Comus is the perfect music to listen to under this big blue sky. Though, ashes or no ashes? This is the question...

Dan, this song (And Am I Born to Die?) reminded me of Current 93's Idumea. Could David Tibet have been inspired by this? Infos about it appreciated.

Nevermind. I thought this was the Q104 website

Looms:
Excellent! | |
|
Sun. 4/18/10 7:16am
Dan B:
@Looms, absolutely. That's the same song -- it was originally written as a shape-note choral song and published in a popular 1840s American songbook called the Sacred Harp under the title Idumea. What I played was an "old-timey" instrumental interpretation. Tibet did the same thing with it on that Current 93 record with the multiple versions.

Dan B:
@Dum Dum Guy -- this totally *is* the Q104 website! You just won tickets to a crappy concert at a megaplex where beer costs $24/cup for social networking with the Q! Congrats!

Looms:
Thanks for this set and all infos about this Sacred Harp songbook, never heard about it though i've heard a lot from it (seems to have a huge influence in the US as far as i can read on the web). Out of the New Testament, i have such a poor religious knowledge... Tibet does not refer to it in the booklet of Black Ships, only to Charles Wesley.

Ha ha! Awesome! | |
|
Sun. 4/18/10 7:47am
Dan B:
@Looms, thought you'd like that one. That's actually the first version of Idumea I ever heard.
|

Tom L:
Awake, My Soul is a great recent summary of sacred harp: http://awakemysoul.com/. Both movie and soundtrack. Another Idumea streams form the homepage. Also, Cath Tyler, who gets good play here, teaches/hosts sacred harp events in the UK where she now lives. Link up to her: http://www.cathtyler.net/ P.S. That Zia made my day!

Anytime Looms! I've been told I listen to far too much Sacred Harp music... The Library of Congress also has a good digitized version of the 1860 Sacred Harp songbook: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/svy:@field%28DOCID+@lit%28harpT000%29%29

@Gadolinium: I did not know that. I need to learn my transition elements! Do you like this weird song?
