|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:11am
Julie:
@fleep I prefer not to think about it
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:13am
jaycjay:
Yeah, let's just skip the cat anus-kissing and go right to the lark-catching.

Tue. 6/7/11 3:20am
Matt from Springfield:
Good morning Julie! Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat! With their album If The Sky Falls We Shall Catch Larks--do you think they come up with their names by Mad Libs?
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:20am
Julie:
That's all right, HF! Bare feet are just fine.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:21am
Julie:
Enjoy, mark! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:21am
Julie:
@Matt I do like the album title..it is sweet
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:23am
Matt from Springfield:
Dig the 60s sound of "Willow's Song"! @HF: I think the "surprise" is that they'll throw us in the pool later--you don't want your slippers getting wet!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:23am
Julie:
Bear feet are also welcome. I am nothing if not all-inclusive.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:23am
Julie:
@Matt I had meant to play the Faith & The Muse version but saw that I already had so dig the original :)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:24am
Julie:
Hi Jay! just spotted you there...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:24am
Brick Van Dee:
Good morning all! Waking up to Willow's Song from The Wicker Man has been quite an experience. That's one of my favourite films!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:25am
helsingfred:
F&tM / Monica Richards / got any Strange Boutique? Powerful stuff
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:27am
Julie:
Not with me tonight, HF, but I'll dig some out another time. I really know F&M best, and I'm unsure about her new solo stuff, it's very different.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:27am
Julie:
Good morning, Brick! Did you see the wretched remake? Cage is like I love this movie, let's RUIN it!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:28am
Julie:
The Wicker Man still gives me chills when I think about it. (the original, the remake for different reasons!)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:31am
Brick Van Dee:
Never saw the remake - It seemed so pointless and strange. Original one gets more chilling each time you watch it I think...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:32am
jaycjay:
Heh, I never did see the remake with Cage, because I couldn't see any reason for there be another Wicker Man. So, of course, happy to get confirmation.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:32am
Julie:
I dreaded it but went just in case..he really convoluted the story.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:33am
Matt from Springfield:
First time I heard of The Wicker Man--that sounds like a chiller indeed! I'm not looking below the fold for the rest of the plot, I intend to watch it now!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:34am
jaycjay:
Absolutely, Matt! Just be sure you pick the 1970s version!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:34am
Julie:
@Matt Yes you should. After 6am :)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:34am
helsingfred:
Yeah the original WM was tremendous! Then you read the book and you find out they toned down the scene where the local gal tempts him to lose his virginity... it was his only avenue out... and so it goes in the wild Wiccan world, with Christopher Lee in fine style as the wacko head honcho
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:37am
Matt from Springfield:
Yes I'm thinking of watching THAT film while there's light out :) And the "2006 Canadian/German/American version" is widely panned even on Wiki.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:37am
Julie:
The Willow's Song scene has to be seen to be believed. That's the first bit I ever saw, on some late night access show.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:38am
Brick Van Dee:
For those of you who haven't been there, Wicker Man is a documentary about Scotland...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:40am
Matt from Springfield:
Hey Fredricks! First time seeing you on a late show here ;)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:43am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
always felt that Volunteers didn't get the respect it deseved.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:43am
Julie:
@Matt I did think of hiim after I chose this song. No I don't think I've ever seen him here.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:43am
Julie:
@Yair I'm finding all sorts of JA albums I never knew existed. All I had was Crown, Bless & Surrealistic
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:45am
KP:
Yay, JA! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:46am
KP:
hey your math question validations are hard. Belock's re always single digits.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:47am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
Julie, this is a wonderful album but really DONT MISS After Bathing At Baxter's , my all time fav of theirs. Bark is brilliant as well, but Baxters is the sh*t
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:49am
Julie:
@Yair I'm exploring them as well, no worries.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:50am
jaycjay:
Yeah Yair! After Bathing is spectacular, I haven't listened to it for years but I have that vinyl tucked away.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:53am
Matt from Springfield:
Interesting sound of the Spray Pals--"Folk Wave", perhaps?
