Tidawt + Polka Madre

Hear this show now: RealAudio | Add or read comments

Two very different WFMU live performance debuts in one show.

Tidawt (playing the Highline Ballroom Sept 22 along with a screening of the film Amanei, Touareg Entre Dunes et Montagnes) is a compelling Tuareg guitar band from Niger in West Africa led by Hasso Akotey. Akotey and his bandmates came together as they fought in the 90s Tuareg rebellion in Niger. The New York unit of TIdawt is a stripped-down version of the band, just guitars and percussion, but very similar in style and intensity to, for example, Tinariwen, the Tuareg band that has toured extensively in the US. Tidawt recently finished recording a new cd Amawal (Tantrum Records) in California, to be released soon.

Special thanks to the Nomad Foundation, Tidawt's hosts in the US. The Nomad Foundation is a California-based organization dedicated to preserving traditional arts in Niger. And it provides aid and support to the nation's nomadic communities, currently battling foreign encroachment into their territories for uranium development and continuing struggles for rights in the Southern Sahara.

Polka Madre is a Balkan / Polka / thrash mashing Mexican / Euro / US combo that sprung forth from Jueves de Karmer, a warehouse / performance space and ground zero for artists, musicians, outsiders and bohemian types in Mexico City. In addition to spearheading Mexico City's nascent Balkan / E. European scene with their sonic onslaught, the band is notorious for its on-stage theatrics, bolstered by the visually compelling motorized bone-puppetry of Finland's soon-to-be-legendary Isorattya Bone Machine (which you can experience through image and video at http://tinyurl.com/isorattya-bone-machine-01).

After their FMU session, they continue their extended tour of the boroughs by playing a Rocks Off Cruise with O'Death aboard the Half Moon, boarding at 7pm at Skyport Marina, at 23rd Street & the East River on Sept 10, a Celebrate Mexico Now festival show at Hecho en Dumbo, 111 Front St., Bklyn on Sept 11 and also the infamous Balkan thrash bar Mehanata, 113 Ludlow St. on Sept 13. Their first full-length debut cd is called Casa Donde and like Tidawt they've chosen to record their new CD in the US - Brooklyn in fact.

Profuse thanks to our illustrious engineer Bil Bowen who mixed both sets!

If you are in NYC and can make it to one of their gigs Sept 10 Rocks Off Cruise, Sept 11 at Hecho en Dumbo or Sept 13 at Mehanata, they may be able to give you a free one (as long as they have some left) if you say you heard them on FMU! They will also put a few copies for sale at the Cake Shop in the Lower East Side. Out of towners can try cdbaby.com.
