"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot."

XYME was the first song Jimmy Maravel gave me to learn when I joined his band as a guitarist for SHOW OF HANDS in the 80s. He and his brother Lee (who later joined the band after leaving his own Gabriel-esque band, INTUITION, were completely unique. So sorry they both left this world much, much too soon. Can you send me an MP3? I have it on cassette somewhere but...

I lived in Chelsea in a loft building with Jimmy and Lee. I dated their sister Dina at the time. My God what happened to them? Is their brother Gene still around and what happened to Dina? I really hope she's ok. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Susan:
Hey, Tom Hart. I may have met you at one of the parties they had in that loft. I went out with Lee when we were young, 19 or 20, and bumped into him throughout the years. I think he may have died from hepatits, sometime within the past three years and I know he left behind a young son. I think Jimmy died a year or two before Lee but I'm not sure. I wish I could find Dina too. Seems like she suffered a lot of loss in a short period of time. If you find out, please leave a note here and I will check back.

hi, Jimmy was one of my best friends in Boston - I miss him greatly. I met and spoke with Lee afterward but sadly he died also. I loved their mother who just died a few months ago. I miss you Jimmy. He was a brilliant musician but mainly an angel of a person.

Robert Dobbs (Poppa Docs):
"Justice and Sundown" (a rock opera), written by Lee Maravel, performed by his band Amber Waves. Was soooooooo great. I really sucked as their manager, otherwise this great musican and his great three person band should have become another "Emerson Lake and Palmer". (i.e., Amber Waves: Lee, Billy & Paul (at the loft). Then Paul (bass) left Amber Waves and Lee, Billy, Jimmy (Lee's brother) and myself (Bob Dobbs) moved to Willow, NY (Woodstock) for about a year.

Hello Suzzie, if that's you! (i.e., your "dad was a dentist" in Riverdale! ...That Suzzie! LOL!). Love to hear from you! I'm in Florida (...a 62 year old, taking care of my 90 year old mother!). How about our pad on Bleeker Street? LOL! rbdjr@ymail.com Love you still! LOL!

Robert Dobbs (Poppa Docs):
I will always vision Lee "playing his LeSage accoustic electric piano and his accoustic electric guitar. Plus Lee, "on the mellotron". How cool was that! And Lee's "foot peddals" too! Add in his wonderful voice and his great lyrics! Yikes! I'm a 62 year-old man crying now! Just remembering Lee "pulling on those" those long magnetic tapes in his Mellotron in the loft. It seems like yesterday! I miss you! (Jimmy too!).

Robert Dobbs (Poppa Docs):
Tom Harte, hello! I wonder if Mary (Dina's roommate) is the same Mary who married Davis Gorel (aka: Animal Gronk) i.e., David Gorelnick (not sure of the spelling?). David did most of stage lighting for Lee's band (Amber Waves' "loft-days era gigs"). I do think we are talking about the same Mary! Dave worked as a union 'Broadway stage hand'. Both David and Mary bought "his and her" harleys and "drove-off in the sunset together (in Queens).

Robert Dobbs:
Hello Jack, ever hear Lee's "Arms Across The Globe"? I think of that song, almost daily and remember, just what a talented composer Lee was! And a kind person too! That song was the "one and only" I ever shared "copyrights" with (Lee). I simply had an idea for a song about an earthquake and at the same time, a very bad blizzard in of all places, Turkey. Thousands were left homeless, and were freezing to death. I asked, "Lee, can you write me a theme song about this tragic emergency "right away", that I can bring to Atlantic Records (as the President of Atlantic was Turkish). Lee spent the next 2 days (without any sleep! which was not all that uncommon then! LOL!) doing research at the public library, plus locking himself in "at the loft" putting together words and music of this "bone chilling" cry for help called, "Arms Across The Globe". My idea was to do a fundraiser, sponsered by Atlantic Records ("free concert", big bands, etc. to raise money to buy blankets, food and shelter, for people that were "freezing cold" and dying). I'm haunted (in a good way) by our song, and I always will. Lee, I do miss you! With luv, RD

Mary and Dave went seperate ways eventually and Dave passed away a few years back. They do have two grown children. Lee and I talked to the ny finest about the lost bird ! nuff said hahaha ! I remember that mime at the loft too ! and yes Amber Waves at Bayshore Theater.

Robert Dobbs:
Yeah Wynand! Those were the days! Wow! Just thinking of Amber Waves doing their rock opera "Justice and Sundown" at the band shell in Forest Park, Queens, and getting a fabulous "Village Voice review" for that show, ...or traveling "Upstate" to Brewster, to play the "Fore N' Aft", or how about their gigs Max's Kansas City? Once we did a showcase at Max's for Mario Medius (The Big "M"), President of Manticore records, plus, at that time, Mario was managing Emerson Lake and Palmer. Mario really flipped over the boys (Lee, Paul and Billy) and he wanted to record Amber Waves in Scotland. Unfortunately, things didn't materialize for us, as The Big "M" (Mario) and ELP went their separate ways (...think also ELP broke-up, soon after our showcase? Just don't remember?)... The band was really "hyped" with the prospect of going to Europe and record (if I remember, I think the studio was in a Scottish castle). The "ups and downs" of the music business! I have not spoken to the surviving Amber Waves members (Paul & Billy) in many years. Anyone out there, have a clue what Billy Callahan (drummer) is doing now? Or Paul (Bass, vocals) is up to? Hope they are both in great health? I'd love to contact both! Help? Luv Robert

