Guldkorn, indeed!
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:30am mark:

Hey, wasn't Teddy Pendergrass a drummer?
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:35am dc pat:

The only thing I remember about that documentary was the older jazz dudes dissing Ornette Coleman for Free Jazz. I thought that was pretty interesting. "How can you have Free Jazz?? Jazz is already free.."
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:45am seang:

Cravin some Cajun! Laissez Le Bon Temps Roulet!
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:47am listener rey:

Joe Lustig was a non-latino Palladium era mambo dancer. Great that the latin groups gave props to the dancers, no matter where they were from. Sadly I don't think any footage of his dancing survives. Would've loved to see his moves...
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:48am dc pat:

well it's not the ONLY thing I remember but that's the thing that sticks out in my memory...
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:49am ?:

Great latin set! Funny lyrics too. The baseball playing horse can belt the home runs but won't run the bases. When asked why, he responds " If I could run, I'd be at the racetrack!" LOL
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:54am Drummer Some:

LISTENER REY COMES THROUGH!!

Rey, I have been Googling for 15 minutes trying to discover who Joe Lustig was. Mil gracias!
  Fri. 1/15/10 9:55am Drummer Some:

@Chris
No, the Four Vagabonds have not been posted on the blog.

Mornin' all - listening but not commenting. work alas.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:01am listener rey:

Ooops. listener ? was me. Some more translations: vivebien means someone who lives well with no visible means of support
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:03am annie:

doug it certainly is a mutual admiration society we have here..
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:04am Cecile:

I'm sending money to Wyclef
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:04am Cecile:

  Fri. 1/15/10 10:07am annie:

how about some maya deren soundbites?? she did alot of work in haiti, didn't she?
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:09am Chris:

She did a film about voodoo right? - was that done in haiti?
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:15am annie:

i think so... i literally stumbled on that a few years ago.. mesmerizing.. just amazing
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:15am Cecile:

I love Jerry Butler's version of this.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:16am annie:

  Fri. 1/15/10 10:19am Carmichael:

Happy Friday, Woof-Moo-ers.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:20am s:

I wish this song was permanently on my alarm clock
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:21am Hugo:

It would be nice, in view of recent events, to hear something from RAM, one of the premier bands of Haiti today. Named after the singer, Richard A Morse who runs Hotel Olofsson in Port au Prince. He and his family escaped unhurt, though "freaked out". I might have a cassette lying around of old sessions for the BBC.

Couple of videos here for those interested:

I'm with Hugo--thanks for the links.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:25am still b/p:

I'm sure there will be a celebrity-heavy concert broadcast for earthquake relief. Anybody heard of one developing yet?

Speaking of celebrities...can I step on the soapbox? Took a fairly rare look at evening TV news and I found something distracting and offensive about Diane Sawyer & other network anchors putting themselves in the thick of the mess to be shown ("Here's me...here's more of me. 'I' will show you sad wretchedness & devastated humanity and how 'I' am encountering it.") wandering around on a self-indulgent misery tour, asking inane questions. Regardless of who decides on these marquee face insertions, it's essentially promotional -- at such a moment, ugh -- and it's resoundingly unnecessary in getting the reporting job done.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:31am annie:

i agree bp; that stuff turns my stomach.. commercial teevee really is abysmal
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:32am dc pat:

NPR is doing the same thing. It's detestable like these douches are just waiting for this kind of stuff to happen.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:33am George Beale:

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:33am Chris:

have you ever seen the movie "ace in the hole" with kirk douglas - very much about that stuff - great movie.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:34am listener rey:

@still/ bp
I so agree. If the networks can get a camera crew and all the entourage it takes to keep someone like Ms.Sawyer looking fresh for TV, they can certainly bring along some medical help or at least some people to help look for survivors
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:35am Carmichael:

Now we're talkin', Doug!
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:36am Carmichael:

Annie, how was the roast you cooked the other night?
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:39am dc pat:

"YOOOOOOU ARE MEDDLING WITH THE PRIMAL ORDER OF NATURE, MR. BEALE...AND I WON'T HAVE IT!!!!!!
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:40am Cecile:

rey, Anderson Cooper was the last person I remember doing anything like that.

