Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - August 4, 2009

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:05pm From: G

you didn't need to call EMS to get access to the studio, we hope!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:07pm From: john

So this is what Queen would have sounded like without those asinine "No Synthesizers" notices on the back of the sleeve...better!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:20pm From: efd

hi everyone! or hi john and G, at least!

john, good point re Aviary vs Queen!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:24pm From: Brendan

All rock no talk tonight Evan?

Tue. 8/4/09 11:24pm From: Greg from Detroit

I love hearing Game Theory on the Evan "Funk" Davies show.

Tue. 8/4/09 11:25pm From: dustin

is this Game Theory song a response to Tom's comment or just a coincidence?

Tue. 8/4/09 11:27pm From: efd

There's no such thing as coincidence.

Tue. 8/4/09 11:30pm From: Sybil

I just got home... and Evan's Theme was on! Yay!!!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:31pm From: Sybil

Uh-oh, looks like I missed a whole story... EMS?

Tue. 8/4/09 11:33pm From: G

Tom more or less lost the will to live and offered to let efd start 25 minutes early -- hopefully the suicie hotline wasn't dragged in

Tue. 8/4/09 11:34pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

The only thing snooty about Varese Sarabande is their name (I have to stick up for my friend Cary Mansfield and company here).

Tue. 8/4/09 11:41pm From: efd

fair enough, Michael! I guess I was also automatically (and unfairly) putting all soundtracks in the "snooty" category.

hi Sybil!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:41pm From: Sybil

I should know better than to be away from a radio or internet connection at any time, even for a minute, on Tuesdays!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:43pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

EFD--the soundtracks aren't all that they do. Lots of good compilations (my favorite--Tony Burrows, who was the lead singer of Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, the Brotherhood of Man, First Class and the Pipkins all British one hit wonders). They did a great early Warren Zevon album too among many great things

Tue. 8/4/09 11:49pm From: efd

huh, i had no idea! clearly i made an incorrect snap judgement - thanks for the info!

on a different topic, what the heck is happening in the Red Sox game??

Tue. 8/4/09 11:50pm From: Sybil

Red Sox may have to do the equivalent of letting Mark Loretta pitch if this game goes on much longer... 2-2, bottom 12th.

Tue. 8/4/09 11:51pm From: john

In other words, absolutely nothing!

Tue. 8/4/09 11:54pm From: Sybil

Manny HR in LA

Tue. 8/4/09 11:58pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

Consider it endorsed!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:02am From: hipsters

no, you're right. 1:30 is way too fucking early, man.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:02am From: Laurie

This one time, Andrew W.K. linked to an ONTD entry via his twitter. And I got hella embarrassed, because I made some obscene comments as is my wont on ONTD.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:05am From: Hideous Lump

The Mitch Easter version of "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" is available on the bubblegum tribute comp "Right to Chews."

Wed. 8/5/09 12:07am From: Sybil

Evan Longoria HR bottom 13th. That's all she wrote.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:09am From: efd

dammit, this is no time for Evans In The News!

H. Lump, thanks for the tip on that comp! I have a feeling that version would sound very different from the one I saw but I'm curious to check it out.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:10am From: john

That comp is great. I'd dig it out if I could ever find anything here. I tried arranging all the CDs by height, apparently.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:12am From: efd

ha!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:13am From: @BunnyKickButt

Hello efd. PFT tweeted about you so I thought I'd check you out.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:15am From: BunnyKickButt

I had to do MATH to post. I'm sweating.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:15am From: Danne D

Hello EFD and all you funky folks :)
Welcome aboard Bunny- you'll love Evan's show!
Evan did you happen to see my e-mail?

Wed. 8/5/09 12:16am From: Math

I'm tough. Deal.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:16am From: Sybil

It's not MATH, it's frackin' arithmetic. Trust me, not the same at all. If it were Math, I could do it. Grr.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:16am From: efd

Thanks for stopping by, @BunnyKickButt! hope I can live up to the expectations set by a @PFTompkins tweet!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:16am From: georgie

one of my favorite PIL trax!!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:17am From: BunnyKickButt

Me too, efd! :)

Wed. 8/5/09 12:18am From: risky!

yo PiL! Funk GET IT! GO N GET EM!!!!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:19am From: BunnyKickButt

efd, have you ever heard of Daniel Amos?

