Tue. 1/31/12 12:38pm
tonyc:
Realized yesterday that for the entire 20 years I've been on FMU, I've never played anything by XTC. What one track should I play by them? (Not today, but on a future show.) |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:39pm
Jeremy:
afternoon Tony! grokking the android grooves...
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:40pm
tonyc:
Hey there, Jeremy! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:40pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I love anything from Black Sea or Drums and Wires. Also, early single B-sides are fabo
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:41pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I only just recently learned that XTC seldom performed live, due to Andy Partridge having bouts of stage fright.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:41pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Ricardo M. XTC are such an FMU staple, I feel obligated to play at least one track. |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:41pm
Ike:
Ugh, the worst sound in the world: A screaming baby. What was Pseudo Code thinking? Other than that, great show, Tony!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:42pm
conrad:
XTC? "Dear God" is the classic, but everyone probably knows that one. How 'bout either "Meccanik Dancing" or "Helicopter" for the Beefheart/Devo-ish New Wave discos, of "Complicated game" for the angst-ridden doom drone sound.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:42pm
Jeremy:
I remember especially liking Looking for Footprints, but googling it seems it only came out on a flexi from Flexipop! magazine. I like that Mr Partridge album.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:42pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Ike! Even if you are a baby hater.... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I just bought a horrible 80's rap 12" called Funky Baby with manipulated baby samples, that sound like they came from one of those diagnose baby ailments by their cry LPs.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:44pm
tonyc:
Jeremy: I have played the Mr. Partridge album ... but will check out "Looking for Footprints." Thanks! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:44pm
Jeremy:
I love the whole infant Distress genre!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:46pm
Ike:
Baby hater, guilty as charged! Lock me up. As long as I can still listen to FMU from my cell.

Tue. 1/31/12 12:46pm

RE Infant Music genres: Don't forget their Swimming Behavior..... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:48pm
conrad:
Oops, I meant: 'OR "Complicated Game" ' But you knew that.

Tue. 1/31/12 12:48pm

Dear Ricardo. Ha ha. | |

4 out of 5 Belgian dentists agree, Tony is the best.

Tue. 1/31/12 12:50pm
tonyc:
Conrad: Thanks for the suggestions! Don't know any of those ... will investigate. |

Tue. 1/31/12 12:57pm
glenn:
jeeeez. i saw xtc in toronto in '81? maybe '82.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 12:58pm
tonyc:
XTC have always been a blank spot for me, somehow. Never bought any of their records.... |