I think they just want to get in and get out. It's pathetic
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:42am annie:

it came our great carm, i am still using the meat from it.. we've so far made three separate international dishes from it.. the last being quesadillas. i use the broth in which it cooks for rice and the veggies on top of mashed potatoes...
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:42am Emile:

I love this song, from a great and underplayed Monk record....
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:42am texas scott:

I could listen to Thelonious Monk all day...
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:43am Carmichael:

Sounds great, Annie!
Fri. 1/15/10 10:44am Sandy in Houston:

One of my bands plays Mood Indigo - thanks for playing this nice version of it.
  Fri. 1/15/10 10:47am annie:

there is so much milk and heavy cream in there, custard this weekend and channa dal.. nice small little health food store nearby where organic veggies and fruit are for sale and fresh bread from the market/cafe in between.. crocodile bread... hmmm yummy doughy deliciousness. with a stick of butter..!!
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:02am J-Mar:

Still trying to decide what I'm going to cook this weekend -- maybe something with moong dal?

Have I mentioned yet that I think FMU should have a call-in cooking show?
Fri. 1/15/10 11:03am north guinea hills:

shipp/parker/ibarra was my favorite mathew shipp lineup. saw them in florida back around the time that album was recorded.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:03am Phil:

Just started tuning in but this jazz set is great! Much thanks.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:06am Cecile:

j-mar, I thnk that's a great idea.

I'm off for a bit, but should be back before Bryce, see ya!
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:07am annie:

  Fri. 1/15/10 11:07am dragonflyshards:

'just got here...'Thankful for archives.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:13am Drummer Some:

Hey Phil and dragonflyshards,
Grab an oar and start rowing (or a bucket and start bailing).
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:20am seang:

we have a lot of haitian cab drivers here in boston, REAL NICE DUDES!
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:23am dc pat:

Hey J-Mar, I think I'm going to make Philly cheese steaks out of some Morning Star Farms fake meat at some point..
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:26am ?:

Tabou Combo used to play at SOBs here in NY, even within the last decade or so. Wonder if they're still around . . . Anyone know?
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:26am Carmichael:

I keep seeing Philly cheesesteaks on TV, but I have never eaten one. I feel culturally deprived. They look awesome.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:29am Hugo:

A good entry point to Haiti musically:

http://www.amazon.com/Rough-Guide-Music-Haiti/dp/B00005QXJT

It's been a while since I played it, though. RAM is track 8. Annotated by Any Kershaw who's been there several times, staying at Hotel Olofsson.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:29am Parq:

Hey, all. Hopelessly swamped for some time now, but had to poke my head in and endorse the proposal for a call-in cooking show. I promise that I will participate in it if it happens.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:32am J-Mar:

DC Pat, you totally have to let me know how that goes with the Philly cheese fakes.

So how do we petition for a call-in cooking show, anyway? We know would call in -- but who would host it?
Fri. 1/15/10 11:35am Sandy in Houston:

All this Haitian music is rad. I'm having way too much fun for being at work.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:37am dc pat:

Kenny G should host.

I'll let you know J-Mar--that's great, Philly cheese fakes..

Carm: they were really great when I ate cows. I'm working on the veggie version...
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:42am Carmichael:

Cows, tofu, TVP, as long as it tastes good I'll ram it in my pie hole.
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:43am annie:

i like the real thing.... soy is a no-no in my diet..
Fri. 1/15/10 11:51am north guinea hills:

i love soy and the real thing. everything is a-ok in my diet.. (except the foods my body doesn't like :( )
  Fri. 1/15/10 11:52am annie:

i miss aged cheeses the most...
Fri. 1/15/10 11:55am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the Haiti set. May God help those poor people there.
