Live performance by Jolie Holland with Kerry Lamprecht

Stepping out to solo from the Be Good Tanyas several years ago, the smoky-voiced Jolie Holland has a fifth disc of originals just out on Anti. It's called "Pint of Blood," an unusual melding of folk, country, blues, and jazz that is compellingly unclassifiable. Jolie recently contributed vocals to Matt Bauer's latest disc, "The Jessamine County Book of the Living," and collaborated in the past with the likes of Hal Willner and Booker T. Jones. Jolie Holland dropped by WFMU with Kerry Lamprecht (vocals, violin) in advance of her show Tuesday June 28th at The Bowery Ballroom.

Erie Lackawanna was the name of first a passenger then a freight railroad company that served my area until they were absorbed into Conrail.

What's are British rockers doing singing about a railroad company in upstate New York, hmm?

Evan Hughes:

Thanks for keeping us reminded of important quiet music from now but also the masters examples : we do need to hear Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, KD Lang, et. al. In the end it is not the distinctions or differences but the continuum of ideas and sounds. You blend it all in perfect way Irene and it all seems effortless. A simple thank you falls so short....