Tue. 1/31/12 1:09pm
Jack:
Hi Tony; it's always great to hear you. I'm the same way with XTC; I have some of their music, but I just can't get into them. I'm like that with a lot of music; sometimes I have to be in the right receptive mood before they'll register.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:10pm
Jack:
( oh, now that's funny; I just recently discovered Amom-Duul ( Hi-Jack) ! I'm going through a Krautrock phase.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:11pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Jack, and ... Hi-Jack! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:11pm
BSI:
Late to the party as usual. Too much to react to. I'll just sit here and blow bubbles across the canyons of my mind. Or something.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:14pm
conrad:
To be honest, I never bought much of their stuff either. Those songs I suggested really stood out for me - XTC for non-XTC fans.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:14pm
BSI:
Also a baby hater, but very big on certain "infant genres"...!
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:15pm
tonyc:
Greetings, BSI! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:17pm
BSI:
Great stuff TonyC! Oh, and Jack: I've been going through a krautrock phase of my own, for about 35 years so far. Some phases are more like chronic illnesses, thank god.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:20pm
glenn:
krautrock rocks! and probably also krauts.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:20pm
SLJones:
Hey Tony - thanks again for playing a Folks On Fire tune! The fanbase is growing and gaining listeners...we are really grateful for the airtime (and none of us yet 50, so a reunion may still happen). Your show is always a great breath of fresh air.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:21pm
tonyc:
Thank yee, BSI! I've been krauting myself for 'round 35 years.... |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:21pm
tonyc:
Hey Steven! Glad to know you're listening!! |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:24pm
tonyc:
And here's hoping a reunion does happen! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:26pm
Daniel:
So grateful I tuned in. Lovely show today, Tony.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:27pm
Ricardo Montalban:
All by myself in my side of the building at work today! <cranks it up>
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:28pm
tonyc:
Daniel: Thanks much! Glad you're enjoying it.... |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:28pm
tonyc:
No more scooter rides in the cemetery.... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:31pm
nickel seats:
Prefer 70's XTC with Barry Andrews-Drums & Wires a favorite.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:31pm
Daniel:
Rush, seriously? After the scooter-in-the-cemetery line, and the utterly charming Sunshine Singers? Tony, you're a genius!! Sound and fury drowns my heart. . .
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:34pm
tonyc:
The Sunshine Singers were from Portland, by the way. (And thanks, Daniel ... and Nickel Seats too.) |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:36pm
Martha:
Only Tony could pull this off. I agree with Daniel.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:36pm
BSI:
There were a few years where I totally "got" XTC, bought a ton of their material. Then just as suddenly, I "un-got" them. It's weird. I still dig SOME the Dukes of Stratosphear stuff but it's strange. I never stop liking something, but that's an exception.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:36pm
Jack:
@BSI - I never realized that "Krautrock" was such a wide and diverse "genre". I've just discovered Popul Vuh (through Werner Herzogs movies)
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:38pm
BSI:
@Jack: I guess my message was more of a warning. For me it's been an expensive obsession for a long time. [silently salutes wife, who bravely endures weekends with me & the stereo].
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:43pm
Jack:
Thanks for the warning! Another f'instance; my wife has been listening to the Decemberists for years, and only recently have I finally "got them" and like them. In fact I hated a lot of music when I had first heard it, only to completely change my mind 180 degrees a few months later: Led Zeppelin, the Police, etc. more...
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:47pm
tonyc:
Looking at it from the reverse angle, there are very few things I liked when I was younger that I now dislike. George Duke is one of the few I can think of -- perhaps it's time to give him another chance! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:52pm
Holly in NC:
I cannot BELIEVE I missed Cygnus X-1. Oh, thank goodness for archives!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:52pm
Ike:
I dig that Asmus Tietchens. Also, "Asmus Tietchens" is fun to say.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:52pm
SLJones:
Still think Skylarking is a lovely album. All other XTC records are mixed for this listener. Egos in that band are so intense I think they benefited from an equally arrogant producer like Todd Rundgren, who really gave that record shape...
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:53pm
tonyc:
Hey there, Holly in NC! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:57pm
Kay:
Perhaps XTC's cover of All Along the Watchtower on a cover's only show.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:58pm
Jeremy:
I also dig Tietchens, but not Asmus as Love-ins...
|
Tue. 1/31/12 1:58pm
Jack:
"...equally arrogant producer like Todd Rundgren..." So very true, and yet one of the main reasons he is a great producer.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:04pm
Kay:
"XTC have only ever recorded one cover version — a frenetic rendition of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower (White Music, 1977). Partridge's vocal delivery is stutteringly pneumatic and Barry Andrews' cheap organ sound throws a legato blanket over the whole affair."
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:06pm
tonyc:
I'll have to give that a listen, Kay! (Didn't they also cover a Beefheart song?) |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:06pm
tonyc:
On a Beefheart tribute LP.... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:07pm
Michael:
From a great XTC fan: there are some real gems on all their albums, especially the run from Drums and Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement, Mummer, Big Express and Skylarking. Also the Dukes discs were fun homages to the ‘60s as well.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:07pm
Holly in NC:
Re XTC - 1 vote for 'Making Plans for Nigel'. Dukes of the Stratosphear's 'Vanishing Girl' is a power pop classic, but perhaps overplayed
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:08pm
Doug S.:
Have moved my base of operations to the public library. Have the stream via the iPhone app and the playlist on the library computer. It feels kinda naughty. Hi Holly!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:08pm
Kay:
I didn't write or research above statement (pulled from a quote on their Chalkhills website), but you're right, they covered Ella Guru.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:14pm
Holly in NC:
Hi Doug - After my mediafire scare, I need a drink. Is 2:13 pm too early? Yes. Yes, it is.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:15pm
BSI:
Neh, it isn't. | |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:15pm
Kay:
(Perhaps XTC's only cover on one of THEIR albums.)
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:16pm
Jack:
Holly, what happened with Mediafire, if I may ask? (I'm donloading something even as we speak.)
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:17pm
tonyc:
Kay: Yep, that must be it. As I remember their cover of "Ella Guru" was extremely faithful and accurate. |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:20pm
Holly in NC:
@Jack - MF was temporarily down in my neck of the woods - about 20 minutes, enough to make me worry. Now all is well, my files are are fine, everyone else's files are fine, everything is accessible & downloadable, phew!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:22pm
Jack:
Holly, can't blame you for worrying, in this post-megaupload environment. Hey Doug S. in the Public Library!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:23pm
Doug S.:
Protecting Mediafire is the new Bastille Day. To the ramparts! Seriously though, these are freaky times. A nice piece about the demise of Holy Warbles (and the post-Megaupload meltdown) is coming out in the Brooklyn Rail penned by Gary from Bodega Pop. Greetings Jack!
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:25pm
tonyc:
Here's another baby song for you, Ike. |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:26pm
Alf from Upstate:
I remember Epic Soundtrack's live set on WFMU. Played an old out-of-tune piano if I remember correctly.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:28pm
tonyc:
Alf: I remember that too! Was at the station that day. |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:28pm
tonyc:
And yes, you do remember correctly! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:28pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Oh Man! Not Holy Warbles! So sad.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:28pm
Ike:
I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics but doubt that was infant-related. "Jelly babies" are some sort of British candy, made famous internationally by Dr. Who. I presume the comma was a gag or pun. I'm not too keen on R. Wyatt's voice but at least no babies screamed or screeched.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:31pm
tonyc:
Ike: There was a line about throwing babies up in the air I though you might appreciate. And for not liking Wyatt you really should serve some time in lock-up, until you see reason. |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:35pm
Doug S.:
I was at the station that day, too, Tony. Good old Springdale Avenue. I loved that house!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:40pm
Ike:
I loved that house too! | |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:41pm
bennett4senate:
hey Tony, enjoying the show out here in Los Angeles, thanks.
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:44pm
tonyc:
Glad you're enjoying the show, Bennett! Thanks for listening..... |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:45pm
tonyc:
Thanks fur tuning in, ev'body! Be sure to catch Doug's show at 6:00.... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:46pm
Doug S.:
If memory serves, the old house that WFMU moved into on Springdale Avenue was called Avatar House. It was used as a sort of alternative school run by Upsala College. The tiled bathroom on the second floor was a marvel. The Alan Watts Rejuvination Chamber was kinda scary. Tonight at 6pm, an hour of recently download Japanese tracks. Very diggable!
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:47pm
Jeremy:
Great show Tony! | |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:48pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Jeremy!! There's about another 17 minutes of Algarnas Tradgard to go, by the way..... |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:50pm
tonyc:
They were kind of Swedish krautrock.... |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:52pm
BSI:
Curse meetings! Federal Duck? Any relation to Fuzzy?
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:54pm
tonyc:
BSI: Nope. The U.S. Duck may have been Federal, but they weren't Fuzzy. |
|
|
Tue. 1/31/12 2:58pm
tonyc:
Cheers, everyone -- thanks for attending. See you in 2 weeks! Keep it tuned to the stream, and don't forget Doug's show at 6:00! |
|
Tue. 1/31/12 3:15pm
Kay:
Wyatting (from Urban Dictionary): Very recently the practice of deliberately selecting annoying or extreme music on an mp3 jukebox to cause irritation to others has become known as Wyatting. This is a reference to prog/artrock musician Robert Wyatt and his 'Dondestan' album, typical of the kind of record a Wyatter would choose. It is generally agreed that the most effective music for Wyatting is that of US avant-garde quasi-operatic vocalist Diamanda Galas. Other common choices include the most well known exponents of free-jazz, improv/noise music and euro-prog-metal, though the latter is chosen because it is considered naff, uncool and embarassing, not because it has the effect normally required of music regarded as good for Wyatting. As in "Some idiot's Wyatting, this is the second no-wave record in a row."
|
Tue. 1/31/12 3:17pm
Kay:
No comment on your show's selections. (By the way, I love Robert Wyatt.)
|
Tue. 1/31/12 3:20pm
tonyc:
As far as I'm concerned, all Wyatt-haters should be locked up, and perhaps even sterilized.
|
Tue. 1/31/12 3:22pm
tonyc:
Except for Ike, of course.