|
Tue. 6/7/11 3:57am
Matt from Springfield:
It's not even a "good bad" song! Cringeworthy! Maybe a textbook example what NOT to do...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:01am
helsingfred:
Y'all might check out "Flight Log", it's a pretty fair sampling of a bunch of Jeff Airplane and Jeff Starship and solo/duo albums.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:02am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
Ya-eer. and my pleasure :)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:03am
Matt from Springfield:
Eliza Rickman! (applause)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:06am
Matt from Springfield:
She LOOKS steampunk as well!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:07am
Julie:
She looks like me in college. SERIOUSLY.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:13am
helsingfred:
Chirp chirp ! I'm an inchirpretation !
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:13am
Julie:
That was a little bird that she filled with water.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:14am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
she's great! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:18am
Matt from Springfield:
Wow! First show of this "season" had The Dollyrots' "Brand New Key", coming full circle with Eliza Rickman's (also very different) interpretation of that!!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:19am
Brick Van Dee:
Wow, this version of Brand New Key manages to surpass the one by The Wurzels...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:19am
Julie:
@Matt you can imagine how thrilled I was when she told me she knew it!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:20am
Julie:
@Brick don't know THAT one, will have to check it out. I haven't played the Rasputina one yet either.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:20am
Julie:
The toy piano is just so perfect for it!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:21am
Brick Van Dee:
Ah, you've played THIS one before. Amazing song.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:22am
pierre:
Bonjour Jullie and all listeners ! just started my new job, can comment, but cannot listen (yet) ! > Arrgh.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:22am
Julie:
@Pierre Awww eff work! Yay for the archive!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:23am
Josh:
Loving the show tonight. Much to my distress, I have to tear myself away and go to bed. :(
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:23am
Julie:
@Josh we understand! Your homework is to listen to Eliza on archives!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:24am
helsingfred:
Suddenly I have this desperate desire to hear a toy piano rendition of Smoke on the Water
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:24am
KP:
She does this great too.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:24am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
Pierre - good luck with your new job!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:25am
Matt from Springfield:
"Crazy" as well! Bonjour Pierre!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:25am
jaycjay:
@Pierre, what's worse is what often happens to me while I'm working: can listen, but can't comment!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:26am
Julie:
Haha next time I talk to her, HF, I will ask.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:28am
Matt from Springfield:
@Pierre,JCJ: As once talked about on a playlist here, even worse is co-workers "confering" with you during shows, asking or telling you something, and you end up missing a huge chunk of the show (audio and comments)!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:29am
Julie:
You guys are such pros | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:30am
Matt from Springfield:
Wow, killer percussion/vocals backing track! This is kind of like Laurie Anderson in the early 80s, just a capella and handclaps/percussion, although hers would have been a lot more "synthetic", vocoder and synth.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:30am
jaycjay:
Oh yeah, Matt... I've done a "I can't talk right now, I'm really swamped with something, I'll catch you in a couple of hours..." when what I'm "swamped" with is WFMU.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:31am
Julie:
@Matt she had all kinds of cool stuff with her that we just didn't have time to get to.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:32am
Matt from Springfield:
Spoken like a true pro, jaycjay!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:34am
jaycjay:
Having one's priorities in order is the key to professional success.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:35am
Matt from Springfield:
@Julie: If I ever get to see Eliza live hopefully I'll get to experience that stuff. @myself: Obviously I meant multi-tracked a capella and handclaps, one of those things where there's no one but the "performer" themselves on every sound.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:36am
Julie:
She does play with a full band, but not this far from home (she's a Cali girl)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:38am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):
would love to see Eliza in Tel Aviv. I would offer her some local food and Hummus that I make myself (which I'm proud of, even more then I'm proud of my own music)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:41am
Brick Van Dee:
I'd heard that there were science fiction novels called "steampunk" but I had absolutely no idea there were "steampunk kids" until just now...Interesting...Are there any steampunk kids out there listening right now?