Wed. 8/5/09 12:19am From: Math

631 + 4 + ???????

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:21am From: BunnyKickButt

Math is taunting me.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:22am From: efd

Danne, I did get your email and will get back to you on that tomorrow.

BunnyKickButt, I have not, unless by chance you're referring to Danny Amis of Raybeats/Los Straitjackets fame, bur you're probably not.

Georgie and risky, glad you're enjoying the PiL!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:22am From: Sybil

It's not Math. I knew Math. Math was a friend of mine. You, sir, are no Math.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:23am From: Math

I'm not a bad egg in the long run. If you like runny eggs.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:25am From: efd

guess what I found in the library...

Wed. 8/5/09 12:26am From: hmm...

a perv in the stacks?

Wed. 8/5/09 12:26am From: randy in NC

Anyone else having issues with the 128K MP3 stream?

Wed. 8/5/09 12:28am From: Danne D

Thanks Evan :) Hopefully we can spread some good cheer.

Interested by the reaction to FMU's underground Math Operation :)

As to what you found, EFD, I dunno, but I found Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_ssR7M5Px0
which I last saw in high school. Basically the one thing I got out of it was learning how to play angles on a pool table.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:28am From: Sybil

My 128K stream is fine, which is amazing given I'm also watching mlb.tv and have this live comments thing running.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:30am From: Sybil

That pool table thing - that's Math.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:31am From: expectant

No one's gonna ask what the bed music is??? That's ok, a week off would work too!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:32am From: Sybil

We can't ask. Joe's not here.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:33am From: Math

For years I earned my living as a pool hustler

Wed. 8/5/09 12:33am From: Danne D

Yup, Sybil. Though Geometry is the math that I basically sucked at. Actually have a baseball story to go with it. My 9th Grade Geometry teacher was the wife of former major league manager Jim Fregosi.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:35am From: Sybil

That is very cool, Danne.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:37am From: Chuck E. Jesus

can't believe i missed Pil, but i enjoyed the Mitch Easter....

Wed. 8/5/09 12:37am From: randy in NC

MP3 now OK, but missed the Mitch Easter to compare with Saturday. Archives...

Wed. 8/5/09 12:38am From: efd

Randy, that's too bad - I was hoping you could provide a second opinion!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:39am From: Danne D

Ya, though our honors geometry class was pretty unruly actually. I tend to think I'm the least hipsterish FMU listener given that my degree is in *ulp* statistics of all things. I'm also a recovering actuary.

To Bunny: so do you know from the, like 10 years of archives here on FMU? If you like this edition of Evan's show you can commence worshiping him 24/7 via the magic of archives :) Evan is one of FMU's humbler deities I might add :)

Wed. 8/5/09 12:40am From: BunnyKickButt

efd, have a listen to Daniel Amos at the itunes store. Pick a song you would like to play and I'll mail you a dollar.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:41am From: BunnyKickButt

Must say I'm really enjoying the show and will have my fill of neato music.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:41am From: Sybil

BunnyKickButt shows up here and already she's (he's?) trying to bribe the host..

Wed. 8/5/09 12:42am From: BunnyKickButt

teehee

Wed. 8/5/09 12:43am From: Danne D

LOL, some catch on quicker than others I guess Sybil :o)

Wed. 8/5/09 12:43am From: Danne D

too bad EFD is uncorruptable :)

Wed. 8/5/09 12:44am From: BunnyKickButt

Is a dollar the going rate?

Wed. 8/5/09 12:44am From: BunnyKickButt

It's funny, but we all want people to love the music we love.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:45am From: efd

that sounds an awful lot like payola to me! On a small scale, granted, but still...!

Wed. 8/5/09 12:45am From: A Principle

No one is utterly incorruptible.

