator, it is always helpful to hear upcoming news about the radio. For a foreign (french) speaker, Chris T's show, for example, is a great resource of English language and humor.

Dan B:
@PB, re remastering: my understanding is that it involves a lot of cleaning up of the original tapes and using various techniques to clarify the sound and produce a finished product with a much more robust and present sound than what could be created at the time of recording (either due to technological or money constraints). At it's most basic it would involve creating a new album by playing the masters on better equipment and filtering the sound through better equalization equipment to reduce hiss, let bass notes blossom, etc. |

@Thierry, I had a Haitian roommate of your name once. Agreed that Chris T's program is excellent. |

@Van, what?! I haven't? I'll have to rectify that oversight TONIGHT! |
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:10pm
Van in DC:
I came up the escalator from L'Enfant plaza once here in DC (where Joshua Bell played incognito) and a musician was playing a Kitaro tune. I stopped, listened, enjoyed. When he finished, I walked up to him and gave him a $20 bill and said, "I LOVE Kitaro!". Goodness did his eyes light up, and not by the 20.

I almost quit my job to go see Magma in DC in 2010. I'd just come back from a month's vacation and couldn't get the day off.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:18pm
Van in DC:
Great. Just what I needed. ANOTHER WFMU show that I really like. Sigh. It's a plot...a conspiracy I say! WFMU is intent on sucking in all of us to most every show so that we have no other life! Oh well. It could be much worse. But still, I have PART of my life to myself HA HA HA! ...oooh, wait, what's that next show coming up again....?
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:22pm
Parq:
Van, I speak from experience when I say, if you're going to have something that doesn't allow you to have any other kind of a life, WFMU is a better choice than whatever's in second through sixth place put together.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:22pm
Parq:
Daniel, was that live track with the chorus the Magma track?
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:25pm
Van in DC:
@Dan - check out "In Person Digital" by Kitaro sometime. Amazing.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:26pm
Manolo:
man, the voice of Catherine Ribeiro is pure magic.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:26pm

@Parq - thanks, I'm starting to figure that out :)

Mon. 1/30/12 10:27pm

@Parq, yeah, that was the Magma track -- it was from the Trilogie box set, which is 3 CDs of the band playing the whole cycle of Theusz Hamtaahk, Wurdah Ztah, and Mekanik Destruktiv Kommandoh. |

I have a nightmare in which Ken decides to give each dj an additional show on the webstreams, and then wfmu is competing not only for all my time, but with itself.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:33pm
Van in DC:
@12539 - I already have that competition problem between GTDS stream and live stream during Doug and Amanda's shows... :)
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:36pm
PB:
Hopefully this doesn't go to his head or anything, but in my opinion DB has the most consistently interesting show on FMU.

I love Patti but Radio Ethiopia was always my least favorite of her albums.

@PB - well, I like it so far during First Listen. And he HAS played Kate Bush...that's a plus. But never Toyah, nor Kitaro nor This Mortal Coil? But on the otherhand, he HAS played Klaus Schulze and TD...well...we're crossing a few genres there admittedly... :) oooh, hey, how about David Sylvian...? ..check, played. +1

@Van: Gotta check Westlaw to see if the statute of limitations has expired on that yet or not.
|
Mon. 1/30/12 10:54pm
Van in DC:
Okay, Mr. Dan, nice show, I like it. Must go, but will definitely get a second opinion tomorrow courtesy WFMU's magical archive genie. Plus, I want to see if you actually WILL play Kitaro. I double dog DARE ya :) @G - Expired, I think. @T-Zero - wow I've only seen you on archive playlists on Julie's show I think. (Me as the archivist late commenter, not you)

I'm trying to remember the name of a steel drum musician I saw years ago. Solo artist I think, very avant-garde - experimental, American probably. Tough question since I don't give many elements. Any help?
