Playlist for The Media Squat with Douglas Rushkoff - July 20, 2009

Mondays 6pm - 7pm on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

The Media Squat is freeform, bottom-up, open source radio looking towards similarly open source, bottom-up solutions to some of the problems engendered by our relentlessly top-down society.

Each show will initiate a series of discussions, which will themselves comprise part of an expanding wiki of resources, support material, and community-generated content.

This isn't pure '60s or Whole Earth radicalism and self-sufficiency (though it's certainly related) but a 21st Century, cyberpunk reclamation of all technologies and social contracts as essentially open source, up for discussion, and open to modification. It's an application of the hacker ethic and net collectivism to everything, done in the spirit of fun and adventure.

Ongoing forums with host, guests, and listeners take place at http://www.mediasquat.net.

Listener comments!

Mon. 7/20/09 6:00pm From: Charlesd-A.

Tonight we have Reverend Billy Talen preaching about NYC neighborhoods via revbilly.com

Mon. 7/20/09 6:04pm From: Charles-A.

Amen, Reverend Billy, in the house.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:06pm From: Charles-A.

Its all about living in the hood, not existing strapped to a hood.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:07pm From: Charles-A.

Amen brother. Its all about local economies...

Mon. 7/20/09 6:11pm From: Charles-A.

Like Shrub Bush said: "When the tough get shot at, the tough go shopping." Uh, for Kalahnokovs? No silly, buy a boat, you'll wish you had in Nor-leenz, bubba.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:14pm From: Charles-A.

What we're doing is getting fed up. People are making do because the have to. The corporation are doing a f*ckin' thing.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:17pm From: Charles-A.

Threats is what they expect. Being nice and reasonab;e throws them for a loop.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:19pm From: Charles-A.

New Yorkers after 9/11 were actually pretty decent human beings. Now meh. Not so much.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:22pm From: Charles-A.

Corporations are just great. And United Breaks Guitars. (Google it :-) Its might even be staged, or I could just be cynical...

Mon. 7/20/09 6:25pm From: Charles-A

Protest songs are a double edged sword. (Cause the cops are playing their own music [and the percussion is usually followed by concussion.])

Mon. 7/20/09 6:29pm From: Charles-A.

Were going into the second half of the show with Douglas Rushkoff and featuring Reverend Billy Talen

Mon. 7/20/09 6:32pm From: Charles-A.

I'd be afraid of her too. :-)

Mon. 7/20/09 6:35pm From: Charles-A.

Rich White Guilt getting you down?

Send them out to shop for shoes, and a jacket.

The good part of the economic meltdown is that we're all broke-ass poor. (It just some of us are REALLY poor.)

Mon. 7/20/09 6:38pm From: Charles-A.

The world doesn't belong to pre-pubescent youths. If only it did...

Mon. 7/20/09 6:41pm From: Charles-A.

Its not food, its the "promise" of food.

Wall street, where I worked, rapes and paves the neighborhood and makes it all into a strip mall. (And you're the one being stripped.)

Mon. 7/20/09 6:45pm From: Charles-A.

Now the cop is a white 20-something parachuted from the burbs into the great dirty unknown. (And people get their asses shot.)

Mon. 7/20/09 6:47pm From: Charles-A.

The old characters of the fifties have been replaced by the slave laborers of the aughts.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:49pm From: Charles-A.

Get angry and laugh, low, loud and "in your face."

Mon. 7/20/09 6:51pm From: Charles-A.

Its useless to get angry, that's what they're geared up to fight.

Buy 'em a beer, invite 'em to a barbeque, and be unashamed to be reasonable.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:56pm From: Charles-A.

Just tell 'em you're broke. Starbucks will go away.

Mon. 7/20/09 6:58pm From: Charles-A.

Don't get me started on health care...

Mon. 7/20/09 7:00pm From: Charles-A.

We're done for this week.

Mon. 7/20/09 10:55pm From: Brian Oregon