Ratchet up the amount till you get your way.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:46am From: BunnyKickButt

Just reimbursing the cost of the song. heheh

Wed. 8/5/09 12:46am From: Math

99 cents then

Wed. 8/5/09 12:47am From: Sybil

You can't fool me. You're not Math, you're Accounting.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:47am From: BunnyKickButt

99 pennies coming your way efd

Wed. 8/5/09 12:48am From: BunnyKickButt

This math thing is coming back to me. Like riding a bike.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:48am From: Math

I do GAAP as a sideline.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:49am From: Danne D

Hmm, though maybe Evan can be corrupted by cookies. As long as he eats the evidence and doesn't leave a trail of crumbs he should be good.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:50am From: Sybil

Just stay away from the Wall Street stuff. Frackin' Quants gave us all a bad name.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:50am From: john

Great show tonight! p<.0001.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:51am From: john

And as a twice-recovering Wall Streeter, let me just say that quants gave the rest of US a bad name.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:51am From: Sybil

That's very significant.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:53am From: john

I'm very confident.

Wed. 8/5/09 12:55am From: Math

Quants are my evil twin. Just like 999 upside down becomes 666.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:02am From: Georgie

I, just like efd, can't seem to get enough of this Bare Wires 7".

Wed. 8/5/09 1:03am From: efd

Sybil, here's another one for the "not *that* [song title]" show. I'm starting to think maybe that should be my 2010 marathon premium theme.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:05am From: Sybil

I was actually surprised when "gimme gimme good lovin" WAS "that" song. I'm beginning to expect otherwise.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:06am From: efd

Georgie, glad I'm not the only one!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:06am From: Danne D

That sounds like an excellent idea Evan :)

Wed. 8/5/09 1:10am From: G

Could it be that I haven't heard this since aboiut 1974???

Wed. 8/5/09 1:12am From: efd

G, that's very possible.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:13am From: Sybil

G, only if you're not a long-time listener to efd's show. Or Monica.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:13am From: G

They were playing it on La Difusora radio in Brasil when I moved there from England... That's how I guessed the year before you even posted it...

Wed. 8/5/09 1:14am From: Sybil

(Just guessing about Monica, but I'm 99% confident about efd.)

Wed. 8/5/09 1:23am From: john

I was hoping this new TVPs single would turn up somewhere. Brilliant as ever!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:25am From: Joshua K

I am late to the party.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:25am From: Sybil

I can't believe I didn't choose this as one of my premiums. :(

Wed. 8/5/09 1:26am From: efd

there might be half a slice of cake left...

Wed. 8/5/09 1:27am From: Sybil

Not that I'm unhappy with my other choices, that is!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:33am From: johnny rivers

secret agent man, secret agent man!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:37am From: G

I bet that's Guimaraes -- it's a common name in Portuguese...

Wed. 8/5/09 1:38am From: BunnyKickButt

Goodnight good people. Thanks for the tunes, efd. I'll visit another night. I will now do my last bit of math for the evening.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:39am From: Math

tx for being so submissive :-P

Wed. 8/5/09 1:43am From: blancofunk

thanks fer the heads up on the black rio-2 release.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:44am From: efd

goodnight BKB - thanks for stopping by!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:44am From: G

btw, "e o grupo som sagrado" = "and the sacred sound group" -- i thought it might be obvious, but maybe not...

Wed. 8/5/09 1:44am From: john

I heartily endorse the endorsement. There is at present an ex-shelter cat under the covers and a rescue dog under the bed. Sadly, that means I'm relegated to a far corner of the room, but the pets are happy. Except regarding the presence of the other. Welcome to Growl And Hiss Central.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:46am From: risky!

THE SPITS! GET EM FUNK! FUCKIN GET THEEEM!!!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:48am From: efd

nice, John,

G, thanks - I got "sagrado" thanks to my recent Barcelona trip, but not the rest of it.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:49am From: Sybil

Thanks for verifying my suspicion, G.

BTW I saw a horror flick from Spain, English title "The Nameless", and it turned out to be in Catalan. I was very pleased with myself for figuring that out. Didn't help much with understanding what they were saying, though.

Wed. 8/5/09 1:52am From: G

Spain's cool -- haven't been there since 92 -- every region's different...

Wed. 8/5/09 1:58am From: Danne D

Goodnight good people! :)

EFD, thanks for another excellent show!

Wed. 8/5/09 1:59am From: Sybil

Goodnight, Danne! I agree totally!

Sun. 8/9/09 12:14am From: Joe

checking out the show now... that billion dollar babies single might be my most favorite cover art in recent memory