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:43am
Julie:
One of the bands I play, Abney Park, calls themselves a steampunk band but I have no idea how that applies to music.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:44am
helsingfred:
IF you want to READ some "steampunk", I can recommend "The Difference Engine". Check out some reviews to get the idea. It's pretty cool.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:45am
Matt from Springfield:
@Brick: "Steampunk" is a whole, broad school of art: from those sci fi novels/graphic novels where Victorians build futuristic machines (on then-dominant "steam" power), to the self-described "Goth" and "Old World" sounds of music, as well as dress and fashion (nice pic!)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:47am
Brick Van Dee:
Thanks for the tips Julie, Helsingfred and Matt. I've read Michael Moorcock novels where Victorians build futuristic machines, but that's my limit so far.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:52am
Julie:
She'll be in Nebraska tonight, if anyone's there :)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 4:59am
Matt from Springfield:
Nothing that's GREAT is ever "on the long side"! I enjoyed hearing you two talking! Music and interview, A plus plus!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:03am
Julie:
@Matt Thank you! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:04am
helsingfred:
Steampunk? Now for something completely different! Meet ZLAD! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp_PIjc2ga4 I hope I didn't post this already d'oh
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:07am
jim:
Nothing good happens after midnight!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:07am
Julie:
@jim my mom always said that to me.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:09am
scouse:
my garndma said EVERYTHING good happens after midnight
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:09am
Julie:
I like grandma! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:10am
scouse:
she was a black sabbath fan
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:14am
Matt from Springfield:
@HF: Santo Cilauro, he was one of the creators of the fictitious eastern Europe nation "Molvania"--Zlad is supposed to be Molvania's Eurovision singer! Irwin on this station has actually played "Elektronik Supersonik" before.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:15am
helsingfred:
@MfS: A-ha, that's who it is eh. Cheers!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:18am
helsingfred:
FWIW... "The Difference Engine" is a totally plausible alt-history where Babbage got funding and the machine was picked up by the Victorian gov't and turned into an instrument of oppression. Oh and Lady Ada is a doper and the machine... well.. let's not give away everything :)
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:18am
Matt from Springfield:
@HF: No prob, Cheers! @Julie: OMG, that song is FAMILIAR...and I'm actually brewing coffee RIGHT NOW!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:19am
Julie:
@Matt Coffee hounds! | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:20am
Matt from Springfield:
Cookie pushers and COFFEE hounds! Various covers of "Hounds of Love" in the last decade, this is one of the better ones.
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:20am
Julie:
@Matt when you are sleepy later, you will hate me
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:21am
Matt from Springfield:
Tim Powles isn't The Church's original drummer, but he was around in the 80s...and I'm sure he was waiting 20 years to do that drum intro!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:22am
scouse:
julie's antipodean connection... steve kilbey has a REALLY silly sounding new project out soon too...
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:22am
Matt from Springfield:
@Julie: Later, I'll just get more coffee!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:23am
Julie:
The reworking of this song is puzzling..the original was so good
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:23am
Julie:
@Matt ahhh so when your heart is racing at bedtime, then you will remember me and get mad!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:25am
Matt from Springfield:
Well, you did hit the nail on head earlier talking about "too many effects" in Kate's recent albums, this one is also too-processed voice (though the backing track is kinda like "Street Fighting Man", that part is good). But still, the original was so great!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:26am
Julie:
you read my mind | |
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:27am
Matt from Springfield:
I went to bed early after a trying Monday, so I in fact got up EARLY! The show you really can set your watch by! It's difficult to tell with this timeslot, sometimes you catch me up from the day before, sometimes I get up early. (But I wouldn't be drinking coffee at 5 if I intended to nap afterwards) :) @Julie I did read your mind!
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:28am
Matt from Springfield:
Does that mean Gordon Lightfoot's up next?
|
Tue. 6/7/11 5:28am
Julie:
umm nope out of my knowledge there
|

I also wanted to say earlier, was "Street Fighting Man" on an LP issue? You didn't say on the playlist but the mix sounds a bit different. Whoa, Rose McDowell and Boyd Rice doing a faithful "I Got You Babe" arrangement! VERY Dark Night!!!
