This is for you, Irwin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcthSZ9k5hc

Namibian schoolkids singing Madonna's "Like a Prayer."

I love the accompanying text:

"I used to teach religion in rural Namibia. The plan was to create my own religion and use it to indoctrinate my students, the other teacher would do the same with her class, and our summative assessment would be a holy war on the school soccer pitch. I taught them Madonna instead."
  3:19pm
Sean Daily:

It was the beat, man... the beat made me do it...

  3:31pm
Laura L:

Irwin, artist Arnie Roth was just here to drop off some art for a book I'm designing (yes another one)--he personally knew Jim Flora, Steinweiss, and knows very well the music of Raymond Scott--I mentioned Raymond Scott to him in regard to explaining who you are, not knowing it is the centenary b.d.! Serendipity! He was delighted with the 2 Flora books and that a 3rd is on the way.

Jake:

Anybody near MI want to toss back a couple white russians and watch Lebowski tonight?
  3:47pm
GP:

A finger snappin, toe tappin, bass slappin, hip shakin, groovin afternoon to everyone.

Jake,
Please define "near"
  3:52pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

OH is near MI...but not Cincinnati and Mackinaw.
  3:52pm
steve:

Am I likely to find an mp3 of You Are My Junkie on the wfmu blog? It's so incorrect I've gotta have it.
  4:00pm
Jake:

Yeah, I should clarify. It's Marquette. If anybody is near this town I'll be dumbfounded. Just thought I'd pass the party along to y'all.
  4:03pm
gumby:

Is Marquette near the Upper Penninsula where Jim Harrison writes all those wonderful books about?
  4:06pm
Jake:

Oh yes. Smack dab in the middle of the wonderful UP.
  4:06pm
GP:

Long way from Texas, but I will raise a virtual glass to the dude. I lived in Farmington and Ann Arbor for about 2 years. Thanks for the invite.
  4:08pm
GP:

I used to love how everyone would instinctively raise their hand ,mitten-like , and point with the other hand when giving directions as to where places were in Michigan.
  4:08pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Shouldn't The Dude be properly capitalized? The spelling of 'the dude', I mean?
  4:10pm
GP:

10-4 on that AAP...typing too fast
  4:15pm
AnAnonymousParty:

AAP? Hey, I've been acronymized, I'm acrimonious!

You know, I think Rick Rondone performed in the 'Miss Kitty's Saloon' show at Six Flags in St. Louis last summer. Or at least it was a convincing simulation.
  4:17pm
Swami:

First he's big, then he's small. then he jumps on those blocks! Then he dances around the pretty mannequins in Power Station and then he dies autoerotically asphyxiated.
  4:20pm
gumby:

Swami,
Is that Robert Palmer of Zlad's "Love Rocket" that seems to suffer from confined spaces?
  4:21pm
Swami:

That I don't know, but I do know that he didn't mean to turn on Michael Hutchence.
  4:22pm
Sean Daily:

This Jaunties song makes me happy. It makes me want to sing along. It makes me want to shoot my gun.

But I don't know what it means!
  4:23pm
cosmic:

ooh! ow! thats better..
  4:24pm
AnAnonymousParty:

I'm no expert, but I believe 'Screen Test' was actually in the key of H-flat.
  4:29pm
cosmic:

im no expert but this sounds like jazz
  4:34pm
Peter K.:

The Bad Plus has performed on your show, and you didn't know what instrument Ethan Iverson plays until you looked it up? Shame, shame.
  4:36pm
Irwin:

I can plead senility, Peter. It's one of the privileges of senior citizenry.
  4:39pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

glitter and cheese sandwich
  4:40pm
gumby:

Wow, this is even over the top for the Carpenters. It's like the 11 of cheesey.
  4:42pm
Hooty Sapperticker:

Orange County in the hay-owse!
  4:43pm
Nitro:

No way, gumby. Clay Pigeon played a more stripped down version of this song. I think it was on his A to Z show in Dec. 2006. It was really great.
  4:43pm
maria:

who is the Karen Carpenter of today?
  4:44pm
Lizardner Dave:

Dunno....let me check the women's room at around 2pm.
  4:47pm
Sean Daily:

NIIIIIIICE cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows".
  4:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Cat Power is the Karen Carpenter of today.
  4:49pm

  4:49pm

was the stalling 'powerhouse' a scott thing?
  4:51pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Actually Jens Lekman or Sondre Lerche would be even better Karen Carpenters of today...or that guy Carpenter, what's his name?
  4:52pm
Joe:

John?
  4:53pm
John:

yes?
  4:53pm
gumby:

I say the Spongetech guy is the Karen Carpenter today. Because he's trying to sell you a product with the soft soap already in it.
  4:54pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Karen Carpenter played a mean set of drums too.
  4:55pm
maria:

yeah, I agree w. Irwing about =not cat power. It is a more difficult question than it appears.
  4:55pm
Lizardner Dave:

Maria-
Oh. Never mind then.
  4:56pm
GP:

mmmm, Julianna Hatfield.....
Karen Carpenter was great and loved for a reason..she had talent....but dang, they sure made some cheesy sounds back then.
  4:56pm
noel:

Every good Sonic Youth fan should have a healthy background knowledge of The Carpenters.
  4:57pm
maria:

Don't know how this will play here, but... here's Bloom County's take (circa 1986) on filthy cheap oil.

A shouting choir. Coolness.
  5:57pm
AnAnonymousParty:

I like the Paul Anka cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit" better. This one smells like something else.
  5:57pm
Joe:

This sounds disconcertingly similar to the band I played with in 7th grade.
  5:58pm
Parq:

The other night in a bar, I heard "Smells Like" performed by a trio of trumpet, sousaphone and snare drum. Well why the heck not?
  5:59pm
Joe:

Oh my god IT IS ME
  6:00pm
Sean Daily:

This is what "Smells Like" SHOULD have sounded like. I just wish they could play their instruments...
  6:00pm
AnAnonymousParty:

It just goes to show you how when something becomes a cultural icon, it transcends the needs for traditional instrumentation.
  5:22pm
steve:

Is that mostly Keith Jarrett on the Rip Rig & Panic track?
  9:20pm
Gail:

A friend of mine in Los Angeles was recording with an engineer who worked with Karen. They bonded over his memories of Karen. He loved her. She would come to work with a big bag of knitting and just keep a low profile until she was "released". He told my friend that Karen was such a natural that each time she opened her mouth the same quality sound would come through.

In a parallel universe, Karen left L.A. and lived.
