A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Tue. 8/23/11 9:17am Adrian in rainy London:

Cool? It's parky in London today. Flood warnings! Helps to stop the riots, I suppose, unless people loot the outdoor shops for wellington boots.
  Tue. 8/23/11 9:18am Scotland Yard:

hooligans looting boots = welligans
Tue. 8/23/11 9:20am Adrian in rainy London:

Ha ha! Apparently, someone turned up with a van and was looting a hifi/electrical store near me. While he was inside nabbing more TVs, someone drove off in his van!
  Tue. 8/23/11 9:20am trouble:

bonjour pierre! we all missed you, hope you did si\omething fab. la plage in Rhode Island was wonderful but it seems long ago, instead of only 3 weeks past. Do google more nina bovasso: a wonderful and great artist and wfmu lover

  Tue. 8/23/11 9:47am moose:

i regularly have to switch seats or even cars on the path train because of terrible perfumes, mostly on young men, i blame AXE and its similar friends
  Tue. 8/23/11 9:50am pierre:

Rhode Island sounds so nice to me right now…
  Tue. 8/23/11 9:50am Wild Neil:

Trouble, what is the best Sun Ra album to start me off? The most accessible Sun Ra?
  Tue. 8/23/11 9:54am BSI:

Most accessible (yet thoroughly awesome) Sun Ra? Lanquidity maybe?
Tue. 8/23/11 10:00am pgw in mntclr:

"Lanquidity" is pretty fantastic and not too out
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:01am Jennique:

Happy late August Trouble! Went for a night swim (7-8pm) at the Central Park outdoor pool last night. So lovely. HIGHLY recommend using outdoor pools before the weather turns.
Tue. 8/23/11 10:01am fred von helsing:

  Tue. 8/23/11 10:02am ffrr:

The thing with Ra is that the whole aura/experience of the live shows can never be captured on recordings. You really needed to be there, unfortunately no more. He used to sell unlabeled vinyl bootlegs at shows that came close, with sidelong jams directly from outer space.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:02am trouble:

i adore "sound of joy" and "the singles". very old school vibe but with the beat and sound that sums up sun ra in a lot of ways, very beautiful, not noisy
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:05am moose:

where's the pool in CP? as a JC,NJ resident (and carless) my public pool options are crummy.
great show by the way - rock it!
Tue. 8/23/11 10:07am pgw in mntclr:

also pretty fantastic: Sheila Cronin's story about Sun Ra on the "Looking for a Thrill" dvd
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:07am healey:

these are fun too http://tinyurl.com/3no2fkc
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:08am trouble:

moose have you gone to the pershing pool? i dig it in a very old school pool way. old people or lots of kids screaming in the free swim area, depends on the time of day
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:09am Stu:

Soulful Tuesday !
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:09am Jennique:

Love the booty bumpin tunes!
@moose:The pool in CP is up in the NE corner. Take the BC train to 110 Street to get there (a lovely 10 minute walk). It's free! Best deal in the city. Nice and empty at that late hour.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:13am trouble:

hey stu! hey jennique!
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:14am moose:

thanks all

I made my entry to the sound of birdsong. A good sign, I think.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:23am BSI:

Rabid Don Cherry completist here, and this one has eluded me thus far. Veddy nice.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:27am trouble:

the world of blogs delivered this to our door...
Tue. 8/23/11 10:30am Brian in UK:

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring, he went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up in the morning. At least he's not going to maintain, a smell that will contaminate the train. Press the button and inhale the vapour, let everyone enjoy your eyewatering caper.

Priceless links as ever, trouble.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:30am hamburger:

hello - weird (backmasking?) neatness goin on..
Tue. 8/23/11 10:31am aaron in chicago:

for a second I thought diane's show was starting early
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:33am kwhitehead:

Just wondering who's responsible for all the entertaining WFMU tweets that I get everyday?
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:34am trouble:

can't help you there kwitehead. i barely have time to breathe these days, not on twitter...should i be?
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:38am kwhitehead:

It depends. I thought I'd give it a whirl and I really like it. It's a great way to find out about things you didn't know you cared about, if that makes sense.

My 10 year old son is all over it as well, talking with his skater buddies.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:43am moose:

i won't go near the twitter or facebook for fear of being overwhelmed
plus the eternal existence of every stupid thing i say makes me nervous
anyway i'm making my exit - cheers gang
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:45am pierre:

some things can help you with twitter, it is a matter of choosing the people you follow.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:47am Priscilla:

The Red Hook pool is huge and fabulous, especially the early session (11-2:45). Also, as a thematic confluence, I saw Sun Ra perform at the Astoria public pool once!
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:47am βrian:

Twitter was pretty useful during the first round of Wisconsin protests. Facebook I will not touch.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:52am kwhitehead:

Reading that book now. He does come off a bit hypocritcal.

I concur Trouble. I am from the post-punk generation and still love it more than ever.

