  Fri. 2/5/10 9:45am Cecile:

Aw, you got a bunch of snow, eh?

I loved Scharpling's rant this week about Chapel Hill being closed down after a snowstorm: "Panera Bread! Shame!"
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:46am Cecile:

Doug, why can't there be a real Conjunto Casino?
Great Latin music and food while you gamble away your life's savings...

Or in my case, the roll of nickels I allow myself when I'm dragged to those places.
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:47am Bad Ronald:

OK, I'm panicking. What next, frenzy?
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:48am dc pat:

that's just how we deal with snow in DC. Not a flake has fallen yet and the grocery stores are packed and some schools are closed....
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:49am Drummer Some:

Cecile, I think you are essentially describing pre-1960 Havana.
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:50am Paul Sherratt:

Panera Bread " No alcohol service and grease-free environment "
Fri. 2/5/10 9:55am Sighmon and Darkfunkel:

Our nation lost its party ties with you..
Boo-hoo-hoo..
  Fri. 2/5/10 9:55am Cecile:

  Fri. 2/5/10 9:56am annie:

Fri. 2/5/10 10:06am north guinea hills:

It's been awhile since NYC has gotten at least 18 inches of snow... :(
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:09am dc pat:

hey those happy white people on the home page are listening to Bo Diddley...
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:10am ken:

i picked paul bley up at the des moines airport in 1978 and hung out with him while he did his gig at grinnell college. he had never been to des moines and seemed genuinely moved by the experience.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:12am Nat:

Grinnell College in the house!
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:12am Cecile:

that's really cool, ken
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:13am ken:

kdic -- 11 watts of power. radio in the cornfields. bley was very cool.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:20am Nat:

Yes, ken! I am, in fact, a former kdic dj. I'm glad you both had a good experience there. wfmu and kdic are close to my heart.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:21am ken:

i wonder if kdic streams? probably dial-up.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:21am bryan:

i just saw bobby bradford this weekend in philadelphia - performing with frode gjerstad's circulasione totale orchestra. it was an incredible performance. but i spied more than a dozen folks that looked more on the bradford end of the spectrum leaving after the first song.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:22am Paul Sherratt:

Ken,
' It Sure Can Get Cold In Des Moines ' according to Tom T Hall
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:25am Hugo:

Who are the vocalists on this SME piece? Julie Tippetts? Maggie Nichols?
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:27am annie:

yup,>>http://kdic.grinnell.edu/
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:28am Drummer Some:

Hugo,
Just Tippetts. And did you see the choice of tune? That was intentional.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:29am ken:

thanks annie. btw -- chambers solo on this sounds a lot like the one i love so much on 58 live recording with miles at newport. he could swwwing on that bass, for sure.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:30am Nat:

Yeah, they're 21st century now...tore down the old vaulted gymnasium that used to house the studio and now its in the newly built, boring student center. Still I have faith...on right now: "European Power Metal and Ambient American Rock."
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:32am ken:

darby gym. i watched as 'sting' (yes, that sting) struggled to figure out a walking bass pattern during the sound check in that gym when the police played backup for an ultravox concert at grinnell. how they've fallen since then!
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:33am annie:

pretty diverse dj style goin on there at kdic. cecile you might want to check that out
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:33am Cecile:

"Splitting the difference between Blind Guardian and Tortoise!"
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:36am Hugo:

Doug, I thought it might be ...
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:42am Cecile:

annie, I will.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:42am Nat:

!!! God, that's great. All the Darby stories I've heard revolved around Springsteen's show there in 76 (?). Apparently, it was the same week he was on the covers of both Newsweek and Time. I was of the Guided by Voices/Yo La Tengo era of Grinnell shows. To bring things full circle: I talked with Ira Kaplan about wfmu. Of course.
  Fri. 2/5/10 10:45am ken:

  Fri. 2/5/10 11:03am Drummer Some:

  Fri. 2/5/10 11:10am Drummer Some:

  Fri. 2/5/10 11:33am Nat:

@Ken
That's an outstanding line up. Looking back, we lost many an opportunity to the scourge/siren call of "Emo." Sigh. Still, RIP Darby Gym.
  Fri. 2/5/10 11:34am Harvey:

  Fri. 2/5/10 11:37am nna:

  Fri. 2/5/10 11:44am Drummer Some:

@nna
Stoned, I think you mean.
  Fri. 2/5/10 11:48am Parq:

Doug, I just hope that NNA did not mean stone angel in the "Dr Who 'Blink' episode" sense.
  Fri. 2/5/10 11:54am Art Smass:

Whoremonger is one of those great old professions-turned-surnames like Smith, Cooper, Miller, and so on.
  Fri. 2/5/10 11:55am Drummer Some:

@Art Smass
You should see the record cover!
  Fri. 2/5/10 11:59am Cecile:

@art, yes, like my neighbors the Pillagers, and the Shitsweepers.

When I heard Poor Charley Akaa I come on, I knew that once again WFMU was about to launch me through a hole in the space time continuum into a heretofore unimagined musical landscape. I'm now listening to Naija Sounds In Country & Western Music, and I'm loving every note! Thank you Doug, thank you Comb & Razor!
