Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Options May 4, 2010: Lord Davies and Heavy Friends: WHITE HILLS live set Mach 2!
Brooklyn's White Hills is frequently tagged as "space rock," and that's a fair enough starting point. But the band then layers in enough interesting elements - most notably a killer raw rock guitar sound that one reviewer non-ironically calls "Stoogewind" - so that non-heads (such as, ahem, your host) remain enthralled during even the longest jams. We figured three years was enough time for everyone's eardrums to recover from their previous appearance, so we're excited to welcome White Hills back to WFMU. They have a new self-titled release out now on Thrill Jockey.

Listener comments!

  Tue. 5/4/10 11:10pm a fan:

what time we can expect white hills to begin?
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:11pm Joe:

The picture is pretty perfect for Tuesdays - only needs Joe Belock whaling on a cowbell.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:11pm efd:

right around 11:30. I'll try to make the intervening minutes enjoyable. :)
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:12pm Joe:

on the homepage, I mean
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:12pm a fan:

your show is one of the good ones still left on wfmu. no need for the modesty. how long did they play? ~30 minutes like last time?
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:14pm efd:

correct, almost 30 minutes on the dot.

Joe, maybe someone can photoshop Belock into that homepage pic of the day.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:15pm AZ:

I had thought that Stardrive ('73) was the first prog LP on Elektra, but no. Once again, EFD informs as well as entertains!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:15pm john:

Hey look! I'm awake this week! Probably not a big deal to anyone but me, in retrospect....
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:15pm Joe:

And Dave Emory in the background! Looking extremely paranoid.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:16pm efd:

Everyone, please heap congratulations on the newly-married Commenteer John!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:17pm EL:

AZ is that you!? we should have had a listening party...maybe after diner @ golden state?
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:18pm AZ:

EL: I'd've figured you'd be sitting at home waiting for Lost to start...
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:19pm EL:

your're right. but a man can dream...a man can dream.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:25pm efd:

John, I'm chagrined that the commenteers are not following orders. Allow me to offer you my own personal congratulations on your recent nuptials!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:26pm AZ:

EL: Still, it would have been a good thing to do. (If we were really lucky, they might still have had some Russian River Consecration ale left.)
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:27pm AZ:

John, forgive my tardiness: big congratulations on tying the knot!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:28pm AZ:

Warrior Soul? Jeez, I haven't even _thought_ about these dudes since 1990.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:29pm efd:

I'd forgotten how much I liked this CD until recently. And there were (at least) TWO follow-up albums!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:29pm EL:

john, I don't think I know you but congrats anyhow. AZ, i went to surly goat two weeks ago. Made NC drink all the Dogfish Head they had on tap while I consumed the various Mikkeller and Russian River options.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:30pm john:

Evan, EL, AZ, thanks! And only 21 years after I first sneaked in to see a band she was in for free!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:38pm lisa jane p:

John- Heartfelt congratulations to you and your gal!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:41pm Joe:

congratulations! She must have very good taste in music!

Or very understanding.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:41pm EL:

By the way, White Hills fans. I ordered one of these at the beginning of the week and I haven't gotten a "sorry sold out" notice in the e-mail yet. You might be wise to try it out now and see if you can snare one:

  Tue. 5/4/10 11:43pm john:

LJP--Thanks! Joe--both!

Of course, she's away for a few days now, so it's all a weird flashback tonight. The music, come to think of it, is not at all a bad flashback soundtrack...
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:46pm EL:

AZ / LJP - Disappearing to watch LOST now. I hope to see you soon. For reals. xoxo to you both.
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:46pm efd:

Thanks for the tip EL!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:48pm EL:

EL: Enjoy! Thanks for the link to that limited edition!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:48pm AZ:

Oops. That last comment was from me, not "EL."
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:49pm efd:

I was wondering...!
  Tue. 5/4/10 11:59pm Joe:

Davies I do hope you plan on mentioning that these fine fellows will be playing Glasslands on the 29th with The Black Hollies, Golden Triangle, Psychic Ills and SEVERAL OTHER GREAT BANDS.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:01am efd:

Scroll down and look at the playlist over there on the left much, Joe?

I didn't think so.

(And not to worry, it will come up in the post-set interview as well)
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:06am AZ:

Wow! After that White Hills set, I'm exhausted.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:09am efd:

I hear you, AZ!
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:10am efd:

I like how they mentioned totally different bands from the ones Joe mentioned on that Glasslands bill.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:10am dave:

holy crap, that glasslands show is going to be insane.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:14am brycepunk:

That was a wonderful treat to come home from work to. Thank you! I'll be getting the album asap.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:16am Joe:

Well it's a good thing I said it then!

You'd all be lost without me. Lost I say!
Wed. 5/5/10 12:17am Michael from the Left Coast:

SOB's, Eddie Palmieri, the English Beat--have I slipped through a Time vortex? What year is it?
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:32am efd:

I know, that was a very retro MTO this week!