I follow him on Twitter, btw.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:53am hamburger:

(funny lil painting I thought I'd share - http://bit.ly/oqKC3s)
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:53am Andrew:

Awesome idea, Trouble!
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:55am Andrew:

Daniel J. Levitin, in "This Is Your Brain on Music," actually says that the human brain is hardwired to make the music it listens to in the teenage-to-early-twenties years VERY important, and base later judgments on that listening.
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:56am Jennique:

"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture"
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:57am hamburger:

I can dance a mean frank lloyd wright :) j/k
  Tue. 8/23/11 10:59am trouble:

oooh since i grew up listening to tom jones that makes no sense, wink wink
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:00am PAS Music:

This is some serious reverse mind control technique.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:01am Andrew:

Maybe you have a faulty brain. :)
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:02am PAS Music:

ZOUNDS!!! They just released a new cd.
Tue. 8/23/11 11:03am Brian in UK:

Jennique, may I mark your dance card for the Sir Norman Foster Waltz? Dancing up the escalators of Canary Wharf tube station on a sunny late summer evening.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:06am maja:

He Trouble, did you already say what artist this week made the drawing?( to lazy to read all the way back)
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:07am trouble:

yes maja, it is my fine friend nina bovasso
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:09am ?:

@kwhitehead: Ken does the wfmu twitter feed (according to his playlist page). He also has his own twitter account.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:10am kwhitehead:

Thanks mystery person!
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:12am Jennique:

I'd be honoured to have that dance Brian in UK. Perhaps we could also do the two-step up the lobby steps of the main library in New York City? http://sallanscorner.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/lobby.jpg
Tue. 8/23/11 11:16am Brian in UK:

You would honour me greatly.
We will have to be quick the speed that libraries are disappearing over here at present.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:18am erella:

Hi Trouble, good morning all. I love Scritti Politti so much. Did I tell you I saw them play here in toronto in maybe 2008. There were fewer than 20 people in the audience. I brought my friend (wonderful singer) Mary Margaret Ohara with me. Surreal. I was glad the music blew her mind as it always did for me.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:20am trouble:

hello erella! that is a crazy scritti politti tale
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:22am maja:

ooh those works by Nina Bossova! I didn't knew her, but now i do!
bow deep, thank you you are the best!
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:22am Jennique:

Brain - The libraries are closing rapidly here in NYC as well. It makes no sense to me.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:24am Wild Neil:

The LAST thing the out of control industrial-corporatcracy wants is a well-informed public. Ask Dwight D. Eisenhower...The Soviet Union did this actively...
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:25am Parq:

Decades later, I still love this Modettes record and I still can't make out a word she's saying without looking up the lyrics. I should do one of those translation videos where the "lyrics" are what it phonetically sounds like to me.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:27am Parq:

If they release a new edition, maybe I'll do a Hitler Meme video in which he's told that the new ed. doesn't have a lyric sheet. ("Everybody who isn't old enough to remember the first Delta 5 single leave the room now.")
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:29am Jennique:

Parq - that is a great idea! Phonetic lyrics would be really funny. The song "The Israelites" comes to mind for me.
Tue. 8/23/11 11:31am pgw in mntclr:

well hello, Miss Gentry
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:32am erella:

WHen I was a teenager I went to a small french village and saw a band that learned all the disco hits phonetically. My favourite was "Gedddown anboogie" (get down and boogie)
Tue. 8/23/11 11:33am moose posting from away:

Mary Margaret O'Hara is FANTASTIC! neat
Tue. 8/23/11 11:39am moose posting from away:

(that was aimed at erella)
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:43am pierre:

we (a friend and i) played at a festival (playing some records) with Kumisolo, she was very nice.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:44am trouble:

cool, does she live in france, pierre? i so love that track, have yet to hear any thing else by her
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:45am Wild Neil:

Libraries are consolidating and closing here in Buffalo, New York area as well.
Tue. 8/23/11 11:51am pgw in mntclr:

this mia doi todd song sounds like sandy denny singing in spanish over an alice coltrane album w/ a helping of fuzz guitar. very cool.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:51am PAS Music:

Great show today! You reminded me I need a copy of the Mo Dettes!
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:53am v k:

kudos on another wonderful program
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:54am herb:

mash-ups are fun - but didn't SIMON REYNOLDS point out how derivative they are? (ohmigod, this "day o tripper" is derived from other actual songs!!??)
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:57am pierre:

i know that she studied in Paris (cinema) now i think she's back in Japan, although she (apparently) come here (in Paris) quite often.

Her music has always this childish (as in "good, funny, laid back" kind of music ) touch, she has made a cover of Mr Tambourine Man that you could check/find easily.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:58am Parq:

Miss Trouble, this set is really something special.
  Tue. 8/23/11 11:59am trouble:

thanks for the fun my little pigeons. your homework is to begin to read simon reynolds retromania, gulp i sure hope my library has it!
  Tue. 8/23/11 12:00pm yayson:

this tulips is great right now
