Conspiracy of Beards (LIVE in studio)  First We Take Manhattan         CONSPIRACY OF BEARDS When the all male, a capella vocal group Conspiracy of Beards, who do exclusively covers of Leonard Cohen songs, formed five years ago they had no intention of doing more than one gig and becoming an actual group. But this unique San Francisco collective, who first got together in honor of a dying friend's wish originally intending to do just a one-off gig, have not just stayed together but grown in both membership and popularity. More importantly the Beards, who began as an octet but currently number 30 members - 25 of whom will be performing two dates this weekend in New York, have become more than just a group. They've become a supportive community of individuals brought together by the music of Leonard Cohen and their late friend's dream. "Peter Kadyk was a shining inspiration for a lot of us. He died at age 30 of HIV," said the Beards' musical director Daryl Henline. "And it had been a vision of Peter's that a bunch of men with long beards singing the songs of Leonard Cohen would form," added original member Andrew Kushin. "Personally I think in Peter's mind it was all mixed up with some scenes from (Russian film director) Tarkovsky's cutting room floor; something from a dark, frozen, 19th century Russian winter. Somber, grey, and hairy, harsh shadows and all that. The grave visual, eastern companion to Cohen's poems," he said with Henline recalling that, "After he died, Peter's wife Annah said to Pete's brother Pat and me 'Why don't you guys put that choir together.'" And hence the Conspiracy of Beards was born. And the fact that not all of its members had beards or, for that matter, had singing experience didn't stop them. With practice, under the guidance of the musically trained Henline, they honed their sound and broadened their styles of interpreting songs of Leonard Cohen's including "Chelsea Hotel" and "Tower of Song" in deliveries that range from barbershop, traditional mens choir type of arrangement, to classical music styles, to jazz and experimental. "Singing Leonard Cohen's music has changed us as people," said Henline. "Even though he might be ironic in some of his words and things. But what we're doing is not ironic at all. If we were just singing the songs of Foreigner or Van Halen or whoever it wouldn't be the same. But Leonard Cohen's music has a very special connection to men. At least to guys like us....guys from many walks of life; tradesmen, computer programmers, people who work in shops and stores, whatever," said the musical director who is a carpenter by trade. The singers meet every Sunday evening for practice, taking the summers off, and every second weekend in September they meet up and head out to the woods of California for a weekend of "feasting and drinking and just hanging out and learning new music around a bonfire" and welcoming new members to their open enrollment program. "It's kinda like a men's organization for guys who don't normally join men's organizations," laughed Henline. "It's an exercise in community. Music has brought us together but when we got together we found more than we were looking for. We found a sense of community." There are a TON of pirates in the NYC area, esp. in Brooklyn, and some of them interfere with WFMU. Most are Caribbean, Haitian, or Latino. I wish they'd back up off of FMU's frequency, or else! OR ELSE! Or else I'll... ummm... yell at them?

Fri. 3/21/08 5:06pm From: ADM

Ike, just steal their booty.

Fri. 3/21/08 5:06pm From: north guinea hills

the jinx lennon tracks are supadope!

Fri. 3/21/08 5:09pm From: Biz Markie

I am dope.

Fri. 3/21/08 5:09pm From: Ike

More pirate info: Apparently the 90.9 one that interferes with FMU is called Frito Destra. Or maybe that's the name of the guy who runs it? It is (or was) at 1431 Flatbush Ave.
http://blog.free103point9.org/labels/Brooklyn%20pirate%20radio.html

There are also recent reports of a 91.3 pirate. That's also bad for FMU's signal. Those BASTARDS! Go pick on a commercial station, jeez!

Fri. 3/21/08 5:10pm From: Tall Paul
