  Sun. 7/31/11 12:32am cheri:

hello julie-- how do you like this summer so far??
Sun. 7/31/11 12:32am Holly in NC:

Does anyone know what exactly is/was the beef between Grant Hart & Bob Mould?

@12539 - Your number is darn close to 9353, who I adore... evil teen facility yard!
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:33am Julie:

Cheri I hate heat. Seriously. And I was standing in it all day at the Ponderosa Stomp. I am ready for fall. I like fall better.
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:35am cheri:

julie funny you should say that cause joe & i love the fall as well,,,
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:36am Julie:

"virgin album" = never been played? :D
Sun. 7/31/11 12:36am Holly in NC:

Julie - I'm a fellow heat-hater but I'm still dead envious - how was Ponderosa?
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:38am Julie:

Holly it was awesome! Lesley Gore (darn her) Ronnie Spector and La La Brooks in person. They were fantastic.
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:38am 12539:

@Holly, I had totally forgotten that I once owned 9353's "To Whom It May Consume" once upon a time.
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:38am Julie:

And Dave & Gaylord kept their gold blazers on the ENTIRE time
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:39am Julie:

the highlight was definitely La La's River Deep, Mountain High
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:40am Joe McG:

@Holly: I believe the problems were drugs and resentment from a failed love affair re: Bob and Grant. At least that's what I've read.
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:40am cheri:

joe & julie--i just can't wait till the summers over
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:42am cheri:

julie i really love that tune,,,,"RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH"!!!
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:43am Julie:

as long as it's not Celine singing it
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:46am cheri:

i HATE celine dion
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:47am Joe McG:

All this girl group talk is compelling me to play some girl group stuff at the top of the hour. Any objections?
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:48am Julie:

I'm all for it, Joe!
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:50am 12539:

Who am I to tell Joe McGasko what to do?
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:50am Julie:

the power of La La compels you
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:52am Joe McG:

I missed La La, unfortunately, but I heard her sing on WFMU! Style Council goes out to all of you summer sufferers like me.
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:52am cheri:

i second julie's motion,,,but julie please don't hate me for saying this but i think joe should play you know what, i'm sorry julie..
Sun. 7/31/11 12:53am Holly in NC:

Joe - Love 'The Sparrow'. I think I will just bop around my bedroom rather run in the park as your show is too interesting to leave!
GIRL GROUP REQUEST - The Gaylets - Here Comes That Feeling !
Pretty, pretty please, if the mood so strikes...
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:53am Chop Scott:

JOE!
Thanks for always making Saturday nights at home fine...
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:55am Joe McG:

@Holly: You're diggin' deep! I love it. Mostly what I planned to do was reprise some favorites from the show today, but we'll see what happens!
  Sun. 7/31/11 12:55am Joe McG:

Hey, Chop Scott! Great to see you as always!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:00am kiemzi:

i would write a letter to myself but i know i would probably never write back so why bother.
Sun. 7/31/11 1:01am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Joe! Hi Julie! Hi everyone!

Getting through the summer heat thanks to these COOL tunes!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:02am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Wow, you were at the Ponderosa Stomp! I wish I could have gone to that! Every bit as good as you thought?
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:07am Julie:

@Matt let's say I wasn't planning to stay for all of it, but I did
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:07am Julie:

sequins! Lots of sequins! and she really could move that chair around :)
Sun. 7/31/11 1:09am Matt from Springfield:

That's awesome--Arlene doesn't let being confined to a motor chair dampen her enthusiasm!

Was she the lead singer of the Chantals? This is amazing stuff.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:12am Joe McG:

Reparata bringin' the surface noise!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:12am cheri:

  Sun. 7/31/11 1:14am Julie:

Sun. 7/31/11 1:15am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Fer sure! I love a good handclap fill!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:17am Julie:

do you have that one based on the Bach piece? I forgot the singer's name
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:17am cheri:

julie i just hope you could forgive me,,
Sun. 7/31/11 1:17am Matt from Springfield:

Irwin played the original 45 of this as his Ellie Greenwich tribute. The single had a (very loud) drum intro that was so catchy, and almost flying the needle off the record! Don't forget that The Raindrops was really just Ellie and Jeff Barry.
Sun. 7/31/11 1:18am Rebecca in Hoboken:

I'm a heat hater too! Joe I just tuned in, I can't wait to play the archive tomorrow to hear what I missed.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:18am Julie:

Dave & Gaylord played all girl group 45's on Spazz's show thursday, so next time you need a girl group fix check that out
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:19am Joe McG:

Hey, Becky! Glad to hear from you!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:19am cheri:

night all
Sun. 7/31/11 1:19am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie Do you mean "A Lover's Concerto" by The Toys? Based on Bach's Minuet.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:19am Julie:

I missed that whole story..so La La was the lead singer but Darlene got all the credit?
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:20am Julie:

Yes Matt that's the one..I was like OH that's why I know that tune
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:21am Joe McG:

I'm sorry I didn't bring my Jaynetts 45--it sounds much better than the CD version.
Sun. 7/31/11 1:21am Matt from Springfield:

I thought so. I actually had to play that on the violin, before I heard of the Toys piece.

