Sun. 5/29/11 12:10am Adam in Portland:

R.I.P.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:16am Matt from Springfield:

OMG, GIL HAS PASSED ON! It hardly seems like he was out of the spotlight with several shows here playing him regularly. Still, that live "Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is a very fitting tribute. I never heard that one before.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:19am Adam in Portland:

Hey, Matt! Joe, thank you for coming straight out of the box with a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:19am Joe McG:

Hey, Matt--Yeah, that's the original version from his first LP, which is pretty much a poetry album.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:19am Matt from Springfield:

Real fascinating that Gil lived to see the technology and social network that HAS televised the Arab revolutions; activists can now record their own footage and distribute it on the Net.

You'll be missed, Gil.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:20am Curtis:

We're all built up with progress,
But sometimes I must confess
We can deal with rockets and dreams,
But reality --
What does it mean?
Ain't nothing said,
'Cuz Freddie's dead
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:21am Joe McG:

Or Billy Green. Maybe I'll play that one.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:22am Joe D.:

man, fuck Primavera and all those jerks who are there.

great Gil Scott tribute McG, I knew it would come down to you
Sun. 5/29/11 12:22am Matt from Springfield:

Hey Adam! I'm glad Joe started with a tribute too.
In fact I'm glad that there always seems to be at least one FMU DJ who will play a tribute to an influential artist, no matter how underground they may have been.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:24am Adam in Portland:

@Matt: True, true, and Gil Scott Heron definitely warrants it.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:26am Joe McG:

Hey, Duffy! Hey, Adam!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:27am Mike Sin:

Johannesburg. I first heard this track and first heard of GSH by watching Saturday Night Live in the '70s.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:27am Mike Sin:

Johannesburg. I first heard this track and first heard of GSH by watching Saturday Night Live in the '70s.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:27am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Nice find, Gil Scott-Heron playing the SNL Richard Pryor hosted. What a black, unconventional and edgy program for the "Television" of those days! I heard that was the first SNL to be run on seven second delay!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:29am Joe McG:

Yeah, I think that's true, Matt. The network was petrified that Pryor was going to get blue and/or militant. Hey, Mike!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:32am hamburger / london:

some gill scott heron sketches I did from a while back.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59237647@N00/4526370299/in/photostream
Sun. 5/29/11 12:32am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Mike Sin! I listened to the fill-in you did two weeks ago in Archive. Glad I found out about your show! Loved your heavy late 60s and 70s emphasis--you definitely need to do more fill-ins!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:33am Joe McG:

That's really cool stuff, h/l. Thanks for sharing that!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:36am molerat:

Thank you for the GSH tribute. RIP.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:37am Matt from Springfield:

"John Foster Dulles ain't nothing but the name of an airport now!"
My international airport!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:38am r i s k y:

thank you joe! this is a trip!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:39am Joe D.:

1981, this could've been 2003, easy. Such a genius.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:40am Joe D.:

I wish I had been around to hate Ronald Reagan.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:40am Mike Sin:

@Matt -- Why thank you kindly!

I'm assuming Richard Pryor chose the guests for the SNL episode he hosted.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:42am Joe McG:

@Duffy: You can still hate him! He earned it. @Mike: Yes, Pryor made a point of having Scott-Heron on the show. It was the first time I saw him, too, and I was floored.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:43am Matt from Springfield:

Nowadays I'm not sure, but I think the guests had something to do with the music guests in those days. I just talked on the chat about Kate Bush's SNL appearance--during one of Eric Idle's shows.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:44am Julie:

@Matt her only US appearance, alas
Sun. 5/29/11 12:47am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie!
Joe played "Wuthering Heights" at the end of Single File two weeks ago. We chatted about it, and Joe spoke briefly on the air about his preferred version of Kate's WH.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:48am Julie:

Okay so which one do you like, Joe? Original or remake? And The Single File was also the name of Kate's singles box set.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:49am Julie:

I thought Mary was the only person besides me who liked KT. I'm sort of dreading Director's Cut.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:51am Tim:

Gil is sending this one out to all the ladies
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:51am Julie:

This is depressing me :/ But then, that's not hard
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:51am Joe McG:

Remake. Woman over girl.
Sun. 5/29/11 12:53am Matt from Springfield:

"ORIGINAL! Original!
So much higher, enthused, less trained! I have both versions, being a completist, but the '77 one you played is the one I LISTEN to!"

Do you mean the KT Bush Band? Are there any recordings of Kate in that "pub tour" group?
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:53am Julie:

@Joe. You're dead to me now. That version sounds so full of effect on her voice I can't stand it. Give me the wacky falsetto anytime :)
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:55am Julie:

@Matt no. I think the calling her "KT" thing is some kinda in joke. And I'm impressed you know what it's from. I do have some demos of her and a small combo which may be from that time period, but I don't think they were live.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:57am Julie:

That is my biggest complaint about Kate's later work. She buries her voice in echo and effect. The pureness of things like The Man with the child in his eyes is so much better to me. And we've co-opted Joe's comments board. As long as no one brings up The Cake, I'll be happy.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:57am Joe McG:

Yes, no more Cake and no more Kate Bush.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:57am Julie:

Wow, Joe this is a massive tribute!
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:59am Joe McG:

@ Julie: Just scratching the surface. A great man who did a lot of great work.
  Sun. 5/29/11 12:59am Julie:

Not even the Kate version of the Revolution will not be televised?
Sun. 5/29/11 12:59am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Interesting, maybe she recorded her demos with the band. Her brother Paddy was evidently in the KT Bush lineup. I heard the label sent her on pub gigs to get some live experience in before recording her first album.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:00am Julie:

Yeah I bet you could do a full three hours. @Matt yup.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:01am Matt from Springfield:

A Lovely Night, with A Lovely Tribute!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:01am Julie:

Has anyone ever done that? A whole show? I
Sun. 5/29/11 1:02am Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, playing the Kevin Ayers pretty early! That's how important Gil is!

