You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

Thank FMU for archives, and the North Coast for copious fog and 4-bar wifi, and y'all for the rest of this perfect end to an epic 2-lane twisty highway day.
Memories of Manhattan, circa '87-88: 4th floor walkup on Varick w/shower in the kitchen, toilet three doors down. Meeting Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, Ernie the ancient mariner*, and Anna, my best friend from kindergarten, at some neon-lit outdoor courtyard something on my way back from Divine's memorial service. Near-miss stabbings by unclothed mouth-befoamed persons of psychotic persuasions every time I left a friend's 35th St. flat.
*The 70 yr old merchant marine who came loping up beside me, at 3am as I left that bar, to show me the tattoo that twisted up and around his beefy left arm. And how it precisely twinned, stroke for stroke, the ink wrapped around my own. His was a totem bequeathed by a Haida fishing village that he'd called second home many many many many years before; mine was a crush's 3-day mushroom meditation.
That, right there, is what NYC means to me.
That and the extreme civility that is long post office lines on snowy January mornings almost every time I visit, being admonished by old ladies in re my lack of scarf-skillz, w/offers to tuck it in so I don't die of pneumonia.
