dan, the first time i heard african/arabic yodelling was in a poor suburb of cairo 2003; it is sang on happy occasions and is called 'zaggareya', i believe. An enormous open-back truck cruised past us piled sky-high with a newly married couples entire possesions, and women and children on top of that yodelling their heads off! It was an incredible sight and sound.