Tons of calls though, I'm glad I picked out an extra-long song.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:44am AZ:

"Creeque Allies"?
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:48am Danne D:

Happy Cinco De Funko Everyone!!!!
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:49am Danne D:

I'm in a bit of a funk over my fantasy team though :( My Knuckles took it on the chin last week and have dropped out of first place :(

And now John's gonna spend his honeymoon beating up on my team 8(
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:50am Danne D:

Congrats John :D
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:51am Danne D:

Though he should probably change his team name to the Grand Slam Marrieds, no?
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:52am Laurie:

hiiii! oh is this french resistance thing a side project from whatshisname? the guy who did dc comics and john belushi song? except it wasn't dc comics and john belushi it was something else

also, i think they are coming to town

also, i think he might have tweeted at me once i forget his name
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:53am john:

In point of fact, Danne, Becky asks me every day "have you set your lineups yet?" I mean, honestly, what more could you ask from a wife? Outside of going out and earning tons of money so I can sit home and pore through increasingly arcane baseball stats all day, of course...
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:53am Laurie:

also also, the lead singer for wetdog sounds like someone i have heard before. has she been in another band?
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:55am AZ:

EFD: about-to-be-a-birthday-girl LJP is dragging me to the living room to watch Lost, so I'll bid you adieu at this point. A stellar show this evening!

BTW, I see Soft Tags are coming the to the NYC area in late June. Any chance you might snag them for a session?
Wed. 5/5/10 12:56am Michael from the Left Coast:

At least one hurrah for the Delta 5!
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:57am Aharon:

John, Danne, et al.: I had to stop asking my girlfriend lineup questions because she kept on trying to sneak Melky Cabrera in there.
  Wed. 5/5/10 12:59am Danne D:

That's awesome John :) Sounds like you got a true keeper there :) The crazy part about me losing last week was that I actually won the Stolen Base category which is far from my team's strong suit (to put it mildly).

Looks like our trade has worked out for both of us so far :)

Btw, happy birthday to LJP from all us Funknatics, AZ :)
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:01am Danne D:

Lol Aharon.

Btw, you should never use the description I gave for my loss in reference to your team name :)

Between us and Evan Funk, we have 4 of the top 5 teams in the league right here on the board (at least) tonight :) Though EFD's gonna start laying the smack down 8(
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:03am john:

Yeah, Danne, only now if she ever divorces me and cites cruelty, exhibit A will be that I made her a Mets fan...

The trade has worked out reasonably well for both of us, yes!

And Aharon, I'd heard there was someone out there who wanted Melky Cabrera. Certainly wasn't a major league team...
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:09am Aharon:

Hey, John, that's my girlfriend you're talking about! Though you've got her dead to rights...What can I say? We're simple, short-season people.

Danne (in sort of sticking with that theme), I'm just biding my time until August, when I can start Jake Fox at every position and blow everyone's mind.

Happy funking, all; back to work for me.
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:12am efd:

whoa, all these comments! The comment window on my playlist entry page must have gotten stuck somehow -- I hadn't seen any comments after mine about the MTO. Sorry!
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:21am efd:

ok, let's try to catch up... happy Cinco de Funko to you Danne, and I'm sure you'll have another run at the top.

Laurie, Eddie Argos is the gentleman you're thinking of, from Art Brut.

whoops, have to cue something up...
Wed. 5/5/10 1:32am Michael from the Left Coast:

Speaking of Touch Too Much, on BBC 6 music they're rerunning their Record Producers series which includes a magnificent episode with Mike Chapman
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:35am Danne D:

I gotta get up early tomorrow, so I must hit the rest on the archives. Thanks for the great tunes, EFD!

Hope everyone's Cinco De Funko is everything they wish it to be :)

Farewell Funk Aficionados!
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:36am efd:

AZ, you're lost in Lost by now, but thanks for the tip on Soft Tags - I didn't know they were coming, but I'll see if I can set something up. And happy birthday to LJP, although I'll send her proper greetings on some social media platform or another.

Michael, that Delta 5 spin was in direct response to a suggestion of yours from a few weeks ago!
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:39am efd:

goodnight, Danne! thanks for stopping by.

Michael, I'll have to check that out - I bet it's great!
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:45am E.L.:

I've enjoyed it— the show that is.
Wed. 5/5/10 1:46am Michael from the Left Coast:

Yes the Arrows
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:48am efd:

thanks Michael, and thanks E.L.

We had a non-perioded EL with us earlier, btw.
Wed. 5/5/10 1:51am Michael from the Left Coast:

Whenever I hear this song now I flash to the Paul anderson movie
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:53am efd:

oh, which movie? Marty McS was just trying to figure out where he knows this song from.
Wed. 5/5/10 1:54am Michael from the Left Coast:

That would be Boogie Nights
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:55am efd:

ah, thanks! that's probably it.
  Wed. 5/5/10 1:58am E.L.:

Yeah I was going to get all territorial but I think the more ELs the better.
