Listener comments!

  Sat. 12/31/11 11:04am paul:

Michael got a deluxe Some Girls CD for Christmas. Right?
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:06am jonnie:

Michael's on fire this morning. Maybe he can make a New Year's resolution to be a nicer person on the air in 2012??
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:07am Audience:

Tough room.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:07am James:

Good morning and Happy New Year's Eve, folks!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:08am Victor (baby):

Happy New Year
my Brother!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:09am ??:

Jonnie - what re you talking about?
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:14am kat330:

Anyone else with a visual contrast issue here in comments? My eyes aren't good enough for this.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:14am mrmucho:

I heard 'free man in paris' in the supermarket the other day. then the next day, in the same store, same time, I heard joni's 'help me'
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:16am G:

It's black and beige to me, kat -- couldn't be much more contrasty. If you don't see good contrast, one possibility is to adjust your settings at home.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:17am paul:

I heard a Heptones song playing at a Dairy Queen. That's a first.
Nice talking to the man himself, Mr. Michael Shelly.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:17am kat330:

@mrmucho: Reverse order then.
@G: it's mauve on peach for me, very faint.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:17am jonnie:

Mike needs to tone down the snark in his stories, stop being rude to his phone-in guests and so on. I enjoy the tunes he plays but I have never listened to a show without feeling negative vibes, cringing when he doesn't show respect to the music greats he speaks to or hearing stories about all the media figures and people he runs into that he hates.
Also, I have little kids so I turn the radio on to drown them out not hear other peoples children or constant references to them Maybe I'm the one who needs work
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:17am G:

maybe, jonnie.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:18am paul:

I think that's a big first step, Jonnie.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:19am Victor (baby):

Most def (on the last sentence jonnie)
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:20am cats420:

everyone needs to get some drinks in them
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:21am G:

skol!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:21am cats420:

kids included
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:21am paul:

Premium suggestion: A Lloyd Michigan Enterprises compilation.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:22am sd:

i never noticed any snarkiness, BUT he did get pissed when we made fun of his bright fonts a few weeks ago!
Sat. 12/31/11 11:23am abby in france:

this is goooooooooooood.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:24am kat330:

@G: fancy mode, basic mode, still same pastel on pastel colors and very hard to read without text highlighting, which is a pain. Ah, well -- will just use ears for this show. Happy 2012 to all!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:25am BigJay:

Did jonnie say something silly? I can't read the mauve.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:26am jonnie:

Never said I didn't like the show. I love the music you play, would not miss your interviews but always wonder why at 1:00 PM on Saturdays I always think "that is not a nice guy". If you would force yourself to be positive and leave your kids at home I would pledge even more to your show than I usually do during fundraisers (which is quite a bit) Just thank heaven that I don't call in
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:27am Audience:

Tough room.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:28am Victor (baby):

Yes, we thank heaven.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:28am jonnie:

My problem is that I DO have some drinks in me. Sorry to be a jerk
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:28am Heaven:

You're welcome.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:29am Punch Bowl:

Why do people keep pooping in me?
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:30am paul:

Favorite interview: Emmitt Rhodes (pretty sure that was the one that was way out there.)
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:32am paul:

Cheer up, Punch Bowl. This is a big night for you.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:33am paul:

Robbie Fulks dance remix? I like it.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:34am James:

Agree with you on the Rhodes interview, paul. That was an eye-opener, especially on a Sat morning.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:34am Victor (baby):

This could be a Jimmy Buffet song. Is it?
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:35am Caryn:

Just got home from my last day at work. Starting the new year unemployed. But turn on WFMU, and have spent the last half hour singing along to almost every song, so thanks, Michael, for the great song selections so far!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:37am Robert:

But jon, Juniper is so well behaved, never intrusive.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:38am seang:

Hi Caryn from Finland!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:38am G:

Nearly everybody's work is down recently, Caryn. :-( I work for multiple places, so I hang on to what's still there while digging up replacements for whatever I'm down on.... Hope all goes well with your search!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:39am Caryn:

Hi Seang! Thanks, G!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:41am paul:

Caryn, I was unemployed this time last year and now have a very good job. And I'm what most people in management would consider ancient.
So, hang in there. As Graham Parker sang, Life Gets Better.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:41am frenchee:

Michael, I love the call-ins!