Joe! You're playing that creepy "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" song again!!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:24am Julie:

@Matt yup I knew from piano
Sun. 7/31/11 1:24am Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, is that "One Kiss Can Lead To Another" comp still in print? Everything you play from that is amazing!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:24am Joe McG:

@Matt: Sorry about that, Matt. Love that song!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:25am cheri:

ohhhh i almost forgot, joe & julie stay cool!!!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:26am Joe McG:

Thanks, cheri! Sleep well!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:29am Holly in NC:

Joe, you have a rare talent for making me cry when I'm perfectly happy
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:29am Julie:

Me & Joe are nothing BUT cool ;)
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:29am Julie:

awwwww
Sun. 7/31/11 1:31am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: It's his powerful singles that do it! Wouldn't be late on Saturday night without some happy souls tearin' up :)
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:33am Julie:

and Gaylord!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:34am Matt from Springfield:

Dave and Gaylord--playing Girl Groups long after their gold blazers fade to yellow!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:34am Holly in NC:

Disconcerting - I was just checking Arlene Smith & the Chantels on Youtube and ran across a rather good cover of 'Maybe' by John Frusciante. I know that some deep listeners are all over his Niandra lp, but this particular cover was a surprise to me!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:34am Matt from Springfield:

Surface Noise Rating: AUDIBLE!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:35am Matt from Springfield:

Sha-la-las.....quick! Cross-fade into "Baby It's You"!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:37am Holly in NC:

Make the night just a little bit longer
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:39am cheri:

julie-- you have another e-mail
Sun. 7/31/11 1:39am Matt from Springfield:

Hey Joe, do you have any 31st of February on you? In tribute to the 31st of July! :-D
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:39am Julie:

I envy these boys and their nifty 7" carrying cases
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:40am Joe McG:

@Matt: Actually, I love that record, but I don't have it with me. I'll see if the library has it....
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:42am Julie:

Wasn't Swan Song the label in Phantom of the Paradise?
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:42am Joe McG:

@Julie: Time to haunt those flea markets for 45 cases...
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:43am Julie:

@Joe seriously! I do have one of those plastic spindle cases though!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:43am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Wow, thanks! It would be great if you find that!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:43am Holly in NC:

co'dine
Sun. 7/31/11 1:45am Matt from Springfield:

Dave Edmunds was in a band called Love Sculpture that released a fast rock version of "Sabre Dance" in 1968. That's a good SF candidate if you ever find the 45 for that.
Sun. 7/31/11 1:46am Holly in NC:

er, that was re 31st of February - a very good version
Sun. 7/31/11 1:46am Matt from Springfield:

"Edmunds's only acting role followed, as a band member in the David Essex movie, Stardust." (!!!) It always goes BACK to him, doesn't it!!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:46am Patty O'Furniture:

Hi Joe! I figured it out. From Wikipedia; on Bernadette Castro:

Bernadette Castro (b. 1944, Manhattan, New York) is a New York politician and businesswoman who served in the Cabinet of former Governor George Pataki. She was the heir and former President and Chief Executive Officer of Castro Convertibles, a sofa business in New Hyde Park, New York. Castro sold the company to Krause Furniture in 1993.[1] As a child, she appeared in commercials for the company where she would pull out a sofa bed.
Bernadette Castro recorded several singles in the 1960s for Columbia Pictures' Colpix Records recording subsidiary including a girl group-style record which hit the national charts, "A Girl In Love Forgives." Fans of the genre say this is one of the few girl group records that can compete with the Shangri Las' and Ronettes' best work. She released an additional single on Colpix called "Sports Car Sally," popular among many girl group collectors for its hot-rod theme.

