  3:34pm

i didn't throw it! no way! but in hindsight i see what i might have done to win. on the other hand, how many of you would have stayed tuned in for three hours of prince and temptations hit singles?

Wild Neil:

@Kurt-
Hi! I was wondering if the purpose or at least one application of Raga day was in support of OWS or perhaps OTW (Occupy The World?)...Is this movement about the PEOPLE of the world tired of being occupied (pun intended) with issues of survival in a greedy fuedalist corporatacracy? Just wondering, anybody else have any idea or know?
  3:37pm
das:

I still think you could've taken it if they would have accepted the 'songs that use numbers or letters instead of words" category
  3:37pm
Ike:

Prince hit singles? Yeah, I'd've stayed tuned in for those. Temptations hits, NO, never -- sick of those -- but I was surprised at how much I liked some of their groovier lesser-known tracks.

Sincerity?!? Really? I agree with Still B/P.
  3:37pm
Wild Neil:

This is one heavy-ass song!!
  3:38pm
BodegaMan:

can't I pledge and have you send me a bill? I thought that was better for the station instead of the credit card fees and such..
  3:39pm
das:

I meant to say whut BodegaMan said.
  3:40pm
Wild Neil:

I am both sincere AND naive....
  3:43pm
DJ KG:

trying to get an answer for you guys re: paying later. i'm not sure.
  3:44pm
das:

I'd like to hear this song played at 45.
  3:46pm
Wild Neil:

@DAS
That would be a BUMPIN metal dance song....
  3:46pm
fido:

ken mentioned during the "state of the station" 9 days ago something like the fact that 35% of non-credit-card only-on-paper pledges never get paid, which screws up planning how to cover monthly station expenses during the year.
  3:48pm
Ike:

Yeah, Fido -- I previously figured the 3% (?) credit card fee made checks preferable, but on a pure math level, 35% check mail-in is much worse. Even if it were actually just 10%, that's still worse. That's how NPR plays it: They'd rather have a 100% chance of having the money NOW, even with 3% deducted. Not that FMU should necessarily emulate NPR, but they ARE masters of hoovering up listeners' cash.
  3:50pm
Van in Dallas:

I believe it was Doug (Give the Drummer) who said that a pledge now works just fine...$$$ can be sent in later. I don't swear by that, but I'm pretty sure that was what he told us...
  3:53pm
paula pc:

Kurt - Seven. Thebes. You RULE. Thank you. And another pledge question -- can we sprinkle pledges a-la the Marathon and then they get aggregated at the end of Awetober? Should we indicate on the form that that is what we're doing? thank you...
  3:54pm
fido:

normal c/c fee is 5%, that's why government entities make you pay a 5% "convenience fee" when paying taxes by c/c. they won't look at the 5% as overhead, like stores do; they want the full amount you owe, period. so they shift the c/c processing fee onto you.
  3:54pm
DJ KG:

paulapc - yes, sprinkle away! we'll amalgamate at the end. and thanks!
  3:55pm
das:

paypal is a good.
(I can't figure out how to form this sentence. Sorry)
  3:56pm
michelle:

I was wondering the same thing as paula pc and was sprinkling in hope. Thanks for the assurance.
  3:57pm
Carmichael:

My "insta-pledges" were insta-billed to my card, as I expected. As individual transactions. I suppose you could mail a check in, or use a credit card instead of a debit card. Or hold up a bank and walk the cash over to the station. Lots of options.
  4:01pm
Van in Dallas:

You're okay KG, you didn't say it, you whispered. No voice, no foul
  4:02pm
Carmichael:

You were almost a minute late with the station ID, Kurt. Could this be why the station is in the hole? FCC fines?
  4:03pm
Van in Dallas:

Actually, since your tenant at WFMU canceled AFTER this whole silent support thingy started, ya'll ought to be allowed to go in to full vocal beg mode now
  4:06pm
das:

Satan will help
  4:07pm
moose:

just thundered here
  4:07pm
fido:

the tenant is a branch office of a realty company. they are closing or moving their jersey city office, which was on the ground floor.
  4:09pm
Van in Dallas:

Ah, didn't know that. But supposedly that's another $82k/yr to make up I think it was. That really hurts...
  4:12pm
fido:

if you search the www for FMU's actual street address, you'll find the realty office. their website treats them as still open. i am guessing the lease is not being renewed, but there is no way to guess what the upcoming terminal date would be. the space would probably rent for less nowadays than the realty office agreed to pay back in better real estate times, prior to 2008.
  4:14pm
DJ KG:

sorry - credit cards and paypal are the only options this time around. but as others are noting here, we do need an influx right about now.
  4:19pm
das:

What if you guys opened a dildo store in the newly vacated office? That could help fill a few holes in your budget, no pun intended.
  4:19pm
BSI:

wow, hey. This piece is the bee's knees.
This would be Navrattan Korma, yes? The curry theme continues. Me likey.
  4:20pm
DJ KG:

we might need someone to come in and manage the operation, das.
  4:21pm
DJ KG:

bsi - yup
  4:22pm
andymorphic:

its la monte younges birthday....he is pretty ragaesque
  4:23pm
Ike:

Srsly, somebody else suggested a bar. I bet that could be profitable even after you pay the bartenders. But maybe you can't get zoning for that. So dildos are another good option. Maybe musical dildos? Buddha Dildos instead of Buddha Boxes?
  4:24pm
das:

Lamonte is still kicking? Wow!
  4:25pm
das:

Now your thinking. A musical dildo bar...
  4:30pm
andymorphic:

he's 78
  4:33pm
fido:

making money with a business is a lot harder than it looks if you haven't actually tried it yourself. it's actually pretty easy to lose a lot of money if you calculate wrong or guess wrong. most startups fail. a lot of research can help, but is not a guarantee. being a commercial landlord is actually a relatively safer business, as long as you can get more in rent than you have in landlord expenses. (note the subtle OWS references here)
  4:43pm
Ike:

Good point re: most start-ups failing. (N/s what you're implying politically, but I've had enough politics for this week.)
  4:45pm
northguineahills:

Haven't heard this Fahey, although I've heard others like it.
  4:45pm
das:

If you ever need help losing money I hope you'll come to me.
  4:49pm
das:

Any idea if that's a 6-string or what he's playing?
  4:51pm
DJ KG:

pretty sure he plays a 6-string acoustic lap steel (or "hawaiian steel")
  4:52pm
Marmalade Kitty:

good question! what is he playing?
  4:53pm
slab:

why do hotdogs cost so much more per pound than an actual cut of good meat? Much of the time you can get a good steak per pound for less or the same price as a 16oz package of hotdogs.
  4:53pm
Marmalade Kitty:

indian slide guitar!
  4:58pm
das:

I've never seen a package of steaks for 99 cents
  5:03pm
Marmalade Kitty:

there is rarely any dog in a hotdog mostly mechanically recovered chicken feet and stuff
  5:07pm
Cecile:

Is that a Prophet's Song loop?
  5:09pm
DJ KG:

the loop is from the wfmu "ruinning in place" locked groove lp. no idea what the source is. sorry.
  5:10pm
Cecile:

where are you shopping, slab?
Even at my local schmancy butcher, steak is way more expensive than the sausage
they make in house.
I'll bet it's from Queen's Prophet Song. There's that whole bit where they go "and now I know" over and over again.
  5:11pm
Marmalade Kitty:

did you know that all of us will take our turn, in the life cycle, as farm livestock and ultimately produce? as sure as we turn to dust..
  5:13pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

I'm enjoying the raga afternoon.
  5:15pm
slab:

i am talking about the better quality hotdogs made from all beef or pork and beef and often have natural casings. those are not made from the scraps but select cuts of meat, though with more fat in than meat. but still these hotdogs cost about as much per pound as a NY strip. then if you are talking about the cheaper chicken hotdogs those cost more than if you bought actual chicken meat by the pound. you can often get whole roasting chickens for 99 cents a pound or the most couple of bucks a pound. and I rarely see a package of the cheapest hotdogs costing less $1.50. usually over $2.
  5:16pm
DJ KG:

@marmalade, punctuation smile
  5:16pm
Cecile:

Well, these are great hotdogs, and they are about $4-5 bucks a pound less than NY Strip. Then again, I'm in the midwest.
  5:17pm
Cecile:

But yes, good chicken on sale is a better deal than hotdogs. It goes a long way.
  5:22pm
DJ KG:

am i wrong to find irony in the discussion of meat prices during a raga show ironic? it reminds me of the time i found myself at a sushi reception in the baltimore aquarium. (which is an amazing aquarium, btw)
  5:23pm
DJ KG:

double ironic!
  5:23pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

I want some curry.
  5:24pm
DJ KG:

i didn't get my pig heads order last weekend because it was too warm. needs to stay below 50 degrees to slaughter pigs.
  5:38pm
DJ KG:

one more pledge before the end of my show would make me happy!
  5:40pm
Mike East:

Is this from the Village Vanguard? This is my go to Coltrane collection
  5:41pm
Marmalade Kitty:

so a small life reprieve for mr & mrs pig..
  5:42pm
DJ KG:

  5:47pm
Mike East:

aha, I see. The box set I have is Complete 1961 Village Vanguard recordings.
  5:48pm
DJ KG:

ah, yeah, that makes sense.

the vanguards are the best trane for sure!
  5:50pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Wait, this isn't a raga.
  5:50pm
Mike East:

I just put this Husker Du track on a mixtape with a "Singles and B Sides" theme....in fact, I think I was singing it yesterday (in my head)
  5:50pm
DJ KG:

it isn't?
  5:51pm
