Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from August 9, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Psychic Paramount  Live in the WFMU Studio   Favoriting engineered by Ernie Indradat and Ruaraidh Sanachan    Hard to believe Psychic Paramount have been around for ten years already, coming up out of the ashes of the late great Laddio Bolocko. Both on record and live, PP swerve between brutality and bliss: layers of textural distorto guitar action and color, throttling, mathy percussive pummel recalling great moments of This Heat gone into total in-the-red Japanese psych mode. Add Robert Fripp-like loops building and dismantling the songs themselves in bulldozer style, and you've got the makings of one killer progressive rock unit. Live today with Brian! Lineup: Drew St. Ivany (guitar), Ben Armstrong (bass), Jeff Conaway (drums). Tracks today: Intro/SP/DDB/Ex-Visitations/Gamelan. This set is downloadble here via the Free Music Archive. More info at the band's site. Thanks PP, Ernie, Ruaraidh, and No Quarter Mike!    2:05:16 (Pop-up)

Listener comments!

  3:03pm
Aaron Dilloway:

Nice way to start off Brian!
  3:04pm
Aaron Dilloway:

RIP
  3:05pm
Cheri Pi:

Greetings.
  3:05pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Hey BT.
  3:05pm
hubba:

hello everybody
  3:07pm
BT:

hey peops, greetings and salutations. Hey Dillo, congrats on papa-dom!
  3:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Brian.
So this is the now-departed Herr Schnitzler? First time hearing him sadly--this was probably quite experimental.
  3:12pm
Aaron Dilloway:

Thx BT!
  3:16pm
Cheri Pi:

I finally got my BT T-shirt, Gonna wear it the Men tonight.
  3:17pm
J J:

This is the kind of record I like to buy; sounds good at any speed.
  3:21pm
Lord Grenville:

Blau, Purple Foam
  3:29pm
glenn:

i've been enjoying my b.t. shirt for ages.
  3:30pm
Lord Grenville:

is this what happens when a small skirmish replete with Monday Bombs---- appears in an unused creakycrack closet till you manage to shut the damn dooro again /////all the way...this time
  3:32pm
Cheri Pi:

My swag was inexplicably delayed!!! Finally got it all this weekend, rolled in it like I was rich.
  3:36pm
glenn:

interesting version of one of my fave kinks tunes.
  3:37pm
Cheri Pi:

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! This is my jam.
  3:37pm
Aaron Dilloway:

Now we talkin Turner!
  3:38pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I never cared much for ZZ Top when I was in my classic rock years--but now when I hear them I get it.
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

WOW--wondering if this was April Wine or someone--nope! Not North of the Border, almost South of the Border! Didn't realize ZZ Top once had a sound like this!
  3:41pm
ben drinken:

zz top was great first album or two then they got all commercial and with that dumb car and the videos. did you know that the guy without the beard his last name is beard.
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I liked that one, and anything that's Blues-based they play the crap out of. I still don't like "Cheap Sunglasses" for example, but they have some of the hardest Blues rock of all time.
  3:41pm
glenn:

i'll say it again - april wine is very underappreciated.
  3:42pm
glenn:

the pre zz top moving sidewalks stuff is great texas psychedelia.
  3:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

@ Matt--I was singing that one to my daughter last week when she put on a pair of...
  3:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Ha ha, any other products cause you to break into song? :)
  3:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

WOOOOO FUCK YEAH!
It's been a while since you last pulled out this BT classic!
  3:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

shit dude what DOESN'T make me break out into song? my wife says I'm very predictable.
  3:49pm
Robert Palmer:

@DCE: For me as well, breaking into song is Simply...
  3:51pm
ben drinken:

have been wearing the Brian Turner wfmu t-shirt. have been wearing it two or three nights in a row now. have been putting it on late evening after working on prjects and a shower. so it's not like it has seen much action in the three days.
  3:53pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ben, I wear one pair of pants or shorts for a week. I don't care about how they look or smell. Less laundry is the goal.
  3:54pm
BT:

Thumbs up button!
  3:54pm
BT:

Though not washing a tee with my name on it will likely assure that you don't get much action either.
  3:55pm
ben drinken:

oh, my pants and shorts I rarely change. I really only have one pair of pants other than work. and in summer one pair of shorts. no underwear ever, either. don't see the sense in underwear for men.
  3:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

