Orson Welles said one of the reasons they put on the original broadcast was to teach people that they couldn't rely on everything they heard on the radio. So, I'd say going with the goal of satirizing sensationalist media could be a way of not feeling so bad about the whole thing.

Some useless swine flu facts:
Conspiracy theory people blame the Swine flu inoculations back in the 70’s as part of a government plot to spread aids. Also they believed Swine flu was part of a germ warfare experiment that went wrong.

The film “Dawn of the Dead” is based on the Swine Flu outbreak.
