Rolando Alexandre: Timbila from Mozambique

Rolando Alexandre of the National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique introduces and performs several pieces on the mbila (timbila in plural), a type of xylophone that is the definitive musical instrument for the Chopi people of southern Mozambique. Plus recordings of timbila orchestras and timbila in combination with other instruments.

Rolando and other members of the National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique recently appeared at the Lincoln Center Festival in collaboration with the performance group Urban Bush Women in a multimedia show called Shadow's Child They will be joined by the full National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique and take the show on tour around the U.S. later this year.  There will be performances at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Victoria Theatre in Newark NJ, November 22-24, 2002.
