Garifuna music: Silvia Blanco and Aurelio Martinez

The Garifuna Collective, an all-star band assembled by groundbreaking Belizean singer Andy Palacio and Ivan Duran of Belize's Stonetree Records, and singers from the Garifuna women's recording project Umalali are touring the US through early May. Sadly the tour, which was to include Palacio, now instead will commemorate Andy's life: he passed away suddenly on January 19th. The tour also is in support of the wonderful new Umalali cd on Cumbancha Records.
Two talented and charismatic young tour participants, singer / guitarist Aurelio Martinez and singer Silvia Blanco stop by to play a few songs and chat. Jacob Edgar of Cumbancha also joins us.
The Garifuna people are a cultural minority on the Caribbean coast of Central America, descendents of slaves who today live in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Garifuna culture and music blends West African, Arawak Indian and European influences.
