Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from November 1, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:04pm
paula pc:

great start, Brian!! nice pickmeup
  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Brian!
What else can I say--La Dusseldorf, any way I look at it.
  3:07pm
bill:

I get confused about which is the artist name and which the song name on an ipod. Not a problem with La Dusseldorf!
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's for sure, bill!
ARTHUR BROWN!!! I'm a fan of his Crazy World--have that on vinyl. Besides the ubiquitous "Fire", check out its 2-minute intro on the album, and his cover of "I Put A Spell On You".
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Damn! The Arthur Brown post had a math answer of 668! Its been awhile since my last 666, if only that had come up while posting about Arthur Brown!!
  3:10pm
BSI:

Kingdom Come stuff re-issued? Hell's donkeys... Need the "Journey" LP again if it kills me...
  3:11pm
Nick Sakes:

Little Dog!
  3:12pm
slugluv1313:

MEOW!!!!!!
  3:12pm
Cecile:

BSI, I think you have to post the link to Cheeto again...
  3:12pm
Cheri Pi:

Why is my cat on the radio= Will someone please turn on the drip so he can stop his infernal meowing!!!???
  3:13pm
Wikipedia:

Catgut: "Usually sheep or goat intestines are used, but it is occasionally made from the intestines of cattle,[4] hogs, horses, mules, or donkeys.[citation needed] While the name contains the morpheme "cat", strings have never been made from the guts of cats."
  3:13pm
Wikipedia:

"The word catgut may have been an abbreviation of the word "cattlegut". Alternatively, it may have derived by folk etymology from kitgut or kitstring -- the word kit, meaning fiddle, having at some point been confused with the word kit for little cat."
  3:14pm
Terry is cooking:

Mad cat
  3:14pm
bill:

So Cheri Pi, have you listened to the Exile 7" yet?
  3:15pm
Cheri Pi:

No not yet silly!
  3:15pm
dc pat:

I had to look that up recently Wiki cuz the idea was bothering me...
  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dc pat: For some things animal intestines are still used, apparently.
  3:19pm
dc pat:

I personally use synthetic strings on my racket and Ernie Balls on my Telecaster.
  3:20pm
Drill Sergeant:

Gut it up, you maggots!
  3:20pm
Ernie's Balls:

damn!
  3:27pm
pat's telecaster:

You think you have it bad!..
  3:29pm
lloyd pack:

bloody hell, you woke me up brian! - - - I dreamt i was in an ethereal cave and a bunch of guitar playing people came down a pothole and started playing riock
  3:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Riocking outt!!!
  3:30pm
lloyd pack:

'riock' is short for riotous rock
  3:31pm
dc pat:

I plan on riocking out when I get home on my ball-laden guitar.
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ri-ock then? I was reading it as Ree-ock.

@dc pat: Play a pair - Grow a pair! A message from the Natural Strings Association.
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

jiggly!
  3:34pm
dc pat:

at least my guitar has balls...
  3:36pm
dc pat:

JEEzus, Low Brau riocks!
  3:37pm
Ryan M.:

play some Oasis!!
  3:40pm
Carmichael:

Hi BT and people rockin' out. CD Pat, have you tried DR strings? I sure love 'em.
  3:40pm
dc pat:

so what is it again? black metal = cookie monster and death metal = donald duck?
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

80s synths and wrestling pop! What's not to like?
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dc pat: I thought Cookie Monster = death metal. Black metal would be...higher pitched, less coherent Huey/Dewey/Louie maybe?
  3:44pm
dc pat:

Carm: I'm way to old to be switching strings now...and too sloppy in my guit playing to buy the expensive strings. I use to change my strings before every gig or I was sure to break one...
  3:44pm
dc pat:

ok, thanks Matt..
  3:51pm
dc pat:

YES! Just picked up free tickets to Scratch Acid...
  3:54pm
Mike East:

Isn't it Shock and Awe-vember now?
  3:56pm
Drill Sergeant:

@Mike: It's NO!vember.
  3:57pm
dc pat:

it's Riockvember.
  4:00pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

in OH it's "NO ON ISSUE 2 VEMBER", repealing the Governor's overstretch on cancelling public workers' unions.
  4:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Defeat that, and rub his nose in it!
  4:05pm
Martha:

Enjoying the show here in Laos - so weird -
  4:06pm
BT:

Hey Martha, glad you are checkin in. Hope you had a safe trip!
  4:06pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

haven't seen any "Yes on 2" yard signs yet, and I heard that no station is willing to run advertisements for it because everyone's so damned outraged!
  4:07pm
Letha:

Hey BT! Thanks for the play - You know it's for you! LOVE!
  4:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: That's what I've been hearing, at least popular support is running against it.
  4:08pm
Ike:

I love Laos -- been to Luang Prabang? I really want to go back there again.
  4:08pm
r i s k y:

Nice meeting you this weekend! Enjoying the sounds!
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Martha: How's it going? I've been to Laos! technically. I was in Thailand last year and that was one of those side trips to the free trade areas; you pay the guards Thai money, and don't get a passport stamp.
  4:10pm
paula pc:

@Martha -- Glad all is well!!
  4:13pm
obvious punster:

hey, hope your trip isn't too "Laos-y"! Er, well, I guess I hope it is?
  4:14pm
Martha:

Here for work - great place, though changed a bit since I was here 4 years ago - still settling in w/ the jet lag (not so good at that part). But most importantly, support freeform radio!
  4:14pm
Van in Dallas:

Love Thailand. Called the Land of Smiles for very good reason.
  4:14pm
Carmichael:

Well I never been to Laos,
But I kinda like the music.
  4:14pm
Martha:

And the Renderers -
  4:16pm
Cecile:

Ah! I haven't heard the Lighthouse keepers in forever.
Brian, the new Bats album is excellent. I DL'd it from Flying Nun in NZ. Pretty sweet.
  4:20pm
dw:

Thank you, Brian!
  4:28pm
BT:

Havent heard that Bats yet, I'll have to bug FN for one for the station. Apparently Nov 15th there will be a Flying Nun tribute show in NYC for their 30th anniversary with local bands playing FN covers?
  4:29pm
Cecile:

That sounds really cool, Brian.
  4:39pm
dom:

this is incredible!
  4:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Bara Sanabo Bara" is particularly incredible! Which culture is this from?
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nigeria! Thanks Brian.

As for this Travesti, Italian synth "Roadhouse Blues"? ;)
  4:56pm
dom:

  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's what I want to be.
  5:07pm

  5:19pm
Martha:

Thanks!
  5:24pm
Ryan M.:

eff yes...UOoA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5:25pm
Ike:

Isn't it about 5 a.m. there, Martha? Didn't take any melatonin? If you're in the capital and you get some free time then I recommend going across to Nong Khai, Thailand, or take the three-hour bus ride to Vang Viang which is gorgeous. At this time of year, it's not overrun by drunken Brits, either.
  5:26pm
Carmichael:

They were/are kind of a collective, if I recall correctly. Seymour Glass is involved as well.
  5:27pm
AbeSomething:

I'm not finding any info on "Destination Cuervo" online. Any help? I want that 7"!!
  5:30pm
Cecile:

He's not Blind Willie Johnson, either.
  5:30pm
Martha:

Listen to the music!
  5:32pm
