Playlist for The Media Squat with Douglas Rushkoff - September 14, 2009

WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

The Media Squat is freeform, bottom-up, open source radio looking towards similarly open source, bottom-up solutions to some of the problems engendered by our relentlessly top-down society.

Each show will initiate a series of discussions, which will themselves comprise part of an expanding wiki of resources, support material, and community-generated content.

This isn't pure '60s or Whole Earth radicalism and self-sufficiency (though it's certainly related) but a 21st Century, cyberpunk reclamation of all technologies and social contracts as essentially open source, up for discussion, and open to modification. It's an application of the hacker ethic and net collectivism to everything, done in the spirit of fun and adventure.

Ongoing forums with host, guests, and listeners take place at http://www.mediasquat.net.

Welcome to The Media Squat.

Douglas, you're dreaming if you think that some people who are into "e-merce" (Buzz-word alert :-) are actually going to drag their heads out of their butts.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:09pm From: Charles-A.

Traditional (non-ad-supported media) are "real people" doing "real things" and they don't have to worry about the internet.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:12pm From: Charles-A.

The e-merce people are stuck because the ad-supported, scarce resource model which relies on there being a space where they can operate, well they're screwed.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:18pm From: Charles-A.

Soon we'll have our guest: David Pescovitz.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:28pm From: Charles-A.

Yo jeff, I thought so too. And the futurist guest (David Pescovitz) is a lot of fun.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:33pm From: Charles-A.

Its wrong to think that knowledge is harmful, but the use of knowledge may be harmful. Its a real conundrum.

Mon. 9/14/09 6:41pm From: Charles-A.

God as an emergent phenomenon. Sounds good to me...

Mon. 9/14/09 6:45pm From: Charles-A.

"Fortean mind" reminds me of my youth. I used to think about all kinds of fun stuff like that when I was young. (and again last week. :-)
