Hullo dere! Today's first set will feature an entire (short) movie, Patrick McGuinn's "Desert Spirits." Showtime is set for 3 minutes after the hour, so get your popcorn ready!

Hola, Senor!
  12:08pm
ricardo montalban:

I'm in the middle of a snow globe today, unable to go to work. Buried under about 8 inches of snow.
Avatar 12:09pm
tonyc:

Perfect weather for listening to a movie about doing peyote in the desert.
  12:13pm
J-Mar:

No way! I went to high school with Henry McGuinn! I totally recognize his voice.
  12:14pm
Carmichael:

Holy Moly, Ricardo. Although it was about 25 last night, it will be sunny and 60s today. I must be closer to the desert (and hence, the peyote) than you are.
  12:14pm
ricardo montalban:

Exactly! How'd you know?
  12:14pm
Dan in Seattle:

Never enough Peyote.
Avatar 12:16pm
tonyc:

J-Mar: Wow!! Do tell....

Hello there, Dan in Seattle!
  12:18pm
Jeremy:

Afternoon All, projectionist Tony...I am digging this theatre: it's a bit sticky under the seats, but the sound system rules!
  12:18pm
Brian in UK:

I dream of eight inches.
  12:19pm
ricardo montalban:

I hear Seattle's going to be buried in fluffy white stuff.
  12:19pm
Jeremy:

Yes, Sr Montalban: Henry McGuinn stories, pleez!
  12:20pm
Jeremy:

I mean J-Mar, stories pleez!
  12:21pm

I need that 'voice' to remind me to listen to this archive next time I eat something fun.

Greetings, Jeremy and Brian!
Avatar 12:21pm

And dw, too!
  12:22pm
ricardo montalban:

How many 'stranded in the desert' movies are there?
Also around '94, there was Ruben and Ed, a surreal Crispin Glover vehicle with Howard Hessman and Karen Black.
  12:23pm
J-Mar:

Well, we went to high school in Nashville -- Henry moved to Nashville from California with his mom and his stepdad, who was Emmylou Harris' manager at the time. (His dad is Roger McGuinn.) He played in a hardcore band called Die Vixers with some other friends of mine. I haven't seen him in years and years at this point -- last time might have been around the time he made this movie. (I'd never heard of it until just now.)
  12:24pm
dw:

Beavis & Butthead movie too.
  12:25pm
ricardo montalban:

Yes! I forgot! B&BH had a mystical peyote scene, too, I believe
Avatar 12:25pm
tonyc:

J-Mar: Wow & Double-wow! I didn't know the McGuinn bros were Roger McGuinn's kids!
  12:25pm
Brian in UK:

Peyote buttons always sounds so cute.
Oops hello Tony.
Did you write Karen Black. Cisco Pike with Krisoffersson. Mmmmmm.
  12:26pm
ricardo montalban:

I see Netflix has Desert Spirits bundled with a movie called Suroh: Alien Hitchhiker
  12:28pm
Jeremy:

Thanks J-Mar! Anyone know when this movie was made?
Avatar 12:28pm
tonyc:

I actually enjoy listening to it more than watching it -- it's not very visually inspired.
  12:28pm
J-Mar:

Yeah, I had to look it up to make sure it was the same person, and then I heard him talk on the soundtrack, and I knew. Takes me back, it does.
  12:29pm
Brian in UK:

Was that a chestnut mare?
Avatar 12:29pm
tonyc:

Jeremy: It was released in 1994, and probably made not too much before that.
Avatar 12:31pm
tonyc:

Brian in UK: The film's in black & white, so it was a black & white mare.
  12:32pm
Jeremy:

It does make for a very evocative listen. I always like when the foley is left into the music, like the first release of the Wicker Man soundtrack.
  12:32pm
dw:

Than you Tony, this is great!
  12:33pm
dw:

Thank you, that is/
Avatar 12:33pm

Tony, did you mention that PF Sloan wrote the Atlantis song? It appears to have been written and recorded in 71 or 72. the 45 is a Candian pressing.
Avatar 2:23pm

Hey, why didn't you tell me you were coming here, Tony? Some great record stores here. Jim Keltner played drums on the Two Friends album.
Avatar 2:40pm

Carmichael: It was a lightening one-day trip. I did hit a bunch of record stores, though, and made out well.
  2:42pm

There's a great prog place specifically, where I hang around a lot. The 2 guys who work there are pretty knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