?:
Hi there Bobby! I can not tell you how truly devastated I was when through my research I discovered that Lee was no longer living. He died from lung cancer in Dec. 2006. For others: I was Billy Callahan's girlfriend and lived in the loft on 30th St. from Feb. 1976 to May? June? 1978. Of the three members of Amber Waves it's Lee I remained friends with through the mid 1980s. I was in touch with him again via email in 2000 and then 2005, he had been living in California and then Florida. He didn't tell me then that Jimmy had died, but never followed through on a phone call so I started to dig and that's when I found they were both gone. Lee left behind a wife, Yvette (who I've never had contact with) and a son who's now 11 or 12. I've had little success finding Billy and Paul. Suzanne (Suzi) has beeen living in Australia for over 20 years. She has a son, Julian, 17. As far I can tell Dina (birthname: Constance) is married to Chuck (Charles) Terzella and living in Penn Valley, CA, but no public phone number. Me? Living in Minnesota for the past 7 years. A data analyst at the Mayo Clinic. Married for 20 years to my film maker husband Bruce. 4 kids, 3 girls and the youngest a boy, 15, 12, 12, and 10. My kids still don't know that I left home at 16 and moved in my boyfriend and his band. Someday. Amber Waves. Justice and Sundown. Max's Kansas City. Bob and Suzi's Bleecker St. apt. It really was a time. Truly sorry I have NO photos from then. If anyone would like to email me: melanie@sherman.net Peace to all, Melanie

Oh and in the spirit of remembering Lee through my research some months back I found this thread of his on loopers delight. It is so much the essence of who he was, for those who knew him I just had to share it: • To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com • From: Lee Maravel <leemaravel@yahoo.com> • Subject: What a loop has to say... • Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2006 05:34:38 -0800 (PST) ________________________________________ There are several points that I surprisingly have not seen brought up as to the inherent value of looping. I can expand my sonic palette, so to speak while in the process. My expression is no longer limited by the availability of other musicians. Also, and for me the most important aspect, is the ability to place myself in an environment where I'm "working without a net"- I sold all the gear I had that had an "undo" or "erase" function to achieve this. Once your in your in. No pussyfooting. I've played keyboards for over 30 years starting with piano. The first stage is the "naive" phase where you're getting your feet wet and there is a sense of wonder in playing even (and because of) tho you have no knowledge as to theory + technique. Simple things sound great. 2nd stage we try to gain control, technique and understanding of the music process. We want to be respected as "musicians" and learn theory to make "sense" of what we're doing. A lot of the fun is replaced with a sense of small strides + accomplishments laboriously exercising muscles repetitiously. At this point I was a victim of my own cliches. 3rd stage is the beauty. Technique becomes second nature. All the knowledge + tools we've developed fade to a place deep within us and we approach playing music more like we did in the 1st phase where it was actually exciting. No mental exercises. No being clever. No illusion of control. And yet, we've expanded our vocabularies so that we're capable of much more but not bound by it. Years ago I became bored with everything I played. I tried many ways to "jump start" my creative process. I traded in my extensive midi keyboard gear and opted to go back to pure piano ala Keith Jarrett (not as good but who is?)-That was great for 10 minutes 'till I had the old nagging feeling that there was still something missing. Sold the piano gear and tried to play the stick with a midi hookup. This was an attempt to recapture the naive 1st stage and recreate my early learning process. Got frustrated after 8 months and gained a new appreciation for my keyboard proficiency. For me, music is discovery. It's exploration. I create nothing but am afforded the privilege of being a portal where the music can pass through. The music is simply better than I'll ever be. Looping is about fear and trust if I'm doing it right + keeping myself (ego) out of it. There are no mistakes. I currently use a Boomerang+ and a Lexicon Vortex. Sound sources are a Wavestation SR and a Korg N1r. All this is triggered by a Roland AX-1 controller (strap-on) with a ribbon. The ribbon is essential for it allows me to achieve a more intimate contact with the notes for vibrato, pitch bend, hammer-ons, whatever. I always envied the string players ability to "touch" the sound source. A trade-off I suppose, for most guitarists I know try hard to "change" their sounds which comes easier to keyboardists. I've gotten off track. Appropriate. Thanks for letting me share. (:> We loop because we can- Lee Maravel

Hearing about Lee's passing (and Jimmy's AND his Mom!) has made me very sad. Lee and I hung out a lot as seniors in high school - very magical times - the kind you don't ever forget. I hope Gene and Dina are well. Peace Profound to all.

All this about Jimmy, Lee, Dina and their wonderful, artistic Mom, Ginny, blows me away. I lived with Jimmy through our Oneonta college years in the 70's and miss him and Lee terribly. I'm so sorry to hear of Ginny's passing but I hope that Dina and Gene are thriving somewhere. It's great to hear from so many touched by Jimmy and Lee artistically and personally. I gotta bring out my pics of JM......

My brother is coming down from E 43 to visit us here in South Florida! Brother Keith has been playing guitar for over 60 years so I figured he'd really flip out for a night of blues n' rock! I blew $200 for an upcoming gig at the "Hard Rock-Live" in Hollywood FLA. Tickets to see Joe Bonamassa and Co. OMG! Joe Bonamassa was born in 1977! Yikes! I got a Jean Jacket from the "Loft Days" ...older than he! LOL!

Wow..dont know how i found this..but its been amazing to read..I lived with Lee and Billy and Paul and Judy and Melanie in the loft.. Years later I wrote a memoir about those times and getting pregnant with lee's child and what happened. I managed to find Lee and send him the memoir and we rekindled a friendship and he came up with his son..five years old at the time and stayed with me and my partner in our apartment in Manhattan.. We spent an important couple of days together where we were able to talk about the past..and then I heard Jimmy died and we lost touch and I had no idea that Lee had died until today (Bobby i was living in ft. lauderdale from 2008-2011)..but now am back in NY rest IN peace Lee. I miss you and loved you..Janessa