BOING
  3:59pm
hubba:

well.. i tend to ditch the underpants... but, i've had a few close calls at work, so they go with me... however, the soggy bottom wranglers could be more comfortable without the saturated briefs. underwear and summer time do not mix!
  4:03pm
Aaron Dilloway:

i saw Maskull live in a park in ann arbor!
  4:03pm
Aaron Dilloway:

new wave theatre
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dillo: Really? Apparently Maskull hasn't been seen for a while. When was this?
  4:06pm
Cheri Pi:

or as I call them, Butt-Sweat & Tears.
  4:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dillo: Or was that a joke on a person you did see in the park? :)
@BT: KASIM SULTAN! TOMMY JAMES! And part of THE FAMILY STONE! You'd better head on up there!
  4:06pm
Lord Grenville:

send me to Stanley camp dad
  4:08pm
Lord Grenville:

When is that Freddy Mercury movie with the Borat guy coming out?
  4:08pm
BT:

Holy crap, please find Maskull!
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! WFMU Rock Camp!

Ted Leo will pretty much have to show up! :)
Yo La Tengo, Times New Viking, who else would probably be featured there?
  4:10pm
Aaron Dilloway:

this was like 1996? I was working at Encore Recordings in Ann Arbor...On my lunch break went by this park where there was a free gig and dude was playing solo. Totally flipped me out.... never got his name... but went back to work and Maskull cd was in the new arrivals section. Checked it out..and no doubt it was the same dude.. I mean... No way I could hear 2 dudes in same day that sounded like THAT
  4:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Brian May and Roger Taylor's late 60s band. Cool.
  4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Seems like a slightly surreal day, Aaron! "Without A Trace" can now circle Ann Arbor and write 1996 on the Maskull investigation's board.
  4:14pm
Aaron Dilloway:

There's a Maskull investigations board?!
  4:14pm
hubba:

I think Maskull is working in HR down the hall.
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Aaron: Oh of course. There's a board there for all media personalities who have just disappeared.

Like Judson Fountain--last seen at the old East Orange WFMU in 1995, he continues to be unlocated...
  4:16pm
Aaron Dilloway:

Ah ok...CD came out in 97... so was prolly 1997
  4:17pm
hubba:

In 1985, a three-hour play by David Wolpe based on the novel, A Voyage to Arcturus, was staged in Los Angeles.
  4:18pm
Heads Up:

I just now bought a used copy of Maskull on amazon.com, 81 cents plus shipping. Only two left!
  4:19pm
Heads Up:

@hubba: FWIW, that novel was written by the well-known literary critic Harold Bloom, though he's subsequently disowned it.
  4:20pm
Aaron Dilloway:

NICE PRICE! That Wezin track was amazing btw!
  4:20pm
BT:

Mauritanian guitar boogie destruction!
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hmmph! Well riddle me THIS, Eugene: if you won't live in New York City, then where are you gonna find any salsa, huh?!
  4:23pm
hubba:

@ Heads Up: I thought David Lindsay wrote "Voyage?"
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Mauritanian! Mauritania, Western Sahara, you've got a great West African guitar selection here!
  4:30pm
ben drinken:

looking forward to making salsa with the tomatoes, peppers, garlic, and cilantro from our garden. soon. I started removing the seeds and innard stuff from the tomatoes before using for salsa. makes it less watery/runny.can use that stuff for soups and other.
  4:31pm
Heads Up:

Sorry, I meant _The Flight of Lucifer_, which Bloom wrote as a sequel to _Voyage to Arcturus_. That's me rushing, sorry!
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I made some salsa but put too much salt in it. Tomatoes are coming in real nice now though.
  4:34pm
Cecile:

Aaron, you worked at Encore? I worked at Wazoo for a couple of years in the mid 80s
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, is that whole "Rumours" album a Tribute to the Mac's "Rumours"?