And this Joe Pernice cover is great. I'm summoning the courage to call in...cheers to Barbara for being the first female to brave the airwaves on the Michael Shelley show!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:41am jonnie:

Well maybe I need to abandon my plans to provide tough love to people I care about on this last day of the year. It's kind of a downer although it has worked out splendidly in the past. I always make things right at midnight.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:42am Clock Watcher:

The show ends before midnight, jonnie.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:43am paul:

Call me crazy, but I would kind of like to hear jonnie call in.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:44am Clock Watcher:

Let's you and him fight, eh paul :-)
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:45am paul:

frenchee, no props for me being the first caller?
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:45am James:

More Juniper in 2012!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:45am Robert:

Well now Michael is running up the score, no fair.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:46am paul:

I'm a lover, not a fighter. I just want to hear him first-hand.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:46am Clock Watcher:

so call, jonnie. you're not too drunk to press the right numbers, are you?
Sat. 12/31/11 11:47am Michael from the Left Coast:

Zombies made two full albums during their run and some stray singles--broke up before the release of Odessey and Oracle (their second album)
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:48am frenchee:

oh hellz yeah, props to Paul from Chicago/Florida for being first caller!
Brave man
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:49am paul:

Saw the Zombies and Love (with A. Lee about a year before he died). Both bands were incredible.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:49am jonnie:

I have been trying to call and I guess I am truly too drunk to dial. My four year old daughter will be phoning in any minute now.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:50am paul:

Thanks, frenchee :)
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:50am Clock Watcher:

jonnie's scared to say it to his face.

keep dialing, you just have to get the ten numbers right in the correct order once.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:52am paul:

Michael, you must have a "Herrrrrrrrre's Jonnie" sound clip.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:52am Clock Watcher:

from The Shining.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:53am paul:

Perfect.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:53am Clock Watcher:

lolz
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:54am frenchee:

I have grown to enjoy the Juniper segments, it took a while.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:54am paul:

This guy sounds like a Jerky Boy. Just the dialect, not the attitude.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:55am Clock Watcher:

they left "band of gold" vague to avoid possible AM radio censorship, and also so people could read anything portentous into it that they felt like.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:56am jonnie:

I am so drunk I though it was 11:56 PM. sorry everybody
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:56am gai8l:

IMHO Yes, poor naive Freda married a gay dude
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:56am Clock Watcher:

sheesh, he just gets better!
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:57am Caryn:

@Paul: hanging in there. It was just weird that today, at the end of the workday, my boss tells me that in January, I can apply to get my job back, except with reduced hours and reduced pay. They'll put in an open search for job candidates, and I'll be just one candidate among others to get back the job they just cut me from. The corporate logic is just kinda mindboggling.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:57am Clock Watcher:

this dahlmanns goes out to jonnie
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:58am paul:

Today's show has it all. Great music, phone calls, a drunk, friendly people, a little drama, and some interesting info (never knew about Freida's hubby).

A #1 show indeed.
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:58am Michael Shelley:

FOLKS: Check this out:
http://michaelshelley.net/2012/
  Sat. 12/31/11 11:59am jonnie:

also never tried to 'blackmail". I have been a faithful marathon donor to the station and to the show since time began. Just trying to offer an incentive for Michael to be a bit nicer in 2012.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:00pm paul:

Caryn, I've seen so much of that mindless corporate behavior that nothing surprises me any more. In the meantime, collect unemployment. You're entitled to it.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:00pm frenchee:

omg Caryn, that is horrible. Why they play you like that?
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:01pm Clock Watcher:

from the corporate angle, in relatively high-wage areas like the US labor is the largest cost input. when businesses worry about their profits going down or disappearing, labor is where they look to cut costs -- by reclassifying the same old work from a fulltime position with bennies to part time or contractor work with fewer expenses and commitments...
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:01pm frenchee:

It's horrible just the same.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:02pm Jasperodus:

Great list and greater artist, Wreckless Eric -- yay but had to spend 2 minutes trying to distinguish the yellow from the blue background! Almost as bad as this mauve and peach.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:02pm paul:

Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby "Guitar Man". That alone sounds worth a donation. Can we have a taste?
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:04pm Jasperodus:

Seconded, Paul!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:06pm Clock Watcher:

caller's on a train?
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:06pm Caryn:

@Clock watcher: funny thing is, I was already classified a part-time worker, so I can't see the point of going through the time and expense of a job search.
@Michael: premium looks awesome! Will have to see if I can squirrel away some money for a pledge. (already sending in money to WFMU every month, so I'll have to see if I can spare a couple more bucks)
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:06pm Clock Watcher:

about "band of gold" i always figured impotence of some sort
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:07pm frenchee:

she definitely said "tried before" at least once!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:11pm Clock Watcher:

@caryn: when i found my overall work/income level down in the past, i used the extra time to research what had changed in the field i'm in and apply to more places. it's annoying because that's unpaid work, but it often seems to lead to more income down the road. throw enough crap at the wall, and some sticks! :-( :-)
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:12pm santanu roy:

Hi Michael

  Sat. 12/31/11 12:13pm jonnie:

My daughter is calling in right now. please patch her into this call Michael
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:14pm Clock Watcher:

jonnie should call in and see if he can debate juniper. that would be gin vs. juniper i guess
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:14pm jonnie:

here's your reality MIchael!!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:14pm smallJ:

Beginning to see Jonnie's point...
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:15pm frenchee:

HA HA HA HA, gin vs. Juniper
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:15pm Clock Watcher:

"tried before" = he couldn't "do it", for whatever reason. A TRAGEDY! lol
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:16pm Michael Shelley:

Johnnie I'd love to talk to your daughter... and to SmallJ & anyone who doesn't like the show - please do not listen.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:16pm jonnie:

Vodka my friends. It was my four year old daughter who was going to call in to talk to Juniper but she chickened out.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:17pm frenchee:

folks, this is the best argument FOR premarital sex I've heard in a while
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:17pm Clock Watcher:

when this song came out in 1970, i was barely 10. this topic seemed so daring and mysterious. those grownups, what kind of crap are they getting up to!!!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:17pm Victor (baby):

This could be just a "Viagra" issue.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:18pm BigJay:

Love me like you tried before. This is from 1970, pre Viagra.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:18pm paul:

The dude was gay. Final answer.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:18pm jonnie:

OK, you got me, I'm a chicken. But I have NEVER upbraided music legends on the phone while interviewing them
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:19pm Clock Watcher:

"i'm a chicken" -- DINGDINGDINGDING
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:19pm Experience:

You don't sleep in separate rooms just because he can't get it up.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:19pm Clock Watcher:

@experience: if he was ashamed enough he might
Sat. 12/31/11 12:19pm Randy in NC:

Courtesy of wikipedia: The song tells a story of a recently married woman whose husband is incapable of loving her (even though he tried), resulting in the couple sleeping in separate rooms on their honeymoon, to her dismay. It would appear that the marriage ended in the husband's abandoning his bride, leaving her with no more than the titular 'band of gold'.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:19pm Caryn:

I can't decide if he was gay or impotent and deeply embarrassed about it.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:20pm O'bachmann:

I think someone didn't manage to "pray away the gay" of Frieda's hubby.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:20pm jonnie:

you should see what a wimp I am when I'm sober
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:20pm Experience:

This is daring and mysterious. Truly.
Sat. 12/31/11 12:21pm vic in colo:

The guy was in vietnam, had PTSD. Ya gotta put it in the context of the times
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:21pm Caryn:

@clock watcher: plenty of hooks already in the water, and just got a new vocational degree last month (decided to get qualified for an additional field so I have more job opportunities), so I'm hopeful I can find something. I think the main thing working against me are the couple of chronic illnesses I suffer from. Employers tend to be put off by that, even if the illnesses are totally under control.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:21pm jonnie:

Maybe someday I will develop the courage and guts to treat elderly music legends like they were annoying old kooks. You say I don't show enough respect??
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:21pm paul:

You've got to get Freda on the show for an interview. Let's settle this thing.
Hate to leave the show, but I've gotta run.
Happy New Year to all, even jonnie.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:21pm Victor (baby):

Gay AND impotent. Final answer!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:22pm Experience:

Are they allowed to ask if you have chronic illnesses?
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:22pm Clock Watcher:

there's really no solution, actually, because it's a song lyric and didn't actually happen in real life. so we can't get to a definitive answer if there isn't one in the lyrics themselves. unless the songwriter stated a solution in an interview or similar -- that might be light-shedding... :-)
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:23pm Clock Watcher:

there's some particular interview jonnie didn't like, and i don't remember anything like that on the show. o well.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:25pm frenchee:

bye Paul, happy new year!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:26pm jonnie:

all the interviews, just general annoyance, if they are late to the phone or mildly curse by mistake. If I had accomplished some of the great art these legends have I would like a little more ass kissing
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:27pm Moammar:

Slightly off topic, but can you make hoppin' john with a neckbone instead of a hock?
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:28pm Caryn:

Actually, frenchee, I always consider this clip (couldn't quickly find a better version of it, sorry) to be proof that premarital sex and other activities are actually a good idea, for training if for nothing else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=U-SRcCGsBbc&NR=1
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:28pm Clock Watcher:

jonnie, it's freeform. let dj's make their own choices. you seem to want everyone to do what you would do if you did it, but you *don't* do it. not getting it....
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:29pm Michael Shelley:

I make hoppin' john with fake bacon - and it's great.
http://www.google.com/url?source=imglanding&ct=img&q=http://www.altmeat.com/pics/misc/morningstar_bacon_box.jpg&sa=X&ei=Ikv_TpK4JJObtwem3o3QBg&ved=0CAwQ8wc&usg=AFQjCNGf1xoJJ4O-G2mHyGIoouTFJdzhIQ
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:29pm jonnie:

Happy New Year! Sorry to be a crank. I resolve never to post to the playlist again!!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:30pm Experience:

That's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen on youtube. That is saying something.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:31pm Jonnie Hater:

Hey Jonnie, you got one thing right - you ARE a jerk! please DONT have a happy new year
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:32pm Caryn:

@Experience: first saw that clip on Conan, and Andy Richter had it right when he said that they look like they're passing a live mice from mouth to mouth... Ugh! Seriously, practice kissing, people!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:33pm Michael Shelley:

Johnnie is entitled to his opinion - and I wish him a happy new year!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:34pm Clock Watcher:

happy ny to michael and all the listeners!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:35pm Not Jonnie:

Jonnie, must be tough for kids to have to deal wit ha drunk dad all the time. pretty sad/pathetic.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:36pm Caryn:

@Michael: have a point about the rock star thing. Also, there was a time when "brain surgeon" was great in and of itself. Why the need to label them rock stars to make them sound cool? Brain surgeon is cool on its own. Which brings me to another Youtube clip (man, I'm just rolling these out today): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THNPmhBl-8I
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:41pm Ted:

Hello Clark Marty!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:42pm clarke:

ted??? is that YOU???
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:43pm Ted:

We both had the misfortune to work with Charlie Pickett.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:44pm da king:

best version of 'dancing in the moonlight' ever
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:45pm Caryn:

After the kind of show we've had, I'm almost expecting Michael to end the show by playing "Band of Gold" again...
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:45pm clarke:

ha ha, i had good times MOST of my time with Charlie Pickett -- then there's the 'other'
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:46pm Ted:

Ack! I got your question wrong. It's hard to read the light red/pink on yellow.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:47pm clarke:

i'm NOT neil sedaka!!! but happy new year everyone!!
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:47pm Ted:

Ha Ha. You know, people who didn't know those guys thought Charlie was the one on drugs.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:49pm jonnie:

Breaking my resolution. Thanks for the intervention. New resolutions, listen to the radio show of the caller who brings his kid to the shop and to NEVER review television programs I have never seen. Happy New Years Michael and to all your listeners who can't take a little joke
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:49pm clarke:

true, ted. unfortunately, charlie was a TOTAL enabler, though -- and i just had to move on from all of that
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:49pm Clock Watcher:

hilarious
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:50pm da king:

i too wish i'd never met Buble
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:50pm Caryn:

The thing I like about New Year's Eve is that over here that always means there's a buttload of music on tv. For instance, right now, jazz on one channel, classical on another. In an hour, "The Last Waltz" starts, followed by Adele's Albert Hall Concert, followed by a Motown concert (Smokey Robinson and others). And if I'm still up after that, they're showing "Alice's Restaurant". Not to mention the 5 music documentaries being shown at the same time as these on other channels.
  Sat. 12/31/11 12:50pm jonnie:

I've seen Neil Sedaka sit in at a piano bar in Fire Island. Much more entertaining than the drag queens.

OK, Freda didn't write it, it's a Holland-Dozier-Holland song she turned down at first, thinking it was better suited to a younger singer. It was a hit! And apropos of 'Super Sounds of the '70s' I remember Natalie Merchant introducing it around '93 onstage with 10,000 Maniacs, saying that her parents had one of those K-Tel records and this was her favorite song on it. Natalie belted it out. Great song. The mystery helps make it great.