Whoa. Do you have any Pleasure Seekers?
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:47am Joe McG:

@Matt: I think I've played it from the LP, but the 45 eludes me, alas! Maybe one day. ESSEX!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:47am Julie:

Pleasure seekers! Suzi Quatro and her sisters!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:48am rob pruitt <3's jonathan horowitz:

  Sun. 7/31/11 1:49am Lisa:

Damn. Missed Crawlin from the Wreckage. Mmm, high school indie radio memories
Sun. 7/31/11 1:49am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly Okay, yeah I like that song. Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote that from her experiences with codeine. I first learned about that from a live Look Blue Go Purple set from the 80s I found on YT.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:49am Joe McG:

@Patty: Wow, thanks for taking time out to add that to the playlist!
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:50am Julie:

wasn't Codine a Donovan song?
Sun. 7/31/11 1:51am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Originally written by Buffy, but Donovan did release a version in '65. Don't know if she released one first, or who did first. But Donovan was one of the early performers of that song.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:52am Julie:

Funny..searching for it I see each credited as writer depending where I look
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:52am cheri:

joe & julie i apoligize for bugging you half the night,, but you know it's saturday night!! julie please write back
Sun. 7/31/11 1:52am Holly in NC:

good lord we are a bunch of music geeks
QUATRO POWER!
@Julie - Buffy original, many, many great versions.
Latest issue of Ugly Things has an AMAZING Pleasure Seekers /Quatro sisters feature. Really excellent.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:53am Joe McG:

Suzi Quatro has a new album coming out in August.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:53am Patty O'Furniture:

@Joe: cut 'n paste baby o/*\o (that's a high five!)
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:54am Julie:

Only version I ever heard was Donovan's!
@Joe yeah I've been watching her touring on Twitter. I hope it's good. She's pretty hit and miss these days.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:55am Julie:

her first single is on Itunes.
  Sun. 7/31/11 1:57am Julie:

album out sept 6. and she still looks damn good in a pair of jeans. (or leather for that matter)
Sun. 7/31/11 1:58am Holly in NC:

@Matt - don't think I didn't excitedly note the Look Blue Go Purple tip - thank you!
Sun. 7/31/11 1:58am Matt from Springfield:

LOL, Leather Tuscadero!
The good news (like you said before) is that more people are discovering Suzi Quatro for her music, and forgetting about her TV stereotypes!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:00am cheri:

it's been fun,,,i hope we can do this once again joe & julie
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:01am Julie:

How can you not love a girl who sang "I wanna be your man?"
Sun. 7/31/11 2:01am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Why thank you for noticing! LBGP were a great "Kiwi rock" group from New Zealand in the 80s. "Cactus Cat" is a great one, "Circumspect Penelope", ("Codeine" and "Ralta" on YT). Wonderful jangly sound!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:02am king penguin:

A friend of mine wrote a song "I'm Ready Rita" about no other. Very good. He recorded it.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:03am Julie:

didn't castro have that commercial with the little girl opening the sofabed?
Sun. 7/31/11 2:06am Matt from Springfield:

The wiki article just said Bernadette was that child, but that would've been in the 50s--unless they re-used the footage forever more. They could have repeated that visual with new models every so often.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:08am Julie:

okay look blue go purple are really cool and I never heard before
Sun. 7/31/11 2:09am Matt from Springfield:

Pleasure Seekers! Pleasure has been sought, and found!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:09am Holly in NC:

  Sun. 7/31/11 2:09am Joe McG:

  Sun. 7/31/11 2:09am Julie:

Sun. 7/31/11 2:11am Holly in NC:

As well as being geeky, we really are easy to please, aren't we?
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:12am Julie:

will I be lost if I haven't heard volume 1?
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:13am cheri:

i can't sleep,, i'm sorry joe & julie,,, btw julie please e-mail me back ty
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:14am Julie:

http://tinyurl.com/3gffrh8 I guess suzi is on the right..wow
Sun. 7/31/11 2:16am Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, "Bouzouki" Joe!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:17am Lisa:

Kolektif Istanbul!! Yes!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:18am Holly in NC:

The 2 women on the far left are her sisters..note how Suzi is significantly shorter - her dad called her "sausage" .. one of her sisters postulates that that's why Suzi was compelled to be an especially aggressive lead!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:18am Joe McG:

It would be cool if you bought a bouzouki and got some comics in it.
Sun. 7/31/11 2:19am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Yes! But you need to read them in Greek or Turkish...
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:20am Julie:

I don't recall Bazooka Joe having a gun
Sun. 7/31/11 2:21am Holly in NC:

Did y'all know that, kinds like Nancy Drew, Bazooka Joe comics have been updated for the current batch of young chewers & readers? Same lame jokes as when I was coming up, but the protagonists now text rather than call each other.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:21am Julie:

I have four sisters..how come we never posed for a photo like that!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:22am Holly in NC:

Umm... are you and your sisters that hot? ;-)
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:23am Julie:

well back when people wore those outfits? yeah..although I was a little kid.
Sun. 7/31/11 2:23am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Wow, sizable family! If only you all had formed a band maybe! ;)
Sun. 7/31/11 2:24am Holly in NC:

My sisters & I are most definitely not, And our grandmother made all of our (polyester) clothes.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:26am Julie:

we had plaid hot pants
Sun. 7/31/11 2:28am Holly in NC:

If worn with tie dyed t-shirts & Thom McCann earth shoes, we're kindred spirits!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:29am Matt from Springfield:

Finally, an answer to the age-old question: "Were plaid hot pants ever a 'thing'?" :)
Sun. 7/31/11 2:34am Matt from Springfield:

Advisory Circle's sounding great--new but like a cross between Pink Floyd and Ommadawn!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:35am Brian in UK:

Morning Joe & everyone. Sunny here, looks like a belter. Looking forward to listening to the archive to hear your pronunciation of the first two tracks on the second set!!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:36am Joe McG:

@Brian: You're in for a distinct treat!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:36am Matt from Springfield:

Morning Brian!
Yes, Joe's already apologized for said pronunciations!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:37am Hell's Kitten:

Fistanbul?? That shouldn't be part of any word.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:39am Joe McG:

@Hell's Kitty: Ha ha!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:39am Matt from Springfield:

@HK: Then I can tell you're REALLY not going to like the 70s Turkish-violence exploitation flick, "Fistanbul" :D
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:40am Hell's Kitten:

I can't judge until I've seen at least half of it
Sun. 7/31/11 2:42am Holly in NC:

Hello Hell's Kitten!

And good night Joe, a super show, thank you very, very much.

  Sun. 7/31/11 2:44am Julie:

I always start my day with a big bowl of Splendifer-O's
Sun. 7/31/11 2:46am Matt from Springfield:

Sun. 7/31/11 2:47am Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Sun. 7/31/11 2:48am Matt from Springfield:

Morning Yair!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:49am Brian in UK:

Matt ref 01:45 When John Peel had Love Sculpture on Top Gear (his radio programme) around 1968 they played Sabre Dance. He had to play it again later in the show because it was such a knockout. Based on a Khachaturian piece I believe. Mr Peel understood freeform & that you could play something again, this was unheard of then.
Sun. 7/31/11 2:49am Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Hey Matt ;)
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:51am 12539:

Joe, you've kept me up very, very late. Thanks a lot!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:51am Brian in UK:

Little Susans dreaming of puppies that can talk. Only in '67
Sun. 7/31/11 2:52am Matt from Springfield:

@Yair: I learned about this from the Wiki front page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Israeli_housing_protests
Any housing protests near where you live?

@Brian: The late, great Mr. Peel. A very wise free-form idea!
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:52am Joe McG:

@12539: I aims to deprive you of sleep. Glad I succeeded tonight!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:53am Matt from Springfield:

I love all the Left Banke I've heard, this one is also a lovely, unique song.
Sun. 7/31/11 2:55am Brian in UK:

On reflection '65 was my best year for singles & '68 was the year the album came of age.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:55am Joe McG:

@Matt: I love 'em, Matt. Me and Bob Brainen!
Sun. 7/31/11 2:56am Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Matt - yea, there's a riot going on!! ;)
seriously, there are protests all over the country, as people cannot make ends meet. even when earning descent salaries, the cost of living is just absurd and impossible. people cannot pay rents let alone buy a tiny flat without selling their soul to bank lawns.

So people are leaving their house and move to the streets to live in a tent. See this CNN video report to catch the vibe
http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2011/07/29/flower.israel.tent.cities.cnn?hpt=hp_c2

I'm in the protests every day, it is a very exciting thing. it's the first time people here are demanding their rights, 100k of pepole are in the streets. this is the first time such a huge amount of people are claiming their social/economical rights.
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:58am 12539:

(Joe don't forget Irene, who had the Left Banke on her show.)
  Sun. 7/31/11 2:58am Julie:

Didn't Irene recently have Left Banke on?
Sun. 7/31/11 2:59am Matt from Springfield:

I'm glad so many are constructively engaged in that issue and taking their activism to the streets--it will make an impact if EVERYONE is doing it at the same time! Great job! :)
Sly Stone agrees with you :)
Sun. 7/31/11 3:00am Brian in UK:

Good work Joe, pick you up on archive. Sleep well everyone.
Sun. 7/31/11 3:00am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for a great show Joe!
I like the long spacey tracks in your 2:00 hour--keep those up!

Goodnight Julie! 12539! Yair! Brian!
Sun. 7/31/11 3:01am Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

'night Matt.
  Sun. 7/31/11 3:01am Julie:

goodnight everyone, thanks for a great show Joe and the girl group treats!