@ben: Sounds great, I love fresh salsa. And yes DCE, nothin' like fresh tomatoes this time of year. I'll need to get some about now.
  4:36pm
Heads Up:

Small World Note: My roommate in college worked at the Music Mart in AA in the late 70s. Teaches Philosophy at Rutgers now.
  4:38pm
slugluv1313:

WOW!!!!!!! BORN IN FLAMES!!!!!!! thanks, Brian!
  4:39pm
ben drinken:

no tomato blight this year like last year. I made some really good hot sauce last year. just some simple hot sauce. has anyone ever shook head in craziness at the so many kinds of hot sauce made by americans with all the claims that it will be as hot as hell or burn you a new one and all the gimmicky labeling about how extreme this hot sauce is and you can't handle it unless you are the devil or sam kinison etc..
  4:39pm
Cecile:

Nice. I knew some folks who did grad work at Rutgers who worked at the Discount Records with me when I was working there.
  4:40pm
Aaron Dilloway:

ya...was at encore for about 8 years...later 90's/00's. Thankfully Encore and Wazoo are still kickin'!! ok..Gotta run!! Great show Brian!
  4:40pm
Cecile:

ben drinken, I like the stuff that has some flavor as well as heat. If I want to scorch my mouth, I'll singe my tongue with a lighter.
  4:41pm
Cecile:

yeah, it is great.
  4:44pm
hubba:

I haven't seen them this year at the Sunday farmer's market, but hot thai peppers are my salsa secret weapon. I usually have to wear gloves when handling them... that was before i got the food processor. Anyone make "fruity" or green tomato salsa?
  4:45pm
ben drinken:

i always appreciate good hot sauce and the kinds you find in latin america or in ethnic food stores. the bottles are simple and just say hot sauce on them and maybe a picture of the kind of pepper. no claims that it is going to blow your tongue up to the sun or anything, or contact doctor prior to use like the dumb marketing in the states.
  4:47pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

@ hubba, I always see recipes for watermelon salsa, but I've never made it. It sounds like it would go bad pretty quick.
  4:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Tom Lax! Love his annual show!
  4:47pm
Cecile:

one of the best ones just has a chicken on it!

Ivan Julian also played with Matthew Sweet on tour in the mid 90s. i saw him a couple of times...
  4:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Cecile, Sri Racha! It's a rooster. An atomic rooster.
  4:48pm
Cecile:

I have made great mango salsa. You need: mangoes, salt, Penzey's black and red seasoning (50% cayenne, 50% black pepper), lots of chopped cilantro, lots of fresh lime. It's very good.
  4:49pm
ben drinken:

oh! one cool thing to do with watermelon rinds is to bake them in a cookie sheet or something sprinkled with a bit of sugar and it will become a jam. wonderful on toast or with icecream, or even a pie.
  4:49pm
Cheri Pi:

Pentagram played to about 20 people in Cincy, it was so embarassing! But Bobby was a true sweetheart.
  4:49pm
hubba:

In passing, someone mentioned vodka salsa... any experiences with that concoction?
  4:49pm
Cecile:

I know, I was being coy. A rooster is a chicken, last I checked, lol!
  4:49pm
Cecile:

Cheri, really? That sucks.
  4:50pm
hubba:

aww... sounded rad on 45
  4:50pm
Cheri Pi:

Cecile, I'm intrigued, never used Penzey's r&b; I love it spicy.
  4:50pm
Cecile:

DCE, if you make salsa, it doesn't make it to the fridge, much less hang around long enough to spoil...
  4:50pm
hubba:

this song has that awesome hook/line... "if they could see me now..."
  4:51pm
Cecile:

it is very nice. You can only get it at Penzey's, but it's sure tasty.
  4:51pm
Cheri Pi:

Yeah-it was a weekday night and tickets were expensive. It's really hard to get people out and about in this town. TOnight I'm driving 2 hours to see the Men/Iceage!
  4:52pm
Cecile:

wow! I used to do that....:/
  4:54pm
hubba:

@DCE I'd go as far as to hollow out a small watermellon as a salsa serving dish!

@Cecile I've done a similar recipe with nectarines... it was very fresh feeling, better as a topping, like on pulled pork
  4:55pm
hubba:

all these last laugh releases rule!
  4:56pm
ben drinken:

only a matter of time that my Brian Turner t-shirt will become like all of my other wfmu t-shirts. full of unwashable and permanent food stains, smell like garlic even after a wash, and holes around the abdomen part because of constant use as a napkin or to wipe nose. but it being all black will help.
  4:57pm
eric h:

excellent show brian! Just mailed you a package of goodies from Tape Drift too. Hope you enjoy.
  4:57pm
BT:

The garlic was intentional, I had it added to all the t's.
  4:58pm
Cecile:

Hubba, mangos are good as a topping, but with the seasonings, they are also good on chips.
  4:58pm
Cheri Pi:

I'm gonna get those soggy danish teens on the BT shirt. I think I might be a cougar.
  4:59pm
ben drinken:

the lone musical note on the shirt looks a lot like a garlic and stalk with a scape.
  5:00pm
Cheri Pi:

Can we send you our gross shirts BT, and you can judge them?
  5:00pm
Cecile:

soggy Danish teens? Do tell!
  5:01pm
hubba:

I just don't see mangos at the farmer's market... getting 8 pounds of tomatoes for 3 bucks and another 6 pounds of peaches/nectarines for just as much... you work with what you got... making vegan peach pie tonight!
  5:01pm
dvd:

hey brian, enjoying the show!
  5:02pm
ben drinken:

where I live they have a terrible sneaker contest every year. usually for the kids. the nastiest sneakers win. kids spend all year turing their sneakers into horrible stinky rotten peices of fabric almost half attached to a sole. could do something like that with wfmu listeners and t-shirts.
  5:03pm
Cecile:

that's fine. We get some because some vendors do ship things in. Not local, but cheaper than the grocery store.
  5:05pm
ben drinken:

oh, Chris T! his pot holder premium is already full of food stains. no holes yet.
  5:05pm
BT:

The garlic was intentional, I had it added to all the t's.
  5:11pm
BT:

Cheri, I tried to convince Ice Age that wearing those shirts would make them the new Devo but they wouldnt listen.
  5:12pm
ben drinken:

the other marathon premiums that are back ordered are the terre-t apron, my wife wanted that. it will eventually have a different kind of stain on it other than food, i'm sure. naughty, naughty!
  5:16pm
glenn:

might be a cougar? i wonder when apple is going to introduce the cougar o.s. probably after they run through all the leopards and shit.
  5:21pm
ben drinken:

does anyone know if any of the dj's on wfmu have heir own app? I know Andy Breckman has that zinger app.
  5:36pm
Cecile:

I think Kurt Gottshalk has one of his shows....
  5:41pm
ben drinken:

there was a guy i read about in one of the blast of hot air's a while back that designs iphone apps for wfmu related stuff. can't remember his name. like he made a theremin app or some instrument? anyone remember or know. I bet he could do a Brian turner app of some sort. Like an app where you could have an untouched BT t-shirt then attempt to put all kinds of stains on it. or whatever. something cool and fun and respecting Brian.
  5:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Awesome! The EAS is now using that Pappo's Blues you're playing as their tone! So much better than that garbled modem crap!
  5:46pm
Cecile:

There is a really fun ocarina app out there.
  5:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Damn! And there is goes.
Why couldn't they just keep the full-blown EBS tone if they're going to interrupt our shows? That was so bad it's...so bad. But in a not quite bad and still not quite good way. Or, maybe this is the nostalgia kickin' in.
  5:48pm
Cecile:

ha! This is what I call eggbeater prog.
  5:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like it, good one Cecile!
  5:49pm
Cecile:

this does have a bit of a modern feel to it. Are these guys informed by hip-hop or funk in addition to King Crimson and whatnot?
  5:55pm
adam:

I tuned in and thought the Psychic Paramount stuff was studio material. They're the real deal it seems.
  5:57pm
Cecile:

Ha! I called it.
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Another fun day at BT's! Thanks, and have a good night!
  5:59pm
Cecile:

heartbreaking. I'll try and do my part.
  6:00pm
Nathan:

I can see the smoke from that Sony warehouse from my flat. I've got a few label running mate's that are pretty scared about the future.
  6:00pm
hubba:

BT... jsut snagged a shitdogs double 7"... but tha tis not a uk label. Thanks for the tunes, bye everyone
  6:01pm
Cecile:

I've been pretty sick to my stomach about it. Knowing that people distributing the music I love are hurting makes it worse. They are not rich people.
  6:24pm
BT:

I will happily post any filthy tee pics anyone sends.
  10:23pm
Waqas:

hello. i know this may be late but i would really like to know more about the band Plath. they sound absolutely amazing!! and just from a song thats only 1 1/2 long. now its one of my favorite post-punk industrial songs. do you know more history, and if they released more music, please?? its really hard to find info on them :((