Wiki has the news (and a photo!) on their front page.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:04am Matt from Springfield:

That's what I told you Joe! Tributes are too late--give proper respect with theme shows, while the people are still around!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:14am #K:

Hello Joe! Popular guy tonight I see!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:15am Joe McG:

Hey, #K! Just Primavera hangover! Nothing like a death tribute to kill a buzz!
Sun. 5/29/11 1:16am Matt from Springfield:

Reverse cymbal!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:17am 12539:

Joe, don't be so humble. As special as the festival was, I for one am glad you weren't preempted.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:18am Joe McG:

Wow, thanks 12539, I blush in your direction.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:19am Meghan:

Yay Joe!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:20am Julie:

That is okay, Joe. I know eventually you will get to the EBM set.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:20am #K:

Yeah, what 12539 said!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:21am Joe McG:

You guys! :) Hey, Meghan!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:22am Julie:

@Meghan are you pre-nap or post-nap?
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:25am Meghan:

Just heading home after DJing out. Nap for 2 hours and come to fill in for Keili. No planning. Im winging it! Ha
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:26am Julie:

Have fun!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:27am Joe McG:

Excellent! I'll announce this later, Meghan, and add it to the program log.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:29am Meghan:

Hopefully you'll still be there!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:29am Joe McG:

Ha ha! I'll be listening to you over my oatmeal, maybe! ;)
Sun. 5/29/11 1:39am Matt from Springfield:

Wall of Voodoo also recorded a version of Ring of Fire, I wonder if that's available on a 45!
Sun. 5/29/11 1:40am Brian in UK:

Mornin' Joe & friends
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:40am Joe McG:

@Matt: I have it on a 12" single, Matt, but it would be great if there was a 45. I could do a Single File of all Ring of Fires (I have Carlene Carter's and Johnny's, too) @Brian: Hey, mornin'!
Sun. 5/29/11 1:41am Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, you need a dose of your "Mornin' Joe" to wake up on Sundays, Brian!
Sun. 5/29/11 1:41am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: A good idea, I would support that!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:42am Joe McG:

OK, who HATES this disco T.Rex?
Sun. 5/29/11 1:45am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Well, I loved laughing at it! I appreciate it "in a very WFMU way"! No regrets hearing it, in other words!
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:50am 12539:

Cheese can be part of a healthy diet.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:51am 12539:

But personally, I draw the line at Sting, even in Japanese.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:52am Joe McG:

Ha ha ha! Can only take so much cheese, eh?
Sun. 5/29/11 1:52am Matt from Springfield:

BWHOA! Japanese Police!
I suppose this single was made for their Japanese fan club, or, the "Tokyo Police Club"(!)
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:53am Joe McG:

Good one, Matt! The other side is in Spanish.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:54am Brian in UK:

Beatles in German. Bowie in French. They have all done it.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:55am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Muy bueno!
The funny thing is, with a nonsense chorus, that Police song was already popular in non-English countries, dunno why they recorded multiple versions, unless because it was easier to write them for this one.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:55am Joe McG:

@Brian: Don't forget ABBA in every language of the world.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:56am Rick:

The Japanese are better ROCKERS than this.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:57am Brian in UK:

Police in gibberish. Japan does do some crazy imports/exports.
Sun. 5/29/11 1:57am Matt from Springfield:

You're being ambiguous again Wynn. What are you trying to say? Just come right out and say it, already!

@Joe: I snagged an MP3 of Abba's "Ring Ring" that goes from Swedish to Spanish to German. Very common with Eurovision songs especially, multiple langs in the same track releases.
  Sun. 5/29/11 1:57am Joe McG:

I definitely agree with you, Rick. But isn't a bonus that you can't understand Sting's lyrics?
Sun. 5/29/11 1:58am Brian in UK:

Police in gibberish. Japan does do some crazy imports/exports. Playboy records?
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:00am Rick:

@Joe McG: Yah, you got me.
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:00am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yup! Bit of a mixed message!
Sun. 5/29/11 2:01am Matt from Springfield:

My Dad said "De Do Do Do" was popular in Germany, since you didn't have to know English to sing the chorus. The funny thing about "Ring Ring" is you get to hear the syllable "ring" in all those languages, and I was surprised how soft the "R" sound is in Swedish, considering it's a Germanic language. The Spanish R was more pronounced, of course.
Sun. 5/29/11 2:03am Brian in UK:

It's early Joe, as previously mentioned.
Can zombies swim?
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:07am 12539:

Alas, the moment has arrived when sleep conquers stamina and I look forward to the archive.
Sun. 5/29/11 2:11am Brian in UK:

The reverend is in the studio. It's martini time!
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:15am Joe McG:

Ought to be a good show!
Sun. 5/29/11 2:23am Matt from Springfield:

Sound familiar :)
"Psychedelic folk jazz" remake, as it could be called!
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:25am Joe McG:

Rockin' that harpsichord!
Sun. 5/29/11 2:26am Matt from Springfield:

Oboes and piccolo flutes! YEAH!
Sun. 5/29/11 2:38am Matt from Springfield:

Great folk rock set tonight!
  Sun. 5/29/11 2:38am Joe McG:

Thanks, Matt!
  Sun. 6/5/11 7:44am Marmalade Kitty:

Awesome Gil Scott heron tribute, Joe, thanks
