I remember seeing Auggie Busch Sr. riding around waving at the crowd on the beer wagon pulled by the Clydesdales with the Budweiser theme booming over the stadium with Stan Khan, probably, at the organ during the 7th inning stretch at Busch Stadium as a kid. Now all you get is a commercial on the Jumbotron.

Modern baseball-going, like modern movie-going, is now merely an exercise in gathering people to expose them to commercial messages. Those of you gearing up to spend time at one of NYC's shiny new Corporate Sponsor Stadiums can have it.

@Parq - sports arenas were ALWAYS filled with commercial messages. Take a look at some old-timey photos from the 50s if you don't believe me. Hell, arguably the most famous feature of Ebbets Field was an ad (Hit sign, win suit). Old and quaint or not, ads are ads.

w/r/t Rod Stewart, a friend of mine draws a demarcation line between Rod Stewart the musician and Rod Stewart the celebrity--a point well taken. Phil Collins too, although in his case the "musician" part is debatable. And Eric Clapton. And lots of others, now that I think about it.

Had Morrison lived to see the rise of disco I imagine he could have been tempted by the pure sexuality of it all, but I am sure I would have been able to rein him in and help him see that the trade of sensuality wasn’t worth the loss of artistic merit. I liked him when he was MCing for Los Straitjackets and the Pontani Sisters. He reminds me of Jackie Gleason - big but light on his feet.
