Seriously though, I originally didn't know there were lots of people around who make Star Wars costumes and that's achievable. If I had, I would have gone for a scout trooper costume first because my goal was to do a 88 km charity bike ride in a costume. I found a stormtrooper kit easily on eBay... now that it's 99% finished, I realise it's totally inflexible - I can't sit down, let alone cycle.
I do like all that plastic hiding the face. With high costuming standards, most of us look like we really could have come right off the set of Star Wars. People who dress as Luke Skywalker or Han Solo usually look nothing like the actors... and with women who dress as Leia, usually they are wearing a metal bikini and we don't care if their face is nothing like Carrie Fisher's.

The club of "villain" characters that I'm about to join, the 501st (http://www.501st.com) do these:
* appear at hospitals for sick children
* a lot of appearances raising money for charities (eg next month Weird Al Yankovik will play in Sydney and has asked some of us to appear on stage during one or two of his songs and Al doesn't pay us but donates money in our name to local charity we endorse)

My next costume will be a biker scout and am going to start getting parts of the kit next month. I need to finish it before December for that annual major charity bike ride.
