i was spending quality time (2 weeks) in "the Gers" which is near Toulouse (like that i know you know what i'm talking about). And now i'm back doing boring stuff for food and shelter.

Well my dogs. It's a long story, but the short of it is. Woman gets gifted 3 ducks on the canal. Secures them poorly in a heavily dog trafficked public canal-side area which is not a farm. Ducks proceed to disappear slowly from other dogs. Woman never bothers to secure them properly. Then on Saturday one of my dogs knocked over the cage (it was the equivalent of an upside down cardboard box) and bit the last duck. I was really sorry about it, but pointed out that no one expects ducks to be kept on the canal, that she'd lost two already and still never took proper care. She left, angry canal boat neighbour man angrily approaches me this morning saying that I had to pay for the ducks repair. I apologised for the travesty and provided the same argument. Situation escalated. Argument ensued. Man got shirty. I walked away. I don't know... should I pay for someone else's poor animal care? I do feel for the ducks, but if they were my ducks and I lost one I would've made sure as hell that it wouldn't happen again. Opinions?

Welcome back Pierre! I'm in the midst of a pretty big work/life change - after 20 years of working in I.T. I'm transferring over to a video production group within the company I work for. They carved out a position for me (and my mad computer skillz) and I am totally jazzed!

And big up to Isa GT for the new recruits/conscripts!

@Nathan - might want to check with your vet. If your dog has now had a taste for blood there might be some psychological side affects...

@Nathan - a friend had a similar situation with some chickens. Their neighbor sued, claiming the chickens were pets (they lived inside the guys house) and some small monetary compensation was made

@Dave They've already got a natural taste for blood, they're both hunting dogs (whippet & greyhound). I occasionally have to dispose of an fatally injured squirrel in the park. Par for the course. But they've NEVER attacked another dog or human for that matter, they're peaceful, unless it's small, fluffy and runs.

@Dave It's not like they went into someone's house... these ducks were being kept on a public pathway in what's essentially a park, not a farm, not someone's private land... in the chicken's case I would find the dog owner at fault.

@Hamburger - I might pay for half the damage as I do feel half 'responsible' and the man did threaten my continued security on the canal (which I use quite a bit), though I can handle him there are a couple of his mates that are a bit more gnarly. So there is that factor.

@hamburger Well no one expects ducks in that sort of situation. That's the whole point, it's not a farm. It's a park. If they were dog aggressive, I would totally muzzle them. But I mean come on pet DUCKS? Any dog is going to have a go.
